LA Chamber Orchestra Presents LIFT EVERY VOICE, 1/14

Celebrating the unique ability of music and the arts to address challenging social and moral issues, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) presents LIFT EVERY VOICE, a three-week, city-wide series of free and ticketed concerts, conversations and community engagement curated by LACO Music Director Jeffrey Kahane from January 14 to 29, 2017, at venues across the Southland.  LIFT EVERY VOICE, conceived and curated by Kahane to explore themes of tolerance, compassion, cooperation and creativity along with the power of music to encourage understanding and promote peace, was inspired by the lives of human and civil rights champions Rabbi Joachim Prinz, composer Kurt Weill and Martin Luther King, Jr.  The series is a signature part of Kahane's 20th and final LACO season, which features programming that reflects his far-reaching impact, broad musical sensibilities, distinctive philosophical interests and tremendous artistic passion.  Among LIFT EVERY VOICE's highlights are the first Los Angeles performance since the 1950s of Weill's profound anti- apartheid musical Lost in the Stars, directed by Anne Bogart, and Weill/Brecht's satirical The Seven Deadly Sins with chanteuse Storm Large, both provocative works addressing weighty moral issues; violinist Daniel Hope featured on the U.S. premiere of Weill's Song-Suite For Violin and Orchestra arranged by Paul Bateman; the West Coast premiere of Bruce Adolphe's Violin Concerto “I Will Not Remain Silent”; a joint performance with the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA); and symposiums a chamber music program and film screenings.  (more...)

Acorn Productions' Naked Shakespeare to Present SEVEN DEADLY SINS

Naked Shakespeare, Acorn Productions' performance series dedicated to presenting the works of the Bard in accessible ways for contemporary audiences, continues their popular series of First Friday performances next month with two performances of 'Seven Deadly Sins,' a series of seven highly-abridged stories from seven different plays, each of which highlights a different vice. Naked Shakespeare Artistic Director abridged the scripts and directs the show, which features a cast of twelve actors, with several company members joined by a few guest artists. Unlike previous First Friday shows, 'Seven Deadly Sins' will be a series of self-contained short pieces, allowing audience members to experience both extremely well-known selections from Othello and The Tempest as well as lesser known plays including Timon of Athens and Coriolanus. Naked Shakespeare's First Friday shows begin a month of Shakespeare performances by various companies designed to coincidence with the visit of a copy of the First Folio at the Portland Public Library. BWW Review: Teatro Vivo's NUESTRA PASTORELA is a Heartwarming Holiday Comedy For All Ages

NUESTRA PASTORELA is written by David Lozano and Jeffry Farrell and is presented in Austin by Teatro Vivo. This is an adaptation of a Mexican Pastorela; a traditional retelling of the Nativity told from the shepherds' perspective. Traditionally, the shepherds must defy the temptations of The Seven Deadly Sins set posed by the devil follow the star to Bethlehem. This story sets the tone for the holiday season with the important message that good will always triumph over evil. In this comedic variation, the traditional Pastorela receives a humorous makeover and the three shepherds at the center of the story are portrayed as clowns. (more...)

We continue our series on technical theatre artists in Austin with a look at the Art of Costuming. The dictionary defines costuming as "the act of furnishing or designing costumes" but that definition doesn't really tell someone exactly what all goes into that act. A costumer is the person who, for any particular production makes, sells, or rents the costumes that you see for every stage production you attend, whether it is modern dress or elaborate period outfits. It is their work that tells the audience exactly what time period a play is set in more than any other technical theatre element.
