by BWW News Desk - Sep 3, 2015

Joel Paley has earned accolades for over two decades with RUTHLESS! The Musical, for which he wrote the award-winning book and lyrics. He also directed the original 1992 production at the Player's Theatre, as well as in L.A., South Beach, the record-breaking concert event starring Bernadette Peters, and the current smash Off-Broadway production at St. Luke's Theatre. If that isn't enough, Paley is also starring in the show this week as the 8-year-old murderous, uber-talented Tina Denmark. The role is normally played by Tori Murray who is taking a brief, well-deserved vacation as she prepares to enter sixth grade next week. She's set to return to the role tomorrow, and Joel Paley will offer audiences his showstopping take on the role one more time tonight at 7 PM. When asked why the 59-year-old Paley was interested in stepping into this seemingly impossible assignment, he merely shrugged and explained, 'The show must go on.' Scroll down for photos! (more...)

'Pro99' Actors' Equity Members Send Open Letter to AEA President'Pro99' Actors' Equity Members Send Open Letter to AEA President
by BWW News Desk - Aug 27, 2015

Members of the "Pro99" movement of Actors' Equity Association have issued an open letter to AEA's newly elected president, Kate Shindle, in response to her victory and to her inaugural address as president of the national union for actors and stage managers. The open letter is signed by over 400 Equity members (listed below), including such notable names as Ed Asner, Francis Fisher, Sally Kirkland and Alfred Molina. The "Pro99" movement formed in late 2014 in opposition to AEA's rollout of a new plan that will effectively force "intimate theaters" in Los Angeles to pay Equity actors minimum wage, go "non-union" or even close - despite an overwhelming vote against the plan by 66% of the Los Angeles membership on an advisory referendum. "Pro99" members around the nation, who take their name from the current AEA "99 Seat Plan" that allows members to volunteer in smaller venues, oppose AEA's new promulgated plan. They are requesting that Equity leadership put a moratorium on the plan until local members' voices can be heard, and that the union work with its members to develop an alternative plan that will more realistically address the needs of the Los Angeles theater community. BWW Review: Clandestine's CARRIE THE MUSICAL is Ambitious DisappointmentBWW Review: Clandestine's CARRIE THE MUSICAL is Ambitious Disappointment
by Matt Tamanini - Aug 27, 2015

There is something noble about earnestly attempting to do good, despite the overwhelming evidence that what you are embarking upon is almost certainly doomed to disappoint. Not only is that sentiment at the center of CARRIE THE MUSICAL, which Clandestine Arts is premiering in Central Florida through August 30th at the ME Theatre, but it also accurately describes the undertaking of performing this infamous piece of musical theatre history. Like Carrie's senior prom, unless everything goes unbelievably perfectly, the musical is likely going to be a substantial let-down. While Clandestine has put together an impressively talented group of young performers, especially in the show's four leads, the uneven and sloppy production undermines whatever power the piece might otherwise have had. BWW Review: Mad Cow's TRIBES is Beautiful Examination of Love, Family, CommunicationBWW Review: Mad Cow's TRIBES is Beautiful Examination of Love, Family, Communication
by Matt Tamanini - Aug 26, 2015

Since I left the Mad Cow Theatre after seeing the Sunday matinee of their newest show, TRIBES by Nina Raine, I haven't been able to stop thinking about the implications stirred up by the highly dysfunctional family at the center of this rich, thickly plotted drama. I have become slightly weary of new plays trading on the 'highly dysfunctional family' trope in recent years, as most are flawed attempts to capitalize on the success of AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, but the insight with which Raine draws her characters, and the difficulties that they face, is uniquely specific, and all together powerful. The plot of this beautifully realized production analyzes the nature of family, of belonging, and the differences between communicating and connecting. (more...)
