BWW Interview: Legendary Japanese Theatre Artist Hideki Noda on ONE GREEN BOTTLE at La MaMa ETC
by Cindy Sibilsky - Mar 9, 2020

Hideki Noda's powerfully dynamic, physically demanding, utterly engaging and thoroughly entertaining works have been seen across the world's stage and now he returns to one of the most significant homes of the underground theatre movement in NYC -- The Ellen Stewart Theater at La MaMa -- in One Green Bottle, playing from February 29-March 8th. The three-person gender-swapping show puts an absurdist spin on the current self-driven, self-obsessed 'selfie' society. One Green Bottle is unmissable, uproariously hysterical and absolutely delightful with depth that lingers long after the last 'one green bottle should accidentally fall...' as the song goes.

BWW Interview: Varla Jean Merman Talks Upcoming Show WONDER MERMAN, Inspiring Women, and The Changing Landscape of Drag
by Troy Frisby - May 1, 2018

Drag artist Varla Jean Merman's new show, WONDER MERMAN, pays tribute to inspirational women throughout history, both real and fictional. The idea that "behind every great man, there's a great woman" feels tone-deaf, at best. But a more arcane expression that may actually hold true is that behind many a great drag queen, there's a great man.

Tomorrow night at Cumberland County Playhouse, the company, cast and crew unveil the 2017 model of Smoke on the Mountain, which marks the 24th year of the musical playing in Crossville. BWW Reviews: OTSL's ELIXIR OF LOVE is intoxicating!
by Steve Callahan - Jun 3, 2014

Well, it worked on me! 'The Elixir of Love' opened last night at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and after only a sip or two I fell head over heels for it. At the end of the evening I was, like Nemorino, giddy (oh, let's admit it, the better word is 'drunk') with happiness and delight. It was simply perfection!

BWW Reviews: WE NEED A LITTLE CHIRSTMAS is Nostalgic
by Teresa Rodrick - Dec 10, 2013

I grew up in the 70's and loved watching all the variety shows that were on TV at the time: Sony and Cher, Donnie and Marie, Carol Brunette and others. WE NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS was very much in the style of these shows and made me very nostalgic for my childhood and when I used to believe in Santa Claus (now I believe he is the feeling of Christmas).

BWW Reviews: Shocking, Sensual, Surreal Graham
by Mary Callahan - Nov 22, 2013

The Martha Graham Dance Company performed an intimate performance this week as part of the Company's “Graham Deconstructed” Series and Performa 13. The evening, entitled “Surreal Graham,” consisted of two pieces that exemplify the aura of surrealism, which sought to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality through uncensored, unfiltered, and unconscious expression. Graham is perhaps the ultimate surrealist choreographer in that her work was ridden with shocking, sexual, and even violent undertones, themes that were popular amongst surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte.

SIGNS OF A NEW DAY Plays Looby Theatre, 1/22 - 2/6
by BWW News Desk - Jan 22, 2010

That serendipitous encounter with Looby's photograph and the accompanying marker in the lobby of the community center/public library/theatre complex that bears his name, led German to further research which 'fired [her] up,' and has now, in turn, led to Signs of a New Day: The Z. Alexander Looby Story, her new play set for its world premiere Friday night in a production by Amun Ra Theatre, presented in the theatre that bears Looby's name, and continuing through February 6.

Carolyn German's New Z. Alexander Looby Play Takes Shape for 2010 Opening
by Jeffrey Ellis - Dec 4, 2009

Like hundreds, maybe even thousands, of other Nashvillians before and since, Carolyn German would walk through the lobby of the Z. Alexander Looby Theatre, passing by the historical marker heralding Looby's role in Nashville history without really giving it much thought. Then one day, during a visit to the Looby Center in her role as director of theatre for Metro Nashville Parks, German stopped and read intently the information included on the plaque, learning that Looby was an attorney who played in a key role in Nashville's storied civil rights history.
