by Michael Dale - Mar 24, 2013

Review - Cirque du Soleil's Totem & The Broadway Musicals of 1961
by Michael Dale - Mar 22, 2013

A human ball of silver glitter hanging from a cord is lowered above what looks like a bungalow-sized muffin top.  (It's supposed to represent a turtle shell.)  Before the glitter ball makes its landing the cover is removed to reveal what looks like a tribe of humanish amphibians bouncing on trampolines and twirling on the muffin/turtle's frame.  Shortly after, a sleazy-looking clown in a tropical shirt tosses a condom to a woman in the front row and says, 'Call me!'  Yes, dear readers, Cirque du Soleil is back in town. BWW Reviews: THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT Calls Out at Oyster Mill
by Marakay Rogers - Jun 3, 2013

Some shows are iconic, known by everyone - that would be LES MISERABLES. Others are iconic and not known, best identified by individual songs that everyone knows by heart, while many people know the songs and have no clue that they are show tunes. That would be THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE SMELL OF THE CROWD. Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley wanted to recreate their success in STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF, and the result was the show that gave us 'Who Can I Turn To?' Opening in England in 1964, the show was slight enough not to open in the West End, but David Merrick decided to give it a chance on Broadway. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Jim Brochu's CHARACTER MAN is a Triumphant, Tour de Force Tribute To Iconic Musical Theater Stars
by Stephen Hanks - Jul 12, 2013

About halfway through Jim Brochu's Saturday, June 29 performance at the Metropolitan Room of his new show Character Man, I realized I was witnessing what was probably the best cabaret show I'd seen this year, and perhaps was one of the best in my almost three years of reviewing cabaret. By the time the show ended, I had changed my mind. Not because the show fell apart in the second half, but because what Jim Brochu had created (and is opening tonight at the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs, Florida, where it will be performed until August 11) was more than a cabaret show. Character Man is a delightful, extremely well-crafted Off-Broadway theater piece that is destined for a run that might rival his critically-acclaimed one-man Zero Mostel tribute show, Zero Hour, which played throughout the country between 2006-2012 and earned Brochu 2010 Drama Desk and Helen Hayes Awards. Bob O'Hare Announces 'One Last Show' for Don't Tell Mama
by BWW News Desk - Feb 2, 2014

Therefore, Bob O'Hare's Recovery at Don't Tell Mama on the evening of November 17th may well be one of the greatest surprises beheld in many a moon....It's not simply the fact that O'Hare's truly-lovely voice emerges as never over-coached and with a really terrific natural sound. It's not simply that he's made truly impeccable choices in terms of material, both for not being terribly precocious but also very carefully selected. It is, in point of fact, that this really is what an act is supposed to represent both as what cabaret was in its heyday and what the art form is supposed to be from this point on....The evening's first true high-point rears its head with 'One Step' by Malby and Shire, featuring a spectacular patter sequence, followed shortly thereafter by 'Journey to the Past' by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Award-winning director Eric Michael Gillett once again proves himself as a master of the genre here...O'Hare emerges as triumphant at every turn. The guy has very simply been through hell and back, and it never shows. He couldn't be more quick with a smile or generosity of spirit, and it's truly one of the feel-good evenings of this or any other of the several last cabaret seasons. Should Bob O'Hare and Recovery return, please visit the process. It couldn't possibly be more worth visiting.' - Andrew Martin, NiteLifeExchange (more...)
