by Richard Sasanow - May 7, 2015

A season ago, when soprano Olga Peretyatko made her Met debut as Elvira in Bellini's I PURITANI, I marveled at her gorgeous voice and stamina, but noted that her inexperience in the role showed. I hoped for more from her when she got it under her belt. What a difference a year makes! As the heroine in a new production by Fabio Ceresa at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy (a co-venture with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), she was, simply, wonderful, at the performance on April 19. LUNT AND FONTANNE: THE CELESTIALS OF BROADWAY to Play Stage Left Studio, 4/30-5/3LUNT AND FONTANNE: THE CELESTIALS OF BROADWAY to Play Stage Left Studio, 4/30-5/3
by BWW News Desk - Apr 6, 2015

They were married actors. Who worked together, almost exclusively, for decades. Stage actors who chose to turn down big-money offers from Hollywood. Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne ruled Broadway, toured the nation and even played London's West End in the middle of World War II. With the Theatre Guild, they took low salaries to play in acclaimed productions of Shaw, O'Neill and Shakespeare; as well as three plays by their good friend Noel Coward. Laurence Olivier once said, 'Everything I know about acting I learned from Alfred Lunt.' A Broadway theater was named for them in 1958, and the Cole Porter musical 'KISS ME KATE' was inspired by their on and off-stage battles. Hugely famous in their time, they are now almost completely forgotten by the general public. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Brings THE PHILADELPHIA STORY SouthBWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Brings THE PHILADELPHIA STORY South
by Joseph Baker - Apr 27, 2015

George Cukor's 1940 film version of Philip Barry's THE PHILADELPHIA STORY was Katharine Hepburn's return to glory after the actress had been labeled 'box office poison' after the failure of several films. 021The savvy Hepburn was able to bend MGM to her will when it wanted to film Barry's play, and the end result rewarded everyone involved: Hepburn, her old RKO co-star Cary Grant, and the up and coming James Stewart. Not only were Oscar nominations and wins in store, but at the center of it all was Hepburn in all her patrician, high cheek-boned elegance. She may have given greater performances as the tragic, dope-addicted 'Mary Tyrone' in the film version of Eugene O'Neill's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT or as the caustic, sparring 'Eleanor of Aquitaine' in James Goldman's THE LION IN WINTER, but for those who want to see Hepburn at the height of her unusual beauty and comedic gifts, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY is a must. Having seen the film numerous times, I was wary of Theatre Memphis' staging of Barry's work. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, once seen, leaves such an impression that it's rather like tackling a remake of THE WIZARD OF OZ or GONE WITH THE WIND or THE GODFATHER. Director Jason Spitzer has taken the dare, and he and his cast have mostly succeeded in the satiny, stylized production currently playing at Theatre Memphis. (more...)

KINGMAKER to Premiere in West End, May 4KINGMAKER to Premiere in West End, May 4
by BWW News Desk - Apr 22, 2015

Following its Edinburgh Fringe 2014 sell out success, the critically acclaimed Kingmaker hits The Arts Theatre in London and The Marlborough Theatre at The Brighton Fringe this Spring.  The writers of previous Edinburgh Fringe hits Coalition and Making News and multi-award winning director of Instinct For Kindness and Lockerbie - Unfinished Business have teamed with one of the most respected actors of his generation to present a satirical tale of political intrigue, gamesmanship and ambition in the corridors of power. Alan Cox is directed by Hannah Eidinow in Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky's Kingmaker, the story of a fictional yet strangely familiar political figure whose bumbling bonhomie disguises a fierce determination and a heart of steel.  The subject matter of this biting satire is expected to be brought into sharp focus in the last few days of campaigning for the general election and the inevitable political frenzy that follows during the mad month of May.   (more...)
