BWW Interview: Michael Falzon of SWING ON THIS! at Sydney Theatre Royal

He's played everyone, from Galileo Figaro in We Will Rock You, to the titular character of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He's also earned a stellar reputation both here and overseas a soloist in his own right. In fact it's hard to find anyone in the performance industry who doesn't admire the talent, work ethic and congeniality of Michael Falzon. BWW Review: Comparing Small Things To Great: NOT MEDEA at CATF
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 12, 2016

The great legends and myths have their roots in common human experience. Yet it is not always obvious which experience gives rise to them. Take the myth of Medea, the sorceress who aided the hero Jason and who, when Jason cast her aside to make a politically expedient marriage, murdered their two sons. Only part of the story is commonplace: the part about Medea being cast aside. We all know (if we are not ourselves) women (and men) whose spouses have deserted them and left them heartbroken. Few of us, however, know parents, and especially mothers, who have murdered their children for that reason. Nor is it fair to trace the roots of the myth to occasional feelings of 'wanting to kill' Junior; those feelings are seldom serious to begin with, and almost always transient. (more...)

BWW Review: Head to Charming Excelsior for a Nostalgic and Musically Thrilling MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET at Old Log Theatre
by Jill Schafer - Aug 4, 2016

Carl Perkins, 'the king of rockabilly.' Jerry Lee Lewis, 'rock and roll's first great wild man.' Johnny Cash, 'one of the best-selling musicians of all time.' Elvis Presley, simply 'the king.' In 1956, these four men were in their 20s and at the early stages of their influential and prolific careers. They came together for one night at Sun Records in Memphis for a jam session, which was recorded and released as the 'Million Dollar Quartet.' So of course, this story had to be made into a musical. Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux did just that; the musical MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET opened on Broadway in 2010. It only ran for a year, but found success on tour and regionally, as such crowd-pleasing jukebox musicals do. Despite a fairly thin book, it's a great show, precisely because we all know and love these songs and these singers. Even if we weren't alive in 1956, these four artists and their music are an integral part of our musical heritage. The Old Log Theatre recently opened a long run of the show with a fantastic cast that's definitely worth the drive out to charming lake town of Excelsior in the Western Metro. (more...)

Being there are many productions of the iconic musical West Side Story running at any one time, it is imperative that the cast be absolutely brilliant. Indeed, the company at The Noel S. BWW Interview: Between Universal and Silly: MSMT Panel Discusses MAMMA MIA!
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Aug 18, 2016

"It's the music and the storytelling; the storytelling walks a fine line between being universal and silly. There is a lot of humor and a lot of warmth and so many relationships you can connect with. All that coupled with joyful, upbeat, recognizable music - those crazy tunes by those inspired creators - make for magic." Leading lady Lauren Mufson is explaining what she believes to be the enduring appeal of the joyous ABBA musical, Mamma Mia! In which she is currently playing Donna Sheridan, a role she performed on Broadway and national tour. She is joined by a panel of other artists - actors Ian Knauer (Sam Carmichael), Mylinda Hull (Rosie), Chelsea Williams (Sophie) and stage manager Mark Johnson - all involved with the stunning revival that opened to rave reviews at Maine State Music Theatre on August 11th for the last in the Peek Behind the Curtain series of interviews by Broadway World's Carla Maia Verdino-Sullwold, held at Brunswick's Curtis Memorial Library on August 17th. BWW Blog: De'Ja Williams - Missouri All State
by Guest Blogger: De'Ja Williams - Aug 1, 2016

Every two years, across the nation, State Thespian Societies hold an All-State Play. This year, the Missouri All-State Play is the greek tragedy Iphigenia: the sad tale of what happened to Agamemnon's family in order for the greek ships to sail to Troy. In January of this year, the Missouri State Thespian Conference was held in Kansas City, Missouri where six members of my troupe auditioned and interviewed for spots in the show--in between running to individual events and workshops. It was the most emotional audition process I have ever been a part of. It was like being on a bullet train that makes frequent turns and trying to walk in a straight line.  (more...)
