TAMPA BAY, Fla., Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ While eCommerce is quickly becoming one of the country's fastest-growing segmentsForrester Research valued the market at $263 billion in 2013 (1)the industry has yet to effectively combat one of its largest threats: friendly fraud chargebacks, a trend whereby consumers dispute a credit card charge with their bank to either receive an item for free or, in a less common scenario, because they did not realize another member of their household had made the purchase. And even some of the world's biggest companies are falling victim to friendly fraud: Google recently settled with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to the tune of $19million over in-app transactions allegedly committed by account holders' children without their knowledge or consent. (2) According to dispute mitigation and risk management company Chargebacks911, Google's situation is not uncommonfriendly fraud chargebacks are costing merchants nearly $12billion (3) annually, and merchants are regularly found to be at fault due to lax regulations put in place by credit card companies, in addition to the lack of protection against unwarranted credit card disputes for eCommerce merchants.
