BWW Review: Cabaret Celebrates Sylvia Syms on Night Three of the Mabel Mercer Foundation Cabaret Convention
by Casey Mink - Oct 23, 2016

On the penultimate night of the 2016 Cabaret Convention, presented by the Mabel Mercer Foundation, 11 fantastic cabaret artists---those who are celebrated in the form as well as those who are emerging alike---assembled to salute the late and legendary Sylvia Syms. The evening, hosted by one of Syms' closest confidants, the critic Rex Reed, was brassy, delivered wonderful anecdotes, and was ultimately very moving musically, much like Syms herself. A black and white photograph of Syms, accurately capturing her maternal warmth, hung high inside the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center throughout the evening, which was formatted in two distinct segments. Act One was comprised of each performer taking to the stage alone to sing one of Syms' lesser known cabaret staples, or the songs which she "rescued" from obscurity such as those cut from golden age musicals. Act Two saw the performers again take on a Syms staple, but those which were more well-known hits and standards, displaying the full range of Syms' nightclub chops. (more...)

Photo Coverage: Rex Reed Hosts 27th New York Cabaret Convention Day Three
by Stephen Sorokoff - Oct 21, 2016

KT Sullivan made an astute call and turned over the creation of the third night of the Cabaret Convention to host Rex Reed.  If there is anyone in the world who symbolizes music sophistication with a flawless comprehension of what good cabaret performance is about it is the elegant Mr. Reed. The Convention's final evening is yet to be heard (tonight), but last evening must have been one of the finest chapters in the long history of Donald Smith and the Mabel Mercer Foundation's twenty seven year old creation. The musicians, singers, and material, which honored the legendary cabaret performer Sylvia Syms truly represented the highest quality of cabaret performance. Rex also made an important artistic decision….he included himself as one of the vocalists.  Rex Reed was a participating member of the golden age of New York life and his unique ability to verbally convey it's history honored Sylvia Syms, who as Rex pointed out at the start of the evening…..died the way she wanted, singing in a  nightclub (Oak Room Algonquin)  to a standing ovation.  She collapsed into the arms of audience member Cy Coleman.   (more...)

BWW Review: RUTHLESS THE MUSICAL Kills at Creative Cauldron
by Keith Tittermary - Oct 11, 2016

"Dying is easy, comedy is hard". The old adage has been attributed to countless comedians over the years. When a musical comedy attempts to combine comedy and death, the outcome can either be successful (think Monty Python) or fall on its face. Ruthless! The Musical, a 1992 off Broadway campy musical, which opened this week at Creative Cauldron in Falls Church, falls into the latter category. The intermission-less show written by Marvin Laird and Joel Paley has funny bits, and a few memorable songs, but overall the piece, which has had a successful life in regional theater, is just flat. Sure, it spoofs musicals like Gypsy and movies like All About Eve, but the humor is a bit rudimentary and plays more like a bad SNL skit, then a well-polished farce. (more...)

Festival activities include art, craft and food vendors as well as a classic car and local police and fire safety displays. Everyone is encouraged to wear theme customs. Savor nostalgia for the places that are near and dear to heart, recall community/family traditions; but perhaps more importantly, renew community experiences. Published in paper print, copies of Eco-legacy - a millennium woman's heritage will be available during the festival and are available at Laurel Gallery located at 2805 Hungary Road in Richmond (Henrico) Virginia or through Wright's LuLu Sylvia's Store option, Attend a Community's Harvest Festival - Sponsored by Laurel Presbyterian Church, on October 22nd (rain date of 29th) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. a Halloween theme festival takes place in the church's Fellowship Hall. BWW Feature: Salute to Edward Albee
by Bryan-Keyth Wilson - Oct 10, 2016

It was during my undergrad years at Sam Houston State University that I was introduced to the writings of Edward Albee. Every so often there's a playwright that comes along and changes the landscape of the American Theatre. It was in 1963 when WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? debuted on Broadway and shook the foundation of the theatre world. Albee's work delves into the human psyche with an in-depth view of relationships, marriage, and sex. His presence will be truly missed but his mark on the theatre world is undoubtedly immortal.
