by Stage Tube - May 22, 2015

Happy Birthday, Laurence Olivier! Born in 1907, Olivier remains one of the most revered actors of the 20th century. He was the first artistic director of the National Theatre of Great Britain and its main stage is named in his honour. Olivier's career as a stage and film actor spanned more than six decades and included a wide variety of roles, from the title role in Shakespeare's Othello and Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night to the sadistic Nazi dentist Christian Szell in Marathon Man and the kindly but determined Nazi-hunter in The Boys from Brazil. Olivier played more than 120 stage roles: Richard III, Macbeth, Romeo, Hamlet, Othello, Uncle Vanya, and Archie Rice in The Entertainer. He appeared in nearly sixty films, including William Wyler's Wuthering Heights, Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus, Otto Preminger's Bunny Lake Is Missing, Richard Attenborough's Oh! What a Lovely War, and A Bridge Too Far, Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Sleuth, John Schlesinger's Marathon Man, Daniel Petrie's The Betsy, Desmond Davis' Clash of the Titans, and his own Henry V, Hamlet, and Richard III. (more...)

Diana Ross Announces First Concerts Ever On The Hawaiian IslandsDiana Ross Announces First Concerts Ever On The Hawaiian Islands
by BWW News Desk - Mar 20, 2015

With a career spanning over six decades it's inconceivable to think Diana Ross has never performed a concert in Hawaii. That's all about to change as Ms. Ross brings her magical live stage production to The Islands. The concert is a complete theatrical experience, filled with breathtaking costumes, an elegant stage design, and a massive catalog of hit songs, such as 'Stop! In the Name of Love', 'Touch Me in the Morning', and 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough.' Reviews have been stellar for her recent shows, proving that the icon of stage and screen is still in her prime. The Star-Telegram in Texas raves: 'Diana Ross held the fortunate (audience)...in the palm of her hand from the beginning, and never let them go.' As the star herself has stated, 'My interaction is with the audience on a one-to-one. I always try to see their faces and try to see their eyes. It's that harmonious vibration, good energy that flows between the audience and myself and the band and the music. Music is like love. It feels good. It's about sharing. Music is like the heartbeat of our world.' (more...)

BWW Reviews: PAMELA LEWIS Brings Interpretive Heat To Super Cool Billy Joel Songbook Tribute at the Metropolitan RoomBWW Reviews: PAMELA LEWIS Brings Interpretive Heat To Super Cool Billy Joel Songbook Tribute at the Metropolitan Room
by Remy Block - Jan 26, 2015

Pamela Lewis (a.k.a. Champagne Pam), the 2013 BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Award winner for "Best Female Vocalist" (for her show Daddy's Little Girl), performed her new solo cabaret show, New York State of Mind: The Songs of Billy Joel, in front of a rowdy, revved-up, packed house at the Metropolitan Room on Friday and Saturday, January 16 and 17. The singer with champagne-colored streaks in her long brown hair, Lewis embodies cool. And hot. She's a brassy chick from Long Island who knows who she is and she wants to party with you. In this show, she celebrates her roots, singing the songs of another Long Islander she grew up loving, first for his tuneful pop melodies and later for his words. It's cool when a woman sings an entire show of songs written by a man, doesn't fear using the "wrong" pronouns, and puts her own spin on them by changing the feel, the tempo, and the arrangements. Pamela Lewis does all that with verve and then some in this show. (more...)

BWW Reviews: JOEY ARIAS Presents A Sympatico Centennial Tribute to Billie Holiday at Lincoln Center's American SongbookBWW Reviews: JOEY ARIAS Presents A Sympatico Centennial Tribute to Billie Holiday at Lincoln Center's American Songbook
by Alix Cohen - Feb 27, 2015

Vocalist Joey Arias is not what he appears to the uninitiated. This is not a drag performer executing pastiche, but rather an artist serious about music with the talent to offer a full-blooded show. Lifelong affinity for Billie Holiday first professionally surfaced in 1987's Recording Arias on Holiday and continued with the Off-Broadway run of Strange Fruit, an homage to the icon. Her concert Wednesday night for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, with evocative musical arrangement by Matt Ray, brings Arias' devotion "all the way from downtown above 14th Street." Akin to a Las Vegas show, We 3 Kings works dynamically as a showcase for its 3 artists: Luca Ellis, Shawn Klush and Brandon Michael Jones, especially for Jones, currently considered the premiere tribute artist of Michael Jackson. Now onstage at the El Portal in NoHo through New Year's Eve, it's enjoyable fare for those of us who grew up with and lived through the music of all three. Frank Sinatra (Luca Ellis) was the King of Swing of the 40s on up, Elvis Presley (Shawn Klush) the King of Rock and Roll in the 50s and Michael Jackson (Jones) the King of Pop commencing in the 60s as the tiniest member of The Jackson 5 (Jacquez Shanigan).
