Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, a TimeOutNY/Kids "Best Camp for 2012" which has just completed its 45th season, will present a special off-season event, An Afternoon With Jane Monheit, performances by the internationally acclaimed jazz singer and Usdan alumna, on Saturday October 14. The Grammy-nominated vocalist will perform two 75-minute concerts with her band, at 2 PM and then a repeat performance at 4:30 PM at Usdan's intimate Maurice B. Hexter Recital Hall. (more...)

L&L's shows this season explore Shakespeare on Broadway, iconic singer/lyricist Peggy Lee, a fresh take on Jerome Kern, and our look at Vernon Duke's and W. S. Gilbert's influence on Broadway. The season is curated by series artistic director Deborah Grace Winer (also returning as artistic director for one of the shows), and a line-up of guest artistic directors - Rob Fisher (with host Sheldon Harnick), Billy Stritch, David Loud and Mark Lamos. Terry Burrell Takes on Aunt Eller in Arena Stage's OKLAHOMA!

Faye Butler, who portrays Aunt Eller in the summer revival of Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater's acclaimed and record-setting production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, will transition out of her Helen Hayes-nominated role to begin rehearsals for Arena Stage's 2011/12 season opening play Trouble in Mind. Butler will be replaced by Terry Burrell, who was last at Arena Stage in the 2007/08 world-premiere musical The Women of Brewster Place. Burrell joins the Oklahoma! company August 2, and her first performance will be August 9. Burrell was 'lovely and heartbreaking...spellbinding' in Signature Theatre's Show Boat (TalkinBroadway.com), and will be a strong addition to the cast. (more...)

A seven-years-and-counting fixture at New York's famed Café Carlyle (a spot he inherited from one of his mentors, the late Bobby Short), Steve Tyrell--a long-time behind-the-scenes music veteran-turned chart-topping jazz superstar--has returned to Orange County, California for a series of highly-entertaining shows at the Samueli Theatre as part of Segerstrom Center for the Arts' wonderful Cabaret Series through Sunday, January 8. Backed by a truly kick-ass jazz ensemble led by his music director Quinn Johnson behind the piano, Tyrell's rousing show truly set out to showcase a feel-good time, injecting lots of life to some very familiar tunes from the Great American Songbook. LA Chamber Orchestra Honors Supporters in 'Taking a Chance On Love' Gala, 2/2

Love will be in the air when the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) honors the generosity and dedication of long-time supporters Jennifer and Royce Diener (Santa Monica residents) and David K. and Kay Duke Ingalls (Santa Fe, New Mexico residents) at its annual gala, "Taking a Chance on Love," on February 2, 2013, 6 pm, at The California Club in downtown Los Angeles. David K. Ingalls served as President of LACO's Board of Directors from 1980 to 1983 and as Chair from 1983 to 1988; and Jennifer Diener served as President from 1991 to 1995 and Chair from 1995 to 1998. Both were instrumental in establishing the Orchestra as a premier cultural institution of Los Angeles and currently serve on LACO's newly established Emeritus Board of Directors. The evening's theme is a nod to the era of George Gershwin and Ballets Russes composer Vladimir Dukelsky - better known as Vernon Duke - whose enchanting tunes are at the heart of the Great American Songbook. Duke is Ingalls' late husband. Proceeds benefit LACO's concert series, radio broadcasts and community engagement programs. (more...)

More than 20 years after its premiere, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens are re-inventing their first musical with Tony-nominated director Thomas Kail (In the Heights, Lombardi, Magic/Bird), choreographer Bradley Rapier (So You Think You Can Dance, Jesus Christ Superstar) and new orchestrations by music director Lynne Shankel (Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Altar Boyz).
