BWW Reviews: MARY POPPINS at BDT StageBWW Reviews: MARY POPPINS at BDT Stage
by colin roybal - Jul 3, 2015

'Mary Poppins' is a film classic that children of all ages have enjoyed for many years. It is a lighthearted, whimsical tale of a pair of unruly children who are taught the value of order, morality, and family love by a magical nanny who floats into their lives by way of a gust of wind. I was so enamored of Mary Poppins' magic, that as a child I was convinced that singing and snapping my fingers would magically make my chores complete. Alas, things are always sweeter and brighter in Disney films. Such is the case for the stage production of Mary Poppins, which strays from the Julie Andrews version of the tale that we all grew up with from the movie. Instead, some of the darker elements from the P.L. Travers books that Mary Poppins was torn from are included in the musical, and add just the right amount of bitter to the sweetness. (more...)

Reflections: What SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Lacks in Star Power, It Makes Up for In Extended Scenes, Live SpectacleReflections: What SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Lacks in Star Power, It Makes Up for In Extended Scenes, Live Spectacle
by Oliver Oliveros - Jul 28, 2015

When compared to 'Sunset Boulevard,' (orig. film: 1950; West End premiere: 1993), which follows the same classic film-to-stage pedigree as 'Singin' In the Rain' (orig. film: 1952; West End premiere: 1983) and tackles the same dilemma of making the transition from silent films to talkies in the 1920s--albeit of psychological melodrama in genre compared to the latter's rollicking parody--'Sunset Boulevard' had big stars of stage and screen who headlined West End and Broadway, i.e. Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, and Elaine Paige who played the faded silent movie star Norma Desmond. Whereas 'Singin' In the Rain' did not delve into such stunt casting from the onset--unless you consider Tommy Steele, who originated the role of Don Lockwood in the West End, as big as Elvis Presley or Gene Kelly, the silver screen's original Lockwood. On Sunday July 12 the Pink Lady Jackie Goldberg and her producer partners Barbara Van Orden and Amanda Blake Secola presented their unique Senior Star Search competition for the very first year 2015 to a sold out crowd at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Barnsdall Park, Hollywood. It was such a resounding success, a real love affair with the public, that hopefully the event will be an annual occurrence. Seniors perform exceedingly well, as well as anyone at any age. Age has nothing to do with talent and drive, a fact which was assuredly proved during the course of this show. All contestants ranged in age from 55 and up with the oldest contestant Nick Pietroforte, age 86. Accompanist for the program was maestro par excellence Ron Snyder. (more...)

To those newer generation theatre and movie fans who do not remember 1952's blockbuster hit film Singin' in the Rain, directors Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly, screenwriters Betty Comden and Adolph Green and costars Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds all contributed to making it the smash that it was... and still is. The zany lightweight hit transferred to the stage in the early 80s and showed the craziness that may have happened when the big movie studios were transitioning from silents to talkies in the late 20s. Now in a classy revival at Musical Theatre West (MTW) in Long Beach, it's all brought back to exuberantly colorful life by skilled director Jon Engstrom and a delicious company of triple threats through July 26 only. While it seems that some musicals are constantly produced and have been seen by every theatergoer alive, others seem more elusive. For example, there's no good explanation for why so many people have mentioned recently that they've never seen the musical Gypsy. 'Oh, I know the songs,' they all say. Immediately followed by, 'But I've never seen the actual show.' If you are among that number, Ocean State Theatre Company has just what you need, a nearly perfect production of this classic and beloved musical. And if you are not one of those people, and you have seen the show before, you should definitely take this opportunity to see it again. (more...)
