by Pat Cerasaro - Jun 24, 2015

The hottest news of the week as far as plays for the new season are concerned is the surprise announcement that the mainstage adaptation of Stephen King's iconic best-selling novel and its subsequent Academy Award-winning feature film adaptation, MISERY, would be coming to Broadway with Hollywood headliner Bruce Willis and a new leading lady in place of the previously announced Elizabeth Marvel - no less than three-time Emmy Award-winning stage and screen notable Laurie Metcalf. Of course, Metcalf will be essaying the operatically dramatic role of the ultimate all-time uber fan Annie Wilkes in the tale of a writer rescued from a horrific car accident by his number one fan only to be trapped and tortured at her secluded cabin in the deep backwoods of Maine. Kathy Bates memorably took home a Best Actress Oscar for her turn in the 1990 film and acclaimed screenwriter William Goldman told me himself in our InDepth InterView about the new stage version of the story that he originally wrote the role in the film explicitly for Bates, as revealed in our exclusive 2012 conversation here. Surely, now is the ideal time to consider some spectacular dramatic actresses who just might be the right replacements should the run of the play extend beyond Metcalf's involvement in the production - and Willis's, too, for that matter. SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Thoughtful Wishes For CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURESOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Thoughtful Wishes For CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURE
by Pat Cerasaro - Jun 17, 2015

Last night, acclaimed director Todd Graff unexpectedly announced plans to film a follow-up to 2003 cult favorite theatre-themed movie musical CAMP titled CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURE set to feature fellow Tony Award-winning icons Patti LuPone and Donna Murphy, among others, inspiring Broadway babies to excitedly anticipate the many musical selections that could potentially be presented as part of the project. Of course, the original film famously featured a young Anna Kendrick memorably belting out the COMPANY 11 o'clocker 'The Ladies Who Lunch' in addiiton to an unforgettable recreation of the original Michael Bennett-staged mini masterpiece from PROMISES, PROMISES, 'Turkey Lurkey Time' - plus some standout original tunes by the likes of Michael Gore and Lynn Ahrens, too - not to mention Stephen Sondheim himself appearing onscreen in a cameo role. Now, Graff himself promises at least one showstopper to match the ones in the first film, relaying, 'We're going to introduce some fabulous new additions, like Donna Murphy, Patti LuPone and a bevy of other reigning Broadway divas performing a demented version of 'Steppin' To The Bad Side' from DREAMGIRLS to be staged by the one and only Jerry Mitchell.' So, now, let's speculate on some must-see moments we would relish seeing onscreen in the sequel. (more...)

What is the value of an education? Does consumerism closet society's need to connect with art and literature, a "something more" to be experienced in the world than merely a career? Stage Door Theatre Company at Third Avenue Playhouse revisits these questions in Educating Rita, a 1983 play written by Willy Russell. 'It Was a Dark and Stormy Night on Broadway...' Readers Share Audience Horror Stories!'It Was a Dark and Stormy Night on Broadway...' Readers Share Audience Horror Stories!
by BWW News Desk - Aug 23, 2015

Whatever happened to theatre etiquette? It's a question that many theatre-goers have been asking themselves in recent months, as stories of carelessness, rudeness, and just plain craziness have made their way to the internet. For years now, cell phones have been a culprit of many mid-show disturbances, and it seems that the trend isn't fading away anytime soon. Earlier this spring, HAMILTON's Lin-Manuel Miranda banned Madonna from coming backstage after she spent most of of the show on her phone. This summer, a patron stormed HAND TO GOD's stage on Broadway in search of an outlet to charge his phone, while a week later, the legendary Patti LuPone snatched a theatre-goer's phone mid-performance of SHOWS FOR DAYS Off-Broadway. The recklessness continues. Earlier this week during a performance of THE FIX at D.C.'s Signature Theatre, a woman stormed the stage yet again... this time in search of a restroom. She reportedly used the backstage bathroom before being promptly escorted to the lobby by house staff. With this kind of audience misbehavior seemingly taking over the world, we thought it fitting to ask our readers about some of their own Audience Horror Stories. Check out the list below and brace yourself...it's about to get scary. (more...)
