Roundabout reunites writer Joshua Harmon (Bad Jews, Significant Other) and director Daniel Aukin (Bad Jews) for Skintight, a scorching examintion of beauty, youth and sex. Reeling from her ex-husband’s engagement to a much younger woman, Jodi Isaac turns to her famous fashion-designer dad for support. Instead, she finds him wrapped up in his West Village townhouse with Trey. Who’s 20. And not necessarily gay. But probably an adult film star. At least, according to Jodi’s son. Who’s also 20. And definitely gay. Skintight assays the nature of love, the power of attraction, and the ways in which a superficial culture persists in teaching its children that all that matters is what’s on the inside.

BWW Reviews: Houston Ballet's CLEAR and MADAME BUTTERFLY- Sumptuous, Emotional and Beautiful
by David Clarke - Sep 9, 2012

The Houston Ballet is synonymous with fantastic and sumptuous performances. Each of their dancers, from Principals to Apprentices, is a supremely talented artist at the top of their class in professional skill. Currently, Houston Ballet is featuring their male dancers in CLEAR, which was created for American Ballet Theatre in New York City in 2001, and their ability to move audiences through gorgeous storytelling in MADAME BUTTERFLY, which has its world premiere on February 24, 1995 by The Australian Ballet and its Houston premiere on September 19, 2002. These pieces are distinctly different from each other; yet, Stanton Welch's choreography is sure to leave audiences breathless and spellbound in both productions. (more...)

BWW Reviews: SPAMALOT Shines In Brookings
by Ellie Livingston - Oct 28, 2014

I had the chance to catch SDSU's production of Spamalot on Saturday night Oct. 18th before it closed on Sunday the 19th. The first thing you need to know about this show is that is based on the 1975 movie Monty Python and The Search For the Holy Grail. Monty Python is a British comedy troupe known for its specific form of humor. Monty Python is referenced at just about every level of pop culture, as I am writing this my toddler is watching Sesame Street and a silly puppet is yelling, "Bring out your N!" which is a reference to, "Bring out yer dead!" from none other than Monty Python. Monty Python has a cult like following, to know Monty Python is to love Monty Python in most cases. In order to pull off the musical the cast had a responsibility to not only be familiar with Monty Python but to study it, in detail. This production of Spamalot did not disappoint. It was a wonderful night of theatre. It gave the audience the chance to sit back for two hours and be totally entertained. (more...)

BWW Review: DETROIT '67 a Lot Like Baltimore '15
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Apr 18, 2016

Morisseau's explanation of the Detroit riots makes a lot of sense, and resonates with my understanding of what happened last year in Baltimore. Morisseau's thesis is that the black citizens of Detroit were not crazy, just reacting to an ongoing culture of police abuse, and that abusive police and military responses were to blame for most of what went wrong once the spark of protest had been struck by the raid of an unlicensed after-hours drinking club known as a 'blind pig.'
