Guest Blog: Cyril Husbands On The Rise of Black Theatre
by Guest Blog: Cyril Husbands - Nov 17, 2016

It didn't quite make Word of the Year, but the expression 'throwing shade' has found its way into the latest edition of the Collins Dictionary. The significance of this development is somewhat shaded (see what I did there?) by the general bemusement that it took Collins so long to 'discover' the phrase, and that anyone pays attention to dictionaries anymore, except in their online guises as useful tools for students and other plagiarists. BWW Review: Attending A MARVELOUS PARTY at Winter Park Playhouse
by Kimberly Moy - Nov 14, 2016

The Winter Park Playhouse brings to life the musings and music of English playwright, composer, master-of-all-things theater Noel Coward. As a playwright, many of Coward's works still make their way into modern theater repertoire including BLITHE SPIRIT, PRIVATE LIVES and many more. A MARVELOUS PARTY is a light show that strings together songs and anecdotes written by Coward. Though slightly high-brow, I like to think of his work as observational satire and a peek into the life of a successful theater genius. (more...)

BWW Review: In the Calm Before the Storm, Randy Rainbow Throws an ELECTION EVE PARTY at Birdland
by Troy Frisby - Nov 13, 2016

There's no easy way to talk about a performance ostensibly thrown in honor of a presidential candidate who didn't end up winning. Let's be clear: Randy Rainbow's ELECTION EVE PARTY held on Monday, night at Birdland wasn't exactly a non-partisan event. The performers dropped more 'I'm With Her' references than at an actual Clinton rally, and The Party likely could've sustained itself on Rainbow's viral parodies alone. (more...)

BWW Review: Lance Horne Unveils New Work (With a Little Help From His Friends) in First Show of His Residency at Joe's Pub
by Troy Frisby - Dec 3, 2016

Sitting in my seat watching Lance Horne and his many friends perform at NEW WORK NEW WORK I: EXTRAORDINARY DAYS at Joe's Pub, I couldn't help but feel like I was at a really great dinner party (if I were invited to dinner parties with some of the most talented artists in the city). The seats---and, in this case, the songs---were assigned, but the host didn't try and force conversation, and the whole affair was better for it. The purpose of the November 21 show, the first in a year-long residency, was for the successful composer and musical director to showcase his recent work, and, for new material, Horne's songs were quite polished.
