New Amsterdam Singers to Present SHAKESPEARE IN SONG, 5/22

The New Amsterdam Singers, led by music director Clara Longstreth, will present the final concert of its season, called Full Fathom Five: Shakespeare in Song (Composers of Many Lands in Love with the Bard) on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. at Saint Ignatius of Antioch Church, 552 West End Avenue at 87th Street. The program includes four major choral cycles on Shakespeare texts for a cappella choir by 20th- century composers from England, Switzerland, Finland, and Denmark. The evocative poem/song from The Tempest, 'Full Fathom Five,' appears in three of the cycles. (more...)

The artist community Yaddo announced today that the inaugural Yaddo Artist Medal will be presented to Pulitzer Prize winning author Philip Roth. Roth is set to receive the Yaddo Artist Medal, designed by internationally-acclaimed artist James Siena, at Yaddo's annual New York City Benefit on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Edison Ballroom (240 West 47th Street). University Press of Kentucky authors Justin S. Vaughn and Lilly J. Goren have been named the co-recipients of the 2014 Susan Koppelman Award for the Best Anthology, Multi-Authored, or Edited Book in Feminist Studies for their book Women and The White House: Gender, Popular Culture, and Presidential Politics. This award, presented by the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association, was established in 1985 to honor renowned feminist literary historian, Susan Koppelman, who edited the first anthology of feminist literary criticism. The PCA/ACA strives to stimulate an international interest in popular culture studies through the establishment and promotion of conferences, publications, and discussion. The award was presented on April 17 at the 2014 PCA/ACA annual convention held at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile in Chicago, Illinois. (more...)

Nintendo will be at the event with Wii Fit U and Wii Sports Club, two Wii U games that ask players to get up off their couches and get active. The two games align with this year's theme of the event, “Hop into Healthy, Swing into Shape,” which encourages children and families to live healthier and more active lifestyles. Visitors can play Wii Fit U and Wii Sports Club on the Ellipse before they head over to the nearby South Lawn of The White House.
