BWW Review: Strawdog's ONCE IN A LIFETIME Offers Up Comedic Nostalgia
by Rachel Weinberg - May 6, 2016

For Strawdog Theatre Company's final production in its Broadway home, the company fittingly presents George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's 1930 comedy ONCE IN A LIFETIME-both play and production are rife with charm and sly winks to the audience. Director Damon Kiely's choice to stage this particular Kaufman and Hart comedy is also an intriguing one. ONCE IN A LIFETIME chiefly concerns itself with the changes to the entertainment industry after the appearance of the first 'talkie' (a film with spoken dialogue) and a frantic trio of three former vaudeville performers-May, George, and Jerry-who scramble to Hollywood hoping to strike it rich. And just as Jerry contemplates what these new 'talkies' will mean for the future of the 'legitimate stage,' so too do we now find ourselves on the precipice of immense change for the film and entertainment industry. Happy Birthday Al Jolson! Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with the 1946 Oscar-winning biographical film, The Jolson Story. His Broadway credits include: Hold on to Your Hats, The Wonder Bar, Big Boy, Artists and Models, Bombo, and many more. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Musical Theatre West Revisits the Glorious Feeling of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 24, 2015

As the cliche goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That is perhaps partly the philosophy behind the rather faithful stage adaptation of the gloriously wonderful movie musical SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, now once again charmingly replicated in a smile-inducing local production at Musical Theatre West that continues through July 26 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. An almost scene-by-scene, note-for-note recreation of the superb cinematic masterpiece, the musical theater iteration of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN smartly and painstakingly reenacts every key moment and memorable musical happenstance from the 1952 movie that many have since heralded as one of the best movie musicals of all time. With MTW's latest revival specifically, director/choreographer Jon Engstrom has helmed a joyful production worth experiencing, whether it's your first or hundredth time. And, yes, it rains on stage... and it's a sight to behold! (more...)

BWW Review: DEADPOOL Shakes Up Superhero Genre with Profane Perfection
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 8, 2016

When looking at the history of film, distinct well-worn patterns develop over time; tendencies turn into tropes and conventions become clichés. This has never been truer than in today's Hollywood as reboots and franchises have dominated the calendar for the last two decades, drowning out originality and creativity. However, once every generation or two, a film so exceeds the limitations that an assigned genre has placed on it that it is destined to change the way that we look at cinema forever; The Jazz Singer, CITIZEN KANE, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, THE GODFATHER, PULP FICTION, and now DEADPOOL.
