The American Theatre Wing announced today that its annual gala, held this past Monday evening at the Plaza Hotel, was the most successful in the organization's history, raising over $750,000 (besting the previous record, which was set in 2013, by more than $50,000). All proceeds from the evening will benefit the education and outreach programs of the American Theatre Wing, which include SpringboardNYC, the Theatre Intern Network, the National Theatre Company Grants and the Jonathan Larson Grants, and will also support free access for students, aspiring professionals, and the general public to programming on AmericanTheatreWing.org, including the long running 'Working in the Theatre' media program. The seventh annual Living for Today: 'Shing-a-Ling: A Night with the Broadway Urchins' was held earlier this week at Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette St). After bringing down the house at the sixth annual concert in January 2014 with a surprise appearance, the three 'urchins' from the Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors (Carla J. Hargrove, Trisha Jeffrey, DeQuina Moore) took to the stage in a concert of their very own, featuring hits from the radio, the stage, and of course from the musical that brought them together. The concert benefits Gilana's Fund, which celebrates and encourages educational programming promoting acceptance and understanding of our communities, each other, and ourselves. The groundbreaking medical advancement was achieved by dentist William T. G. Morton during a procedure performed by Dr. John C. Warren at Boston's own MGH. Happy Birthday Angela Lansbury! Lansbury - who returned to Broadway in this year's revival of The Best Man - has enjoyed an unprecedented career, first as a star of motion pictures, and then as an award-winning stage actor in New York and London. She appeared as Madame Armfeldt in the 2009 revival of A Little Night Music, and before that as Madame Arcati in the 2009 revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, for which she won her fifth Tony Award, as well as Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. She performed in 2006 in Terrence McNally's Deuce, for which she was also nominated for a Tony Award. She made her Broadway debut in 1957 as Bert Lahr's wife in Hotel Paradiso. In 1960, she returned to Broadway as Joan Plowright's mother in the season's most acclaimed drama, A Taste of Honey, by Shelagh Delaney. A year later, she starred in her first musical, Anyone Can Whistle. Lansbury returned to Broadway in triumph in 1966 in Mame, for which she won her first Tony Award. (more...)

Gore Vidal's The Best Man a political drama is the current production of the Olathe Civic Theatre Association in Olathe, Kan. The play, which opened on November 7, runs through November 21. John Robinson directs the OCTA production stating in the playbill that it had been 15 years since he had done drama and had sworn he would never do drama again. The producers of Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy You Can't Take It With You announce a student rush policy. A limited number of student rush tickets, which are subject to availability, can be purchased with a valid student ID at the box office of The Longacre Theatre (220 West 48th Street) when the box office opens for the day of the performance on a first come first served basis. The box office of opens at 10am Monday through Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. Student rush tickets are $30 each (includes facilities fee) and are limited to one (1) ticket per valid student ID.
