On January 28 and 29, 2017, Fertile Ground audiences can see Blind, a staged reading of a new work by Portland playwright, Bonnie Ratner. Award-winning director, Bobby Bermea, is at the helm. The Saturday matinee performance is followed by a post-show conversation facilitated by The Color of Now, and the Sunday evening performance will be ASL interpreted. Girl Scouts of the USA Celebrates 100 Years of Girl Scouts Selling Cookies

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) announced today the start of the 2017 cookie season, which marks the 100th year of the first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts. A century ago, girls started participating in what would evolve into the largest entrepreneurial training program for girls in the world: the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Through the program, girls learn the essential skills they need to become effective leaders, manage finances, gain self-sufficiency, and develop confidence in handling money. PGA Arts Center to Present Live Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens in 2017

Palm Beach Gardens will add live theatre to its ever-growing cultural landscape when the PGA Arts Center opens its doors in late January.  Veteran producers Philip Roger Roy and Dana Matthow have taken a multi-year lease on the PGA Cinemas, located at 4076 PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens, and are in the process of converting two of the building's six auditoria to accommodate live productions. The two theatres will seat 260 and 280 patrons respectively.  They plan to adapt a third space - which will seat approximately 160, and be available for rentals - within the next year. (more...)

BWW Review: Cute but Uninspired FINDING NEVERLAND at Paramount

Lord, save us from pop songwriters who think they can write musical theater. Sure, some transition successfully but this would not be the case for Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy who have given us the completely unmemorable "Finding Neverland", currently playing at the Paramount Theatre. And if the lackluster music weren't enough, the show is also weighed down by a book from James Graham and direction from Diane Paulus who it seems had no idea what story they wanted to tell as there seemed to be two distinct shows happening and neither of them were very good. WaterTower Theatre today announced details for the third annual WOMEN IN THEATRE panel discussion.  The event is presented under the auspices of Women of WaterTower Theatre (WOW!) and it is chaired by Jennifer Martinez.  This is the third panel in the series, having already explored the unique perspective of prominent female directors and actors, 2017 will feature The Designers, and it will be held on Monday, February 6, 2017 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm (with a post-lecture reception in the lobby with the artists). The event will be held in the Canterbury Family Main Stage at the Addison Theatre Centre.  The lecture will be moderated by Dallas arts journalist Lauren Smart, and features Leann Burns, Clare Floyd DeVries, Sylvia Fuhrken Marrs, and Frida Espinosa-Muller. It is rare when a show like THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME goes on the road. While audiences across the U.S. may be used to seeing the latest Broadway musicals in their local theaters, they don't always have the chance to catch Tony winning plays unless they take a trip to New York. So when THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME rolls into Hartford, audiences at the Bushnell will have the unique opportunity to meet Christopher Boone, a beautifully complex 15 year-old English boy who sets out on a journey to solve a mystery, and discovers that where one mystery exists, others are just around the corner. Taking the stage as Christopher is recent Julliard graduate, Adam Langdon. I had the pleasure of speaking with Adam and learning about his experience playing this "exceptionally intelligent boy" and his unique connection to the role. (more...)

BWW Review: FINDING NEVERLAND Soars Into the Buell Theatre

Finding Neverland is based off the Oscar winning film starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. It tells the story of J.M. Barrie (Kevin Kern), a playwright who is seeking inspiration to write his next play. The problem, there are no ideas flowing. One day, in a park in London, Barrie sees four boys playing and they spark his interest. He has forgotten to use his imagination to write. The boys introduce Barrie to their mother Sylvia (Christine Dwyer), and as Barrie's marriage starts to fall to pieces, he grows romantic feelings for Sylvia. All the while, Barrie gets the inspiration to write his next big hit - "Peter Pan." (more...)
