BWW Reviews: ANNA NICOLE's 36DDs Gain AAA Status with New York City Opera at BAM's Next Wave Festival
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 19, 2013

With a story that is somehow poignant despite its scatological language, ANNA NICOLE's heroine is nicer than Berg's LULU, less lucky than TRAVIATA's Violetta and more cunning than MANON's Manon (though maybe not MANON LESCAUT's). Whatever she is, Anna Nicole Smith is definitely a full-fledged operatic heroine. As portrayed by American soprano Sarah Joy Miller in the local premiere of the Marc-Anthony Turnage-Richard Thomas work about the life and times of minor celebrity Smith, this is a wildly entertaining evening. The opera, which debuted two years ago in London, opened on September 17 at Brooklyn Academy of Music, compliments of New York City Opera and BAM's Next Wave Festival, directed by Richard Jones. Consumers Taking Credit Card Anti-Fraud Measures Into Their Own Hands; Don't Feel Merchants Are Heeding Call
by BWW News Desk - Oct 24, 2013

PALO ALTO, CA - According to the new Jumio Consumer Insights Study: Fraud and Identity released today by Jumio, Inc. and conducted online by Harris Interactive, Americans may be ASKING merchants to tighten-up fraud protection practices, but they don't feel merchants are taking the necessary steps to protect both their customers and themselves. The study finds that over two in five Americans (44%) have chosen not to sign the back of their credit or debit cards, instead writing 'see ID' or leaving it blank. This activity signals a consumer desire to have merchants verify their IDs, acting as a homegrown security measure created by consumers, rather than merchants or providers. However, the tactic is not achieving its intended outcome, as 87% of respondents report that a majority of the time that they make a purchase with their credit or debit card, they are not asked to present proof of their ID. BWW Reviews: Farcical Funny Musical Blood Bath at Blank Canvas
by Roy Berko - Oct 15, 2013

As audience members smilingly walked out of Blank Canvas's THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MUSICAL! covered with spatterings of stage blood, I could only think that something appears to have gone off-course in Cleveland theatre. On stage at local venues are the blood revenge musical, SWEENEY TODD, as well as the story of the maniacal murderous RICHARD III. Then there is the burning up of a boy and the live burial of his mother in LILIES at convergence continuum. Now, I had just seen a psycho killer who uses a chainsaw, knives, hammers and baseball bats to bludgeon his victims. Victims who sing gleefully about their demise. (more...)

Starting today, the Fine Arts Center is delivering a love letter to musical comedy with The Drowsy Chaperone, a show the New York Times praised as 'a revved-up spoof of a 1920s song-and-dance frolic.' If your musical taste runs to Elliott Carter--or even Nico Muhly, whose TWO BOYS premiered at the Met this fall--then Kirke Mechem's THE RIVALS, which had its NY premiere this month at the Bronx Opera Company, may not be your cup of tea.
