Ensler will also read excerpts from her new book 'In the Body of the World;' Jamie Ann Romero and LOCAL Company member Rachel Fowler will perform pieces from Ensler's 'The Good Body;' Courtney Thomas of the Off-Broadway production of Ensler's 'Emotional Creatures' will perform a piece from Ensler's most recent play; Los Angeles dance pioneer Miss Prissy will introduce Boulder to krump; and throughout the night DJ Savior Breath rides the turntables-- all followed by a complimentary wine and dessert after-party. Today, at an event overflowing with fans of her work, Tony Award-winning playwright, performer, and activist Eve Ensler announced that Berkeley Repertory Theatre will present the world premiere of her new show. On the stage of the Roda Theatre, she revealed that Emotional Creature - which was developed during workshops in Johannesburg and Paris - will debut in Berkeley next June. Berkeley's acclaimed Aurora Theatre Company has announced a call for submissions for its eighth season of the Global Age Project (GAP) festival of new works. The company will choose four new plays to be presented as staged readings with professional directors and actors during the GAP festival in February of 2013; the festival will coincide with the company's fully-staged World Premiere of Anthony Clarvoe's OUR PRACTICAL HEAVEN, directed by Allen McKelvey, the third Aurora main stage production to develop from the GAP. Each of the four finalists will receive a $1,000 award and their work will be considered for further development and production during Aurora Theatre Company's regular season; out of town artists will receive travel and accommodation expenses. The submission period opens today, May 22; deadline for play submission is July 31, 2012. Finalists will be announced in early December 2012. (more...)

Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced the cast and creative team for its world premiere of Eve Ensler's EMOTIONAL CREATURE. This positive and propulsive new show - from the Tony Award-winning playwright, performer, and activist who created The Vagina Monologues - features a choreographer, a composer, four top designers, and an ensemble of talented young women. Directed by Obie Award-winner Jo Bonney, Emotional Creature plays only 36 performances in the Roda Theatre. The limited engagement at Berkeley Rep begins previews on June 14, opens June 22, and runs through July 15. The lead producers of this premiere are Wayne Jordan and Quinn Delaney, Marjorie Randolph, and Jack and Betty Schafer; the executive producer is the Strauch Kulhanjian Family. Alley Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Boyd announces the cast and creative team for Alan Ayckbourn's science fiction comedy Communicating Doors. Eleven plays penned by Alan Ayckbourn have been produced by the Alley, including the American premiere of Henceforward, directed by Ayckbourn, in 1987 and House & Garden in 2002. Alan Ayckbourn has been inducted into the American Theatre's Hall of Fame, received the 2010 Critics' Circle Award for Services to the Arts, became the first British playwright to receive both Olivier and Tony Special Lifetime Achievement Awards and was knighted in 1997 for services to the theatre. Hartford Stage will celebrate the artistic partnership among director Michael Wilson, set designer Jeff Cowie, and sound designer John Gromada in Working with Michael, a multi-media exhibit in 'room,' Hartford Stage's new function space. At the same time, the theatre will unveil Part II of Capturing the Moment, a season-long retrospective of the work of company photographer T. Charles Ericson, commemorating his 25 years with Hartford Stage. The Ericson installation will be in the theatre's upper lobby. The exhibits coincide with the run of Divine Rivalry, a world premiere play by noted political journalist Michael Kramer, which is the last MainStage production Wilson will be directing as Hartford Stage Artistic Director. Cowie designed the sets for the production, and Gromada the sound and original music. Official opening of both exhibits is Wednesday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m., directly before the 7:30 performance of Divine Rivalry. (more...)

When I first heard the title Potted Potter – The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff, my American mind immediately thought of the slang term we use for inebriated and figured Jefferson Turner and Daniel Clarkson's two-person, 70-minute presentation would be some kind of irreverent adult spoof of J.K. Rowling's septet of Harry Potter novels.  But no, “potted,” to our Brit friends, merely means abridged, and the show, which actually doesn't involve much parody, is really more of a wholesome family entertainment; not that there's anything wrong with that, as we say on the Upper West Side. Eleven plays penned by Alan Ayckbourn have been produced by the Alley, including the American premiere of Henceforward, directed by Ayckbourn, in 1987 and House & Garden in 2002. Alan Ayckbourn has been inducted into the American Theatre's Hall of Fame, received the 2010 Critics' Circle Award for Services to the Arts, became the first British playwright to receive both Olivier and Tony Special Lifetime Achievement Awards and was knighted in 1997 for services to the theatre. The Good Body, performed for one night only at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, is Eve Ensler's younger, less well-known companion piece to THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES. It follows a similar format - a series of monologues told by a cast of women from a representative cross section of races, backgrounds and nationalities. Berkeley Repertory Theatre to Give Away 3,000 Tickets to EMOTIONAL CREATURE

Today, Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced that it's giving away 3,000 free tickets for the world premiere of Eve Ensler's Emotional Creature in June. The Tony Award-winning theatre will deliver the free tickets to fellow nonprofit organizations and to government agencies that serve key constituencies, including at-risk youth, teens and young adults of both genders, and abuse victims of all ages, with priority given to groups that serve women and girls. THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES to Make Off-Broadway Return in Spanish, Begin. May 6

Eve Ensler's groundbreaking show, The Vagina Monologues, will return in a new form when the first New York City revival opens for a Spanish language engagement at its original off-Broadway home. Los Monologos de la Vagina will begin performances at the Westside Theatre (407 West 43rd Street) on May 6 . Opening night will be announced. Mexican director Jaime Matarredona helms the production. It is produced by Morris Gilbert and Federico Gonzalez Compean. This will mark the first time that a mainstream off-Broadway theatre has hosted a commercial Spanish language play for an ongoing run.
