BWW Recap: GREY'S ANATOMY Avoids Catastrophe, but Hasn't Yet Found the Cure
by Lauren Gienow - Sep 30, 2016

“Catastrophe And The Cure”—The second episode of season 13 of GREY'S ANATOMY aired last night, and the show continues to move each plot forward in interesting ways—Alex continues to face the repercussions of his assault on Deluca—personally, professionally, and legally; Both Jo and Deluca also have to face the emotional and professional fallout of Alex's actions; the Meredith/Maggie/Riggs love triangle continues its slow and awkward burn toward inevitable hurt feelings—even though Meredith somehow seems to think that this is avoidable; Jackson and April work to figure out the whole parenting-while-divorced-and-while-mom-is-recovering-from-surgery thing; and Owen and Amelia adapt to being married and therefore kind of needing to communicate with each other—a skill at which this couple has always fluctuated from being awful to amazing. Those fluctuations continued last night. (more...)

BWW Review: First Run Theater's Engaging TRICK AND ANOTONIA
by Chris Gibson - Jul 19, 2016

I did some creative work for First Run Theater during their early years, underscoring some shows, and even directing a couple of one acts. I admired the fact that they provided a testing ground, a full staging, of works by local playwrights. That's an opportunity that goes far beyond a staged reading, and actually brings an author's vision to life with an immediacy that's filtered through the talent that presents it. I went back to a theater I hadn't stepped a foot in in years, and saw what I think is one their finest productions, TRICK AND ANOTONIA, written by Jenn Ciavarella. Although it could still use a bit of tightening, its a compelling tale, the actors all do solid work, and Landon Shaw's direction and scenic design is very thoughtfully conceived and executed. BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS, Menier Chocolate Factory, 12 July 2016
by Marianka Swain - Jul 13, 2016

Anyone who ever played 'shop' as a child, trading real or imaginary objects over a table, will experience a thrill of recognition at Fiasco Theater's stripped-back take on Sondheim and James Lapine's ode to and deconstruction of storytelling. That's what we get for the swiftly evoked bakery, and there's a dressmaker's dummy standing in for a tree, a feather duster and Christmas tree ornament for a golden egg-laying hen, a ladder for a mighty tower, a wooden crate for a throne, shadow play during the action sequences, and flapping pieces of paper as the ever-helpful birds. BWW Review: 5th Avenue's THE LITTLE MERMAID is Swimmingly Magical
by Jay Irwin - Dec 2, 2016

The original animated film of "Disney's The Little Mermaid" is arguably one of the best of the Disney canon. With songs written by the incredible Alan Menken and Howard Ashman it marked the rebirth of the Disney animated musicals. The original conversion of it into a Broadway musical was not so great. With bad staging and flow, achieving the illusion of swimming by putting the actors on Heelys (shoes with wheels in the heels) so they would glide across stage, and additional songs from Menken and Glenn Slater (owing to the passing of the great Howard Ashman) the show lost much of it's core cleverness and heart in favor of the cliche and gimmicky. Now there's a new version with a reworked book and score and much improved staging which is currently being offered at the 5th Avenue Theatre and while it still may not have that magical greatness of the original film it does manage a magic of its own largely due to some new stage magic and a stellar cast including an Ariel (Diana Huey) who is the most layered, honest, real and still adorable Disney Princess ever.
