From the bustle of neon-lit Shinjuku and its ultramodern skyscrapers to the traditional scenery of Mt. Fuji, cherry blossoms, and Shinto shrines, Tokyo has served as a source of creative inspiration for generations of international filmmakers. Anticipating the 2020 Summer Games, when the eyes of the world will once again fall upon Japan's dynamic capital, Tokyo Stories: Japan in the Global Imagination considers the ways Japan—and the elusive concept of “Japaneseness” —is rendered and interpreted outside its borders with a revealing selection of Tokyo-set films by foreign directors, including Japanese co-productions, Hollywood blockbusters, and European arthouse favorites.

Particularly in light of the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro, author and civil rights activist James Baldwin is garnering new attention and appreciation for his astute analyses of race, class, and sexuality in U.S. culture. Our reading group will take up his groundbreaking semi-autobiographical first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953). Attendees are invited to read this seminal text that brought mid-20th Century African-American literature out of the shadow of Richard Wright while deftly exploring the post-Civil War Great Migration, its southern roots, its religious inflections, and its generational tensions. The suggested edition is the most recent paperback (ISBN 978-0345806543). Traditional New Orleans fare of coffee and beignets at Muriel's Jackson Square with lively discussion to follow led by Festival favorite and Southern literary scholar Gary Richards. Seating is limited to 50 persons; pre-registration is required.

Daniel, the sixth production of its 26th season performing February 25 to April 8 (Press Opening March 3). Live Ink Theatre is pleased to announce a lively staged reading of "Lillian, Paula. Carson" a play by John Barrow on Wednesday, June 28th, 8 pm, at Amelia Community Theatre's Studio 209. Directed by Ron Kurtz and performed by Fran Hindsley, Sadie LaManna and Sinda Nichols, the play had its' world preview in March at The Morningside Players in NYC. Set in 1953 in Northern Georgia, this inspiring and enlightening drama gives us a unique view inside the hearts and mind of three brilliant women: Lillian Smith, best selling novelist of "Strange Fruit", and a strong opponent of segregation in the South; Paula Snelling, Lillian's long-term companion and co-editor with Lillian of the magazine 'South Today', and CarsonMcCullers, novelist and playwright (The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, The Member of the Wedding).

A classic drama by America's only Nobel Prize-winning playwright continues the 2015-2016 ESL Wilson Stage Series as Geva Theatre Center presents A MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN by Eugene O'Neill and directed by Ben Barnes in the Elaine P. Wilson Stage now through April 24, 2016. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!

BroadwayWorld has just learned that Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE will return to Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street) this spring. Bill Camp (as Reverend John Hale), Jim Norton (as Giles Corey), Tavi Gevinson (as Mary Warren), and Jason Butler Harner (as Reverend Samuel Parris) are among those who will join previously announced stars Ben Whishaw (as John Proctor), Sophie Okonedo (as Elizabeth Proctor), Saoirse Ronan (as Abigail Williams), and Ciaran Hinds (as Deputy-Governor Danforth).

Every once in awhile I am blown away by an innovative and excitingly creative theatrical production which surprises me both physically and emotionally. Such was the case when I experienced Eugene O'Neill's ANNA CHRISTIE at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. The incredible cast stars Zoe Perry alongside her real-life father, Scandal's Jeff Perry, and Grey's Anatomy's Kevin McKidd as the play's trio of iconic characters who create an explosive mix, each struggling for salvation.

In his timeless and invigorating script The Trip to Bountiful Horton Foote engages our attention with his keen appraisal that 'The world can't be bought'. Believing the best things in life are free - well, almost..., elderly Carrie Watts (Cicely Tyson), in her Tony-winning role, proves just how healing a return to one's roots, however brief, may be. This Broadway revival directed by Michael Wilson also stars Vanessa Williams from the original New York production and Blair Underwood replacing Cuba Gooding Jr. It's a stellar cast, achieving a truly beautiful representation of Foote's infreqeuntly seen work.

For some months, I had been hearing strong, positive comments about a previous stage reading of actor/singer Justin Asher's original HAINT, and finally, tonight, after mounting publicity (including a spot on WKNO's Checking on the Arts and an article in The Commercial Appeal's GO MEMPHIS), I was able to attend the first, complete performance of the play, staged by New Moon Theatre at Theatre Works. Not since Jerre Dye's original CICADAS have I left a theatre in such a state of excitement; like Mr. Dye's play, which recently had a highly successful production in Chicago, this is a play born of a region and time - in this case, the isolated Ozarks of Arkansas in 1953.

Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) has announced its 2014/15 season: George Orwell's Animal Farm, adapted for the stage by Althos Low, directed by SYA Artistic and Educational Director Hallie Gordon; and the world premiere of This Is Modern Art by Kevin Coval and Idris Goodwin, directed by Lisa Portes.

After NBC's foray into musical theatre with last week's live broadcast of The Sound of Music starring Carrie Underwood, and with Laura Osnes' Cinderella sashaying on the Great White Way, the continued sway of Broadway composer-lyricist duo Rodgers & Hammerstein is unmistakable. The Museum will present 39 features. All of the films will be shown in 35mm-many in stunning restorations-except for Red Line 7000, which will be shown in 16mm.

DANCING ON NAILS, a new play by Paul Manuel Kane, will end its Off-Broadway run tonight, July 31st at Theatre 80. Under the direction of Allen Lewis Rickman, the cast of DANCING ON NAILS features Peter Van Wagner (Isaac Ginsburg on HBO's “Boardwalk Empire”), Lori Wilner (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK), Bryna Weiss (“House,” “Gilmore Girls,”THE ENCORE OF TONY DURAN), Michael Lewis (THE YOUNG MAN FROM ATLANTA, 'Blue Bloods'), and Jazmyn Richardson(“Party at Micah's”).
