by BWW News Desk - Sep 28, 2016

The only American finalist for the 2016 International Opera Award for Best Opera Company, Opera Philadelphia scored a fresh triumph this past week, when it launched the season with the world premiere of Breaking The Waves, a new company co-commission inspired by Lars von Trier's searing Oscar-nominated 1996 film, from the creative team of Missy Mazzoli, Royce Vavrek, and James Darrah. With three performances still to come (Sep 27 & 29; Oct 1), the critical response has already been unanimously euphoric; as the Philadelphia Inquirer notes, the season's opening week has succeeded in 'effectively demonstrat[ing] Opera Philadelphia's growing presence and ambitions.' BWW Preview: Inside BREAKING THE WAVES, 'A Fever Dream of an Opera,' by Mazzoli and Vavrek, at the Guggenheim's Works & Process
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 20, 2016

Quick: What film won the Golden Globe for Best Movie in 1997? It was THE ENGLISH PATIENT. But more important for composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek, the question is “What film didn't win the Golden Globe in 1997?” The answer (for them, at least) is Lars von Trier's BREAKING The Waves, which they've transformed into an opera of the same name, premiering at Opera Philadelphia, September 22. BWW Review: Transatlantic Love Affair's Remount of the Ivey-Winning BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN is a Simple Story Beautifully Told
by Jill Schafer - Jun 8, 2016

Devised physical theater company Transatlantic Love Affair won an Ivey in 2012 for BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN, an original work based on the legend of the selkie, a seal who takes human form. I did not see that production, having only 'discovered' TLA shortly before their Ivey win through their Fringe show ASH LAND. I saw it at the final 'audience pick' show because it was the talk of the festival that year. Seeing TLA for the first time was one of the most moving theater experiences I've had, and I haven't missed a show since. I'm thrilled they're bringing back BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN as part of the Southern's ARTshare program. Seeing it last night, it's obvious why it won the Ivey. No one casts a spell like Transatlantic Love Affair, as they tell a story and create an entire world with nothing but their bodies, voices, and souls. BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN is an achingly beautiful and completely engrossing 75 minutes of storytelling. (more...)

McHargue's story starts at age 25, when he was a deacon in the largest denomination of the Conservative Evangelic movement: the Southern Baptist Convention. McHargue's life came to a startling halt when his dad called a family meeting to announce the end of his parents' marriage. And when McHargue turned to the Bible for help, he came up short (to say the least) on answers. (more...)
