Oratorio Society of New York 140th Season to Feature 'The Blizzard Voices' 11/5

To launch the 140th anniversary season of the Oratorio Society of New York, the city's second-oldest cultural organization still performing, OSNY Music Director Kent Tritle has created an all-American program about "American aesthetics, history, and experience": music by Charles Ives and Aaron Copland and the New York premiere of a 2008 oratorio about an 1888 American tragedy. "American Voices" takes place on Monday, November 5, 2012, at Carnegie Hall, and features arrangements for chorus and orchestra of selections from Copland's Old American Songs and three songs by Charles Ives; Copland's "The Promise of Living" from The Tender Land; and the New York premiere of Paul Moravec's The Blizzard Voices, a work based on poetry by former U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser about the Great Plains blizzard of 1888. James Levine to Conduct Series of Opera Scenes at Juilliard, 2/11-2/16

The Metropolitan Opera and The Juilliard School present an evening of opera featuring Act I of Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail; Stravinsky's rarely-performed one-act comedy Mavra; Act I, scene 1 of Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini; and Act I, part 2 of Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore in the fourth collaboration between the two institutions on Tuesday, February 11 and Friday, February 14, 2014 at 8 PM and Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 2 PM in Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Met Music Director James Levine conducts the Juilliard Orchestra and singers from the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, as well as singers from the Ellen and James S. In a return engagement with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO), The Collegiate Chorale will perform 11 concerts in Tel Aviv and Haifa with the IPO under the baton of renowned conductors Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti. They will then travel with the IPO to Austria to make their Salzburg Festival debut, the first performance there by an American choir since the Chicago Symphony Chorus appeared in 1989. (more...)

NY Philharmonic Announces Radio Broadcast Details

In May 2011, The New York Philharmonic This Week - the two-hour, national weekly and international radio program of concerts by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by actor Alec Baldwin - begins with commercial New York Philharmonic recordings of past performances. They include Bloch's Concerto Grosso No. 1 (conducted by Charles Munch, with pianist Walter Hendl as soloist, recorded 1948); Ben-Haim's Sweet Psalmist of Israel (conducted by Leonard Bernstein, with Sylvia Marlowe, harpsichord, and Christina Stavrache, harp, recorded 1959); and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 13, BabiYar (conducted by Kurt Masur, with baritone Sergei Leiferkus and the Men of the New York Choral Artists, Joseph Flummerfelt, director, recorded 1993). The following week pianist Emanuel Ax - who is celebrating his 100th performance with the Philharmonic - will play Debussy's Estampes for solo piano, followed by Messiaen's Couleurs de la cité céleste, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, who will also lead the Orchestra in Mahler's Symphony No. 5. OSSCS Names Clinton Smith New Music Director

Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers (OSSCS) launch their 44th season with a dynamic new music director, Clinton Smith. After the tragic death of founder and visionary George Shangrow in 2010, OSSCS mounted an exhaustive search for a new music director that culminated in the 2012-2013 season, where six music director finalists each conducted one concert. Clinton Smith conducted the March 16, 2013 concert featuring pieces by Haydn, Gluck, Bizet and Copland. Audience and community feedback was a critical component in the decision-making process. As Board President Pro Tem Paula Rimmer summarized, "Clinton's rapport with our singers and instrumentalists was instantaneous. He has a deep understanding of OSSCS' history, exciting ideas for the future, and a truly exuberant love of music. We are thrilled to welcome him into our community." (more...)

Central City Opera to Present THE SOUND OF MUSIC, 8/2-10

Audiences of all ages can hum along to their favorite songs like 'Edelweiss,' 'My Favorite Things' 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' and title song 'The Sound of Music' when Central City Opera (CCO) brings to Denver one of the most popular Broadway productions of all time, The Sound of Music. Rodgers and Hammerstein II's Tony Award winning musical, which was also an Academy Award winning movie, is Central City Opera's final production for the 2014 Festival. The Sound of Music will be performed at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex for seven performances only from August 2 through August 10. Directed by Ken Cazan, who also directed CCO's critically acclaimed production of Dead Man Walking this summer, The Sound of Music will be performed in English with a full live orchestra. The Oratorio Society of New York was slated to perform its program, "American Voices" featuring the New York premiere of Paul Moravec's oratorio The Blizzard Voices at Carnegie Hall on November 5, 2012, as the first program of its 140th anniversary season. But Hurricane Sandy blew into the city the week before, and the concert was one of several that had to be postponed. The OSNY milestone season opened instead with its annual performance of Handel's Messiah at Christmastime. (more...)

This powerful and unsettling work chronicles the 1985 hijacking of the Mediterranean cruise ship Achille Lauro by Palestinian terrorists and the murder of disabled Jewish-American passenger, Leon Klinghoffer.
