Fratellanza to Bring THE MUTE QUIRE to Ireland and China
by BWW News Desk - Jul 6, 2014

The Mute Quire, a theater piece created by Fratellanza, premiered in Michigan to critical acclaim and sold-out houses in 2012. Fratellanza has rewritten The Mute Quire and, as an international ensemble from America, China and Italy, has been chosen to perform it at the Galway and Macau Fringe Festivals. The baffling but true events surrounding the printing of Shakespeare's First Folio, are told in afreewheeling story of a blind printer, his illiterate apprentice, and a buffoonish actor from the King's Men. BWW Reviews: Danny Kaye Returns to Arlington
by Keith Tittermary - Jul 25, 2014

'If Danny Kaye had not been born,' a Hollywood writer once observed, 'no one could possibly have invented him. It would have been stretching credibility far past the breaking point'. Those words begin almost every biography of the legendary Danny Kaye and it is fitting words. Kaye may not have been as popular as Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, or may have been the person to get when Donald O'Connor wasn't available, but Kaye left a legacy on entertainment. You can narrow down to a handful of influential artists whose legacy is still being found in modern day entertainers. You can see pieces of Kaye in early Robin Williams, or Will Ferrell in his Saturday Night Live days. Kaye took the 'song and dance' man routine and went one step further - the patter song and the foppish mannerisms that made his style unique. (more...)

BWW Reviews: TAME. Offers Stirring Drama at Capital Fringe
by Jennifer Perry - Jul 21, 2014

'TAME.' is one of those plays in this year's Capital Fringe Festival that's a bit of a rarity among all of the zany offerings. It's something new, something inspired by the classics, something that offers a rich story, and something that's very well-acted. It actually turned out to be one of the offerings this year that I enjoyed the most. (more...)

BWW Reviews: POTS at The Works Series Takes a Giant Step with 4000 MILES
by Joseph Baker - Jul 13, 2014

Amy Herzog's family drama (albeit a drama with a number of very funny moments) 4000 MILES is unobtrusively generating a thoughtful, low-key alternative to the outsized HAIRSPRAY (already a sellout at 'Big Sister' Playhouse on the Square just a block or so away); and it's a safe bet that a number of theatre-going Memphians are already trekking south to DeSoto Family Theatre's epic presentation of LES MISERABLES. However, this intelligent, intimate little piece is currently providing a rewarding alternative at Theatre Works, quietly nestled across from the parking garage at Overton Square. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Anything Goes at Actors Theatre's THE COTTAGE
by Herbert Paine - Jul 11, 2014

Actor's Theatre's The Cottage is light and enjoyable fare for a hot summer's night. It's silly and predictable stuff, based on a premise that could have as easily come from the mind of Noel Coward but that to be truly great and live up to its hype would have required his writing prowess. (more...)
