Stephen Costello looks forward to a number of important firsts in 2014-15. Besides creating the role of Michele in San Francisco Opera's world premiere production of Two Women, the Tucker Award-winning tenor returns to the Metropolitan Opera for a pair of house role debuts, reprising his star turn as Alfredo -- also seen this season at the Vienna State Opera -- in La traviata, and singing Camille in Susan Stroman's new staging of The Merry Widow. He makes his professional role debut as Ferrando in Così fan tutte at Houston Grand Opera, and house debuts at both Austin Lyric Opera, in the title role of a new Roméo et Juliette, and London's Wigmore Hall, where he launches the season with a solo recital in the prestigious Rosenblatt Series. Costello also joins his wife, soprano Ailyn Pérez, for romantic duets from their recent hit album, Love Duets, with the BBC Symphony at London's Barbican Hall, and on a U.S. duo recital tour to the opera houses of Washington, Dallas, San Diego, and Philadelphia. SSU's Department of Theatre Arts & Dance has planned a wild, rebel-filled and wickedly funny season that begins in the Deep South and travels to India, Russia and around the globe through drama, comedy, opera and dance. For its annual performance season, the Department of Theatre Arts & Dance offers special events, several free K-12 Student Matinees, SSU "Faculty & Staff Night" and alumni performances. The 2014-15 season sees one of Deborah Voigt's most personal projects come to fruition, with the HarperCollins publication of her candid, funny, and soul-baring memoir Call Me Debbie: True Confessions of a Down-to-Earth Diva. She also returns to the opera house, reprising her star turn in Francesca Zambello's Salome for her Dallas Opera debut; making her title role debut in a new staging of The Merry Widow at Michigan Opera Theater; and undertaking the roles of Elisabeth and Venus in Tannhäuser at the Hamburg State Opera – her first time singing both roles in the same production. To launch her new appointment as WQXR's inaugural Susan W. Rose Artist-in-Residence, Voigt co-hosts the opening-night broadcast of Carnegie Hall Live, joining WQXR host Jeff Spurgeon to present the Berlin Philharmonic, Sir Simon Rattle and Anne-Sophie Mutter live in concert from the New York venue. She herself headlines the season-opening concert of the Las Vegas Philharmonic and season-closing events at both the Pacific Symphony and the USM Symphony, which she joins for “An Evening with Deborah Voigt.” Meanwhile, as returning Artist-in-Residence at the Washington National Opera, the beloved soprano continues mentoring young singers in the company's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program throughout the season. Susan Graham scored a fresh triumph this summer at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, where, as Anna in a new production of The King and I, she made her first foray into musical theater since her student days. Now the Grammy Award-wining mezzo returns to the concert hall, launching the 2014-15 season under Edo de Waart in her Malaysian Philharmonic debut, and joining a trio of top orchestras -- the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and John Eliot Gardiner's Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique -- for her signature Berlioz. Long recognized as one of the world's foremost exponents of French music, Graham returns with Berlioz to the San Francisco Opera, revisiting her star turn as Didon in an original staging of Les Troyens, while for her return to the Metropolitan Opera she sings the title role in Susan Stroman's new take on The Merry Widow. Rodgers and Hammerstein II's Tony Award winning musical, which was also an Academy Award winning movie, is Central City Opera's final production for the 2014 Festival. The Sound of Music will be performed at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex for seven performances only from August 2 through August 10. Directed by Ken Cazan, who also directed CCO's critically acclaimed production of Dead Man Walking this summer, The Sound of Music will be performed in English with a full live orchestra. From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire. (more...)

Tickets for Dylan F. Thomas' new production of Verdi's immortal La Traviata are already going fast! One of the most beloved operas of all time, La Traviata was also the inspiration for the hit film 'Pretty Woman' starring Julia Robers ('Violetta') and Richard Gere ('Alfredo'). But while Hollywood insists on a 'happily-ever-after' ending, opera (and real life) often takes a different direction. La Traviata's moving story and music will be brought to life on The Madrid Theatre stage by an outstanding cast, led by Shira Renee Thomas and Dylan F. Thomas at the Sunday 3 pm matinees (9/21,28), and byRachelle Woolston and Matthew Miles at the 7:30 pm Saturday evening performance (9/27). Brian Onderdonk leads The Center Stage Opera Orchestra through the lush score, and the English translation of the Italian libretto will be projected above the stage. (more...)
