BWW Review: Shake It to the Sound of HAIRSPRAY at Cape Rep
by Kristen Morale - Aug 7, 2016

With a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman and now directed by Scott Ripley, Cape Rep's production of Hairspray: The Broadway Musical has already imaginably caused quite the stir since its opening on Wednesday. This musical has a little bit of everything that creates a whole lot of joy that will have audiences dancing on their feet even after the show has ended. From the diverse styles (and sheer amount) of dance to an eclectic bunch of characters and costumes that would make any other production of this musical turn green with envy, to the unbelievable talent of the cast and crew and the show's happy ending such a controversial topic as race segregation can bring forth, others aside from myself will assuredly be find themselves wearing a constant smile on their faces throughout. BWW Review: New Line Theatre's Superb TELL ME ON A SUNDAY
by Chris Gibson - Aug 26, 2016

TELL ME ON A SUNDAY has an interesting history, being conceived by Tim Rice as a TV series initially. Frequent collaborator and composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, later took the project to lyricist Don Black, and a lovely one act musical resulted. Though changes have occurred over the years with how it's been utilized (acting as the first part of the show Song and Dance), and with song choices that have come and gone, this production by New Line Theatre is probably the closest you'll find to its original vision. Sparked by some of Webber's most gorgeous material (it occasionally reminds me of vintage Burt Bacharach at times, and I mean that in the best possible way), and laced with Black's amusing and often biting lyrical content, it radiates perfection under Mike Dowdy-Windsor's direction, and in the process, provides actress Sarah Porter with an excellent vehicle to showcase her exceptional talents. Mel Brooks Is Back In The BLAZING SADDLES; Screening And Conversation at Radio City Music Hall

At the end of Mel Brooks' Broadway musical adaptation of his film classic 'Young Frankenstein,' there's the quick lyrical suggestion that a Song and Dance version of his 1974 western spoof 'Blazing Saddles' is on the way. BWW Review Storytellers, Musicmakers, Dreamers: McCourt's THE IRISH Captivates in Portland
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Aug 20, 2016

'We are the storytellers; we are the musicmakers; we are the dreamers of dreams.' With these words the cast of Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way brings to a close a spellbinding evening of story and song that has the audience clapping, foot-tapping, weeping, and laughing in one of the most vibrant theatrical experiences in recent memory. The co-production of Pulitzer Prize winning author Frank McCourt's 1997 play with music marks a stunningly successful collaboration between Maine State Music Theatre and Portland Stage and promises to be a major hit for its brief four-week engagement. McCourt's one-hundred-minute drama tells the story of several centuries of the Irish experience on both sides of the Atlantic. No mere history lesson, however, as much knowledge as the play does impart, rather The Irish is a poetic, saucy, irreverent, and exquisitely beautiful tapestry of music, language, narrative, peopled with colorful characters and showcased in compelling Song and Dance. BWW Review: SINGING IN THE RAIN at Stolen Shakespheare Guild
by Kyle Christopher West - Aug 20, 2016

In 64 years since the famous film came out, the stage version of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN has never quite succeeded on The Great White Way, despite several attempts (a recent endeavor starring Derek Hough was postponed just last month). Nonetheless, Stolen Shakespeare Guild continues their tenth season with this well-known title. Although the musical's nostalgia does seem to charm audiences with its memorable score, ultimately, the magic and glamour of the film disappear in front of a live audience. (more...)

by Allison Rambler - Aug 10, 2016

As the opening night of The Belmont Theater's 'Side Show' quickly approaches, the activity in the black box studio has increased ten-fold. The set is becoming more elaborate, the swell of music from the orchestra now fills the air, and the costumes are coming together piece by piece. Tech week has begun, and it can both an exciting and somewhat stressful time for any production. As an actor, it can sometimes be difficult to lose sight of your character and even the meaning behind the show itself among the bustle and flurry of tech week. That is why I felt that the time had come to interview some of the actors in our show, in order to provide a bit of insight into their characters and to explain from their perspective the importance of a musical such as 'Side Show.'
