by David Clarke - Sep 29, 2014

Stephen Edwards' TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES, a musical adaption of Thomas Hardy's 1891 novel, is a musical that never found its proper footing. Prior to opening on the West End, the UK tour was met with positive reviews, but poor critical reception at London's Savoy Theatre saw the musical shutter faster than anyone anticipated. Yet, TESS still has life thanks to TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES (Original Cast Recording). (more...)

by Elizabeth Peterson-Vita - Oct 21, 2014

A startling and compelling play about journeys, literal and metaphorical, THE OTHER PLACE by Sharr White, is currently running at Trustus' Stage Door Theatre through November 1. This intelligent production, insightfully directed by Jim O'Connor, yields a mixture of mystery, pathos, and dark humor in its exploration of serious illness as manifested by behavioral aberrations. In order to preserve the revelatory nature of the work, no spoiler alert will be offered here, but suffice it to say that there are many layers, some rooted in biology, others in experience, that are unpeeled to yield answers and poignant resolution. Canadian Opera Company Announces Season ScheduleCanadian Opera Company Announces Season Schedule
by BWW News Desk - Oct 14, 2014

The Canadian Opera Company's 2014/2015 season gets off to a rollicking start with a hilarious new production of Verdi's Falstaff, from acclaimed Canadian director Robert Carsen. Inspired by the beloved Shakespearean character and the resulting folly of his ill-advised seduction attempts, Carsen's production of Falstaff sets the action in a lovingly rendered 1950s England. The all-Canadian cast stars world renowned bass-baritone Gerald Finley, returning to the COC mainstage after more than 20 years, in a highly anticipated role debut as the title character. Joining Finley is baritone Russell Braun as Ford, Falstaff's nemesis; soprano Lyne Fortinas Alice Ford, mezzo-soprano Lauren Segal as Meg Page and contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Mistress Quickly, the women determined to teach Falstaff a lesson; soprano Simone Osborne as the lovesick Nannetta; and tenor Frédéric Antoun as Nannetta's amorous suitor Fenton. COC Music Director Johannes Debus guides the COC Orchestra and Chorus through the lyricism and artistry of Verdi's score that captures all the joy, wisdom and profound humanity of Shakespeare's comic invention. Worzel Gummidge was a very successful television series in the late 1970's based on Barbara Euphan Todd's children's novel. Following this, a stage adaptation was created - featuring original TV cast members Jon Pertwee, Una Stubbs and Geoffrey Bayldon - at Birmingham Repertory Theatre over the Christmas period in 1980 and was a resounding hit. It then went on to play at the Cambridge Theatre in London's West End the following festive season, extending until February 1982. BWW Interview: Victoria Clark Returns to Her PIAZZA Past at Pace University, Preps for GIGI at the Kennedy Center and More!BWW Interview: Victoria Clark Returns to Her PIAZZA Past at Pace University, Preps for GIGI at the Kennedy Center and More!
by Nicole Rosky - Nov 1, 2014

Before Victoria Clark returns to Broadway next season as 'Mamita Alvarez' in Gigi, she heads back to school as the artist in residence at Pace University. Clark directs The Light in the Piazza, the show for which she picked up a Tony Award in 2005, running through November 8 at the Loretto Theatre at The Sheen Center. The Light in the Piazza, by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas, is based on the novella of the same name by Elizabeth Spencer. Taking place in Italy in the late summer of 1953, it is the story of an American woman Margaret Johnson, who travels to Florence with her daughter Clara, who falls in love with a young Florentine man. As details emerge about Clara's past, their trip turns out to be very much a romantic and psychological journey as Margaret must decide what is best for her daughter, her family, and for herself. The winner of six Tony Awards in 2005, The Light in the Piazza has become one of the great classics of the American Musical Theater, with its lush score and cliff-hanger story. Clark took the time out of her busy schedule to update BroadwayWorld on her adventures in directing, revisiting PIAZZA, preparing for GIGI and more. Check out the full interview below! (more...)
