BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE to Run 5/15-6/21 at Stage Door TheatreBELL, BOOK AND CANDLE to Run 5/15-6/21 at Stage Door Theatre
by Carol Kassie - May 5, 2015

Gillian Holroyd is a witch.  She can cast spells and perform feats of magic, but she can't fall in love.  And when she casts a spell over her attractive neighbor - partly to keep him away from an old rival, and partly because she is attracted to him - this slight 'imperfection' leads to a number of unintended and somewhat tricky situations.  Although when John Van Druten's supernatural hit, Bell, Book and Candle debuted on Broadway in 1951 it was billed as, and thought of as a light comedy, it delivers a message that is still relevant today.  The play touches on the importance of appearances, on the dynamics of a close circle of friends, on pretending and secrets, and on passing as something one is not.  Bell, Book and Candle will open at Stage Door Theatre on May 15th, and run through June 21st. BWW Review: Legendary Broadway Musical CATS Enchants Audiences at the Norris TheatreBWW Review: Legendary Broadway Musical CATS Enchants Audiences at the Norris Theatre
by Shari Barrett - May 4, 2015

In the history of musical theater, there is little question of the cultural significance of "CATS." It was the first branded spectacle musical and its biggest song "Memory" became an instant standard. All the big musicals that have come along since owe a debt of gratitude to the special effects and overall spectacle "CATS" allowed the world to experience for the first time onstage. Due to the size of the production and the incredible cast requirement for dozens of triple-threat actors and actresses who can handle the operatic score and dancing from tap to jazz to ballet, "CATS" is a treat to behold for audiences of all ages whenever a production comes to town. For me, Anthony Newley is Matthew Mugg. It wouldn't be until 2015 that I discovered that Anthony Newley is responsible for some of my favorite music, and that he wrote a ton of material with Leslie Bricusse. BWW Reviews: And BEST OF BROADWAY 2 Begat BEST OF BROADWAY 3BWW Reviews: And BEST OF BROADWAY 2 Begat BEST OF BROADWAY 3
by Joseph Baker - Apr 24, 2015

Once again, it's Spring; and once again, Stage Door Productions has brought professionals and nonprofessionals together to share their love of musical theatre and their talents in what is, by now, an annual event: THE BEST OF BROADWAY 3, closing this weekend at the KROC Center, is Director Brandon Kelly's latest 'greatest hits' collection to entertain Memphis' audiences. This is the second year I have attended this event, and even though a review at this point probably won't make much difference in bolstering attendance, BEST doesn't really need it. The audience here is 'a given' (and a vocal 'given' at that) - a multigenerational aggregation of relatives and friends, lovers of musicals, and people who simply want to be entertained; and in that latter respect, THE BEST OF BROADWAY 3 does not disappoint. BWW Reviews: Hurricane Promotions Presents THE MIDTOWN MENBWW Reviews: Hurricane Promotions Presents THE MIDTOWN MEN
by Heidi Scheuermann - Apr 1, 2015

There have been a few times in my life where I attended an event, be it a theatre production or a concert, and I woke up the next morning still reeling from the excitement with a cheesy smile plastered across my face. The first time I remember that happening was when my dad took me and my younger sister to see Hanson (yes, the Mmmbop guys) on their Middle of Nowhere Tour. I also remember feeling like that after I saw NEWSIES for the first time on Broadway. Experiencing THE MIDTOWN MEN at the Mahalia Jackson Theater was another one of those events. Not only are these guys some of the sweetest, most genuine humans I've ever met - we're talking funfetti cupcake status, here - they have a passion for entertaining that is unmatched. (more...)
