BWW Recap: It's a Rose-Colored World for INTRUDERSBWW Recap: It's a Rose-Colored World for INTRUDERS
by Courtney Henley - Sep 20, 2014

“A rose by any other name should smell as sweet.” Shakespeare may have written it, but INTRUDERS creators seem to find an awful lot of inspiration in that quote. For a while now, Qui Reverti members have been name-dropping Rose in almost every conversation. Just to make sure we're aware of how key she is, costume and set designers have thrown bits of red into almost every scene involving a Reverti member (think Madison's backpack). She's obviously a high-ranking member of Qui Reverti, but who exactly is she? (more...)

by Matt Tamanini - Oct 8, 2014

When I was a kid, my parents never let me go to any of the traveling carnivals and circuses that crisscrossed the Midwest. They were afraid that the Ferris Wheels, Roller Coasters, and Tilt-a-Whirls that were hastily assembled in rundown shopping center parking lots weren't safe, and that if I was to climb into one of the rides, I could become the victim of a terrible tragedy. Having watched the two hour premiere of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW, I now think that my parents significantly underestimated just how dangerous those wayfaring fairs actually were. (more...)

by Jeanmarie Simpson - Oct 24, 2014

It's really interesting to me in any kind of Shakespeare how people speak in definites, when there's no way to know them. This one seems to be one that actors hold very near and dear to their hearts. Some people are into the superstition and it's bad luck to say the title, but to me, it's just a frickin' word. It's funny to me. (more...)

by Matt Tamanini - Oct 22, 2014

I was fortunate enough to have screeners of the first three hours of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW sent to me by FX, so that means that my reviews of those episodes (Episode 1 and Episode 2) are as well-thought out and developed as I could make them. However, I began to think that one of the most entertaining elements of the horror genre is being able to share your shock and disgust with other people. So, since FX did not send out screeners for this week's episode, I decided that instead of writing a lengthy analysis after tonight's hour, I would live-recap it, and hopefully be able to share those feelings of fear and enjoyment with all of you electronically. by Matt Tamanini - Oct 15, 2014

If you are reading this review, you probably loved last week's two-hour AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW premiere as much as I did, but while last week thrived on a sensory assault of spectacular images and fascinating character portrayals, tonight's episode found inventive ways to not only deliver those incredible aesthetics again, but to also set up what has all the makings of an incredibly compelling season of stories. Simply said, this was one of the finest hours of television writing I have seen in a long time. (more...)

Angela Bassett. If that name doesn't mean anything to you, shame! The Academy Award nominee has appeared in everything from HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK, to MEET THE ROBINSONS, and most recently, AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW. Bassett appeared last season in COVEN as Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen, and returns this season as Desiree Dupree, the hermaphrodite. Recently, I got the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with Angela Bassett, and she answered all of our burning questions about Desiree and the process behind making AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Summer in New York is traditionally a quiet time for Broadway, although the now-previewing Tupac Shakur musical, Holler If Ya Hear Me is certainly creating quite a buzz. Dr. Lucky's Surrealist Burlesque at Coney Island USA Set for 8/8Dr. Lucky's Surrealist Burlesque at Coney Island USA Set for 8/8
by BWW News Desk - Jul 21, 2014

Surrealist Burlesque returns to the Coney Island USA Sideshow by the Seashore stage with its 6th incarnation of what has been hailed by the press as "Striptease meets Socrates" (Brooklyn Paper). This years' Surrealist Burlesque presents Flaming Creatures, a tribute to Jack Smith's ground-breaking work that pioneered experimental film-making and representations of gender fluidity in the early 1960s. Considered by many to be a founding father of performance art and an innovator of underground film, Jack Smith's film was officially deemed "obscene" by a New York Criminal Court. Flaming Creatures at Coney Island USA features stars of the art world and burlesque stage who have created acts in the spirit of Smith's queer, Utopic landscape. Starring Carmelita Tropicana, Dirty Martini, Dr. Lucky, Jennifer Miller, Jason Mejias, Julie Atlas Muz, and Poison Eve. With production numbers featuring the Dali Dancers. Video installation by Joe E. Jeffreys and Ves Pitts. Living Surrealist Object Sculptures by Jenny Pierce, featuring Tiny D, Zoe Ziegfeld, Lillian Bustle, Mia Julep, and Clara Coquette. Music by Velvet Crayon and DJ MomoTaro. (more...)

by Matt Tamanini - Jul 10, 2014

This week's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE had a very Broadway feel to it with Josh Bergasse, the choreographer of the upcoming ON THE TOWN revival, staging a Top-20 routine to the show's anthem 'New York, New York' (the one by Bernstein, Comden, and Green, not Kander and Ebb). As we learned last week, this season's winner will earn a spot in the musical's ensemble. While some people, including @Actor_Friend, don't like this idea, remember, the last network show to give away roles on Broadway brought us Laura Osnes, so let's reserve judgment, just in case a reality show brings us more Broadway royalty this time. by Courtney Henley - Jan 23, 2015

It's been a long and winding road for The Freaks in this season's AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Death, betrayal, sass, and some good, old-fashioned blood baths (literally and figuratively) sprinkled in for good measure made for quite a show. This season (like every other season) may have divided some viewers regarding whether it was spectacular or just spectacularly bad, but one thing's for certain: there's a lot to discuss. My fellow recapper and TV-obsessed friend Kara McCoy and I did just that. Join us, but beware: spoilers abound! (more...)

BWW Reviews: 3-D Theatricals Big Bold SIDE SHOW Is a Hot TicketBWW Reviews: 3-D Theatricals Big Bold SIDE SHOW Is a Hot Ticket
by Don Grigware - Apr 27, 2015

The musical Side Show played Broadway in 1997 for 91 performances and was Tony nominated but never got the recognition it deserved. A revamped version went to Broadway in 2014, but it, too, closed early. Like Jason Robert Brown's Parade, another noteworthy Broadway miss, it's worth the attention, but its dark grotesque presentation of carnival freak shows is not the most appealing fare for commercial theatre audiences. Many are repelled by the sight of a man with three legs, a bearded lady, a half-man, half-woman or in the case of Daisy and Violet Hilton, by the appearance of twins who are conjoined. The girls hated the term Siamese twins, for they were not Siamese, and also if people asked them if they wanted to be normal. What is normal? Now in a revival production of the original - not the 2013 revamped production, which played La Jolla and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. before Broadway - by 3-D Theatricals at Plummer Auditorium, Fullerton, Side Show comes out as winning and memorable as when it first appeared.
