Opera Philadelphia Triumphs With BREAKING THE WAVES
by BWW News Desk - Sep 28, 2016

The only American finalist for the 2016 International Opera Award for Best Opera Company, Opera Philadelphia scored a fresh triumph this past week, when it launched the season with the world premiere of Breaking The Waves, a new company co-commission inspired by Lars von Trier's searing Oscar-nominated 1996 film, from the creative team of Missy Mazzoli, Royce Vavrek, and James Darrah. With three performances still to come (Sep 27 & 29; Oct 1), the critical response has already been unanimously euphoric; as the Philadelphia Inquirer notes, the season's opening week has succeeded in 'effectively demonstrat[ing] Opera Philadelphia's growing presence and ambitions.' Big News and New Partnership Announced for EXIT Theatre and DIVAfest
by BWW News Desk - Oct 31, 2016

EXIT Theatre and DIVAfest are pleased to announce the merger of their organizations. DIVAfest, currently a Company in Residence at the EXIT, will integrate their operations and activities into those of EXIT Theatre and will present work under EXIT Theatre's banner.  DIVAfest was founded in 2002, a special project of EXIT Theatre, in response to a palpable lack of opportunities for female playwrights in the larger theatrical industry. Since then, DIVAfest has produced over 60 new plays and projects by women and provided opportunities in leadership, collaboration, and participation to hundreds of female artists. EXIT Theatre and DIVAfest look forward to two upcoming productions under this new partnership. Terra Incognita: Through The Waves - created in collaboration with UpLift Physical Theatre - opens November 4, 2016 at the EXIT Studio. Through a vocabulary of acrobatics, an all-female cast weaves the tale of a woman lost between the waters of her grief and the mountaintops of her joyful memories, following the disappearance of her soul-mate. Kilgallen/Jones - a new play by Allison Page, who also scribed Hilarity which DIVAfest produced in 2015 - opens March 9, 2017 on EXIT Theatre's mainstage. Inspired by real-life journalist Dorothy Kilgallen, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after announcing privileged knowledge pertaining to JFK's assassination, Kilgallen/Jones explores the human imperative to investigate and the real (and sometimes imagined) consequences that follow. Additionally, signature monthly offering DIVA or Die Burlesque will continue to delight patrons in the EXIT Cafe on the third Saturday of every month.      Christina Augello, Founder and Artistic Director of EXIT Theatre and DIVAfest, says that she and the rest of her team are enthusiastic about "continuing to support the work of women in the arts and upholding the mission of celebrating female power and creativity and nurturing female artists and allies."  (more...)

BWW Review: THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING at Arena
by Roger Catlin - Oct 17, 2016

One of the failings of human beings is the hesitance to visit those who have lost loved ones. We wonder about the right thing to say when the actual requirement is to be present and to listen. That's all that's asked of audience members for 'The Year of Magical Thinking,' Joan Didion's adaptation of her own award-winning memoir into a one-woman play, now at Arena Stage. (more...)

BWW Review: Tori Scott Provides Post-Election Catharsis in SEEING DOUBLE at Joe's Pub
by Troy Frisby - Nov 30, 2016

Early on in Tori Scott's SEEING DOUBLE, the woman of the hour deadpanned, 'I've been in a rut since birth.' If that's the case, we should all be so lucky. But on the subject of things that could be going better, throughout Scott's performance at Joe's Pub on November 13, the unofficial theme of the night was, 'Could this year get any worse?' With the election still looming large, Scott took the stage, explaining she'd been looking forward to the show because she was in need of some attention, before adding, 'Then Tuesday happened and I needed group therapy.' THE FLOOZIES Hit the Fox Theatre
by BWW News Desk - Nov 29, 2016

Just outside the jazz mecca of Kansas City springs liberal oasis Lawrence, Kansas-separated only by The Waves of wheat from the epicenter of the electronic music revolution in Colorado. From Lawrence, it would logically follow that an act could rise to prominence fueled by the swing of Basie, the birth of Charlie Parker's bebop, and the wild frontier of electronica. Born in funk and bred in the digital age, live electronic duo The Floozies have burst onto the scene at a time when the industry needed them the most. (more...)

BWW Review: DISNEY'S THE LITTLE MERMAID - Awash With Problems
by Lynn Beaver - Nov 28, 2016

There are problems inherent in producing a modern Broadway play. A musical based on an animated movie raises the difficulty level unbelievably high. The Georgetown Palace's current production of DISNEY'S THE LITTLE MERMAID is a prime example of just how high the bar is set in trying to reproduce what looks seamless in New York. Unfortunately the result is a somewhat bumpy voyage under the sea. (more...)

BWW Review: THE FLYING DUTCHMAN Vanishes Too Quickly from Austin, TX
by Amy Bradley - Nov 17, 2016

Presented during The Austin's Opera's 30th anniversary season, THE FLYING DUTCHMAN commands the historic Long Center's stage with a diverse, collective cast and belting operatic sequences. The origins of the story of The Flying Dutchman are rather skewed between timelines. The story first appeared in Travels in various parts Europe, Asia, and Africa in 1790 by John MacDonald, and again when Richard Wagner's operatic rendition came to life in 1843, after being adapted from an episode of Heinrich Heine's satirical novel The Memoirs of Mister von Schnabelewopski. More modernly, the story of The Flying Dutchman is told through the highly loved film series, The Pirates of The Carribean. Regardless of the interpretations by creative minds, one fact remains true - The Flying Dutchman refers to a ghostly ship destined to sail the seas for all eternity. Richard Wagner's rendition, sure to please both critics and audiences alike, is bringing this haunted tale to life with the reputation of precision that precedes The Austin Opera. (more...)

Houston Grand Opera expands its commitment to broadening the audience for opera with a 2017-18 season that includes the first presentations of Leonard Bernstein's classic musical West Side Story by a major American opera house and the world premiere of composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Royce Vavrek's holiday opera The House without a Christmas Tree. BWW Review: Pointer/Counterpoint – City Opera's CANDIDE vs. Prototype's BREAKING THE WAVES
by Richard Sasanow - Jan 10, 2017

When I saw that New York City Opera was doing Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE at the same time as New York's Prototype Festival--with Missy Mazzoli's BREAKING The Waves opening the festival of opera-theatre and music-theatre on the same night—I thought that it was great counter-programming. After all, what could be further from Mazzoli's brilliant but grim gem than Bernstein's comic masterpiece--proving there's more than one way to skin a music theatre piece? (more...)

BWW Preview: Mazzoli-Vavrek WAVES Gets Second Break, at New York's Prototype Festival in January
by Richard Sasanow - Dec 27, 2016

For a new opera to have its second major showing less than four months after its premiere is unheard of—but then BREAKING The Waves, based on the Lars Von Trier film of the same name, isn't just any opera. This triumph by composer Missy Mazzoli, librettist Royce Vavrek, and direction by James Darrah—with a star-making turn by soprano Kiera Duffy in the central role of Bess—debuted at Opera Philadelphia last September and is having its New York premiere on January 6-9, 2017, over the first weekend of the Prototype Festival at NYU's Skirball Center.
