Best described as Golden Girls meets The Odd Couple, Ripcord is an uproarious new comedy by noted playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Ripcord takes us to the Bristol Place Assisted Living Facility where foul-tempered Abby has just learned that she has to share her Sunny top-floor room with newcomer Marilyn. Loathe to share her space, Abby challenges Marilyn to a seemingly harmless bet where the loser abandons the Sunny top-floor room. The events that follow take the women on a ridiculous journey that reveals not only the tenacity of these worthy opponents but also some secrets they would rather remain hidden. Ripcord brings us the fight of the century, and after all, wouldn't they know? Ogunquit Playhouse and Rotary International Team Up

The venerable Ogunquit Playhouse, which is celebrating its 85th Anniversary season is once again joining forces with Rotary International to continue in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide by 2018. The annual Rotary Night is scheduled for Thursday, June 1, for the evening performance of Mamma Mia! Joining the fight is as easy as buying a ticket to the international hit show! A portion of every ticket purchased for that evening's performance will be donated to Rotary International. The Ogunquit Playhouse has contributed over $10,000 towards this cause through Rotary Night ticket proceeds over the past six years. (more...)

Seu Jorge Adds September Dates to THE LIFE AQUATIC - A TRIBUTE TO DAVID BOWIE Tour

Though Seu Jorge is one of Brazil's most celebrated singers and actors, he is perhaps best known here in the U.S. for his role in Wes Anderson's 2004 film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, in which Jorge reinterpreted a number of David Bowie's biggest hits. The songs, performed in Portuguese and featuring Jorge solo on acoustic guitar, became something entirely unique. So much so that Bowie himself was moved to say, 'Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.' (more...)

Adventure Stage Chicago Season 14 Features AKEELAH AND THE BEE

???????Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC), the participatory arts program of Northwestern Settlement (the Settlement), announces its 14th season of programming for young audiences, exploring the theme of "Literacy" as the company applies its mission of telling heroic stories to the Settlement objective of disrupting generational poverty. ASC's "Literacy" season features the stage adaptation of Akeelah and the Bee; a commissioned work by Lucas Baisch, based on the Guatemalan myths of Popol Vuh and created in collaboration with community partners; and an original piece devised by ASC's Trailblazers youth mentorship program.  All performances take place at Northwestern Settlement's Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble St. Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for youth aged 14 years and younger. Group tickets are $10 for ten or more guests. Student matinee tickets are $7 for CPS and $8 for non-CPS groups. Houston Grand Opera (HGO) marks the sixth decade of making the art of opera accessible to all audiences at Miller Outdoor Theatre with two free, fully staged performances of Donizetti's The Elixir of Love on May 19 and 20, starting at 8 p.m. A magic elixir gives a love-struck young man the extra dose of confidence he needs to thwart a rival and win the woman of his dreams, but the elixir creates just as many problems as it solves. The bright, Sunny production is set on the Amalfi Coast in the 1950s-complete with Vespas and a hot air balloon.
