A staged reading of The Admirable Crichton by J.M. Barrie will serve as a delightful three-day theatrical complement, directed by Jon Kretzu. American Ballet Theatre's Shakespeare Celebration on July 2nd delved into magical mishaps while bidding adieu to dancer Yuriko Kajiya. The evening began in a lush wonderland of Frederick Ashton's The Dream and ended with the choppy waters of Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky's The Tempest. OSF Awarded $25,000 Shakespeare in American Communities Grant

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is one of 40 nonprofit theatre companies chosen to participate in the 2014-15 Shakespeare in American Communities program. OSF will receive a $25,000 grant award from Arts Midwest, on behalf of the National Endowment for the Arts, in support of efforts to expose underserved students and teachers to the works of William Shakespeare. Touchstone and Allentown Public Theatre Announce Actor Training Program

Touchstone Theatre founder Bill George and Allentown Public Theatre artistic director Joshua Neth announce that they will be co-teaching a year-long program of actor training starting this fall. Entitled the Valley Actor's Lab (VAL), the program seeks to provide excellent and systematic training to seriously inclined actors in the Lehigh Valley. George and Neth describe themselves as “two theatre artists who hold their love of actors and the work of the actor above all earthly things”; coming from different backgrounds and different theatre educations, they have joined teaching skills in this unique effort to advance the life of the actor in the Lehigh Valley. Their intention in creating VAL is to strengthen the work of the Valley theatre community by deepening the base of well-trained artists in the region and facilitating collaboration between producers and performers. EURYANTHE Opens at Bard SummerScape this Week

To enrich its immersion in "Schubert and His World," Bard SummerScape 2014 presents Euryanthe (1823) by Carl Maria von Weber, marking the opera's first American revival in 100 years. Headlined by Ellie Dehn, "a charismatic soprano with great stage presence" (Wall Street Journal), Bard's original staging is by Kevin Newbury, creator of SummerScape's "gold standard production" (WQXR) of Richard Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae. Euryanthe's five performances (July 25, 27 & 30; August 1 & 3) feature the festival's resident American Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of music director Leon Botstein, who also leads semi-staged performances of Schubert's own seldom-heard opera Fierrabras, starring Joseph Kaiser, on August 17, and of a double-bill of rarities - Schubert's one-act Singspiel Die Verschworenen and the first American presentation of Franz von Suppe's operetta Franz Schubert - on August 10. Sound Theatre Company completes its eighth season with the Seattle professional premiere of Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock, in partnership with GianT Projects. Blood Relations is a tense thriller based on the historical facts and speculation surrounding Lizzie Borden, who was charged with the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother. Ten years after her acquittal, Lizzie is pressed by her lover to reveal what happened. Lizzie has her re-enact the events in her place, facing the same choices with startling results. (more...)

Shakespeare & Company's Dennis Krausnick, a founder and also Director of Training, steps into the title role of Julius Caesar for a brief run beginning July 15 through August 2. Nigel Gore, who has been playing Caesar since it opened several weeks ago, takes a short-term leave from the show after this weekend's performance on Sunday July 13-Gore will be back in the role Saturday, August 9. Sound Theatre Company will launch into raunch and ruffles this summer with the Seattle premiere of The School for Lies by David Ives, co-directed by Teresa Thuman and Ken Michels. This saucy update of Moliere's The Misanthrope by Tony Award-nominated David Ives (Venus in Fur) stuffs contemporary off-color slang into the classic baroque farce, in which rivals scheme romance to expose a notorious cynic. A few cunning lies set party girl Celimene and acerbic wit Frank up for battle and sex. Misbehavior, gossip, glamour and scandal reign in this clowning burlesque written in rhymed couplets. THE AUDIENCE, Starring Helen Mirren, to Bring the Crown to Broadway Next Spring

The Daily Mail writes that THE AUDIENCE, starring Helen Mirren, is on its way to Broadway. The production, helmed by Stephen Daldry and written by Peter Morgan, will begin previews in February 2015 for a March opening.
