BWW Review: THE KING OF THE YEES Playwright Lauren Yee Shares Her Father's Story in an Innovative World Premiere Staging
by Shari Barrett - Jul 18, 2017

In her new latest play KING OF THE YEES, now enjoying its World Premiere at Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, Yee shares the tale of how her father Larry has been a driving force in the Yee Fung Toy (Yee Family Association), a seemingly obsolescent Chinese American men's club formed 150 years ago in the wake of the Gold Rush when workers from China were brought to San Francisco to assist in the building of the much-needed railroads crossing America. And while the story may be totally fictionalized, it seemed very real to me, especially since Yee wrote herself as well as her father into the play, having them introduced in an innovative, comical, and interactive way during the preamble to the production. For those of you lucky enough to be seated in the front row, be prepared to interact with the overly friendly and well-intentioned Larry Yee, portrayed with energy and glee by Francis Jue. (more...)

BWW Review: LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST at Greater Hartford Shakespeare Festival
by Joseph Harrison - Jul 16, 2017

"They have measured many a mile to tread a measure with you on this grass." A very appropriate quote from William Shakespeare's comedy LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, which is playing through July 30th on the grounds of St. Joseph's University in West Hartford - a performance of the Greater Hartford Shakespeare Festival. Appropriate because audiences gather together (on the grass and underneath the beautiful summer sky) on blankets, lawn chairs, and camp chairs to view the outdoor production of the bard's timeless comedy. This experience is not only exciting in terms of the strong production, but also for the unique venue and opportunity to dine/drink al fresco while enjoying a night of theatre. (more...)

BWW Review: The MUNY's Engaging and Lively ALL SHOOK UP
by Chris Gibson - Jul 14, 2017

ALL SHOOK UP, a celebration of music performed by The King, Elvis Presley, is a entertaining mash-up of Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT, combined with some ideas from FOOTLOOSE, and with just a pinch of the movie version of GREASE (book by Joe DiPietro). I know how that sounds, but instead of taking itself or the music too seriously, this show actually achieves a sort of subversive and hilarious kitsch appeal. It's the current production on the MUNY's stage, and it's a splashy, funny, silly, and tune-filled hoot from start to finish. (more...)
