Re-Imagined Musical

Side Show

November 5 - December 15

Music by Henry Krieger

Book and Lyrics by Bill Russell

Directed by Bill Condon

Meant to be Together

Based on the true story of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton who became stars during the Depression, Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love. The original 1997 Broadway production of Side Show was directed by Robert Longbottom and received four Tony® nominations, including a shared nomination for co-stars Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner, the only time in Tony history where two people were co-nominated for the Best Actress Award.

BWW Feature: Broadway Knows how to Celebrate Birthdays; 10 Birthday Showtunes!BWW Feature: Broadway Knows how to Celebrate Birthdays; 10 Birthday Showtunes!
by Matt Tamanini - Jun 29, 2015

My birthday this year took on extra significance, as the Supreme Court of the United States selected that day to rule that all people had an equal and unalienable right to marry whomever they wanted, regardless of gender. While normally a day to indulge in extreme selfishness, I am quite pleased to cede the importance of June 26th from a celebration of my birth to that of love and compassion for all people. Hopefully Derek Jeter, Ariana Grande, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris O'Donnell are all on board as well. Despite long considering myself a LGBTQ ally, I am now going to turn this feature back to being about my birthday (because I already had the songs chosen before SCOTUS ruled). So, this month, I am taking over sole duties that I normally share with Jeff Walker, and composing a list of 10 showtunes all about births and birthdays. Feel free to chime in on Twitter (@BWWMatt) or in the comments below with any others you would like to add to the list. (more...)

BWW Reviews: IMPOSSIBLE! A HAPPENSTANCE CIRCUS Impossibly InventiveBWW Reviews: IMPOSSIBLE! A HAPPENSTANCE CIRCUS Impossibly Inventive
by Pamela Roberts - Jul 2, 2015

Happenstance Theater's IMPOSSIBLE! is impossibly inventive, whimsical, and tender. The tribute to classic Depression-era circus life uses period music, a clever costume choice or the arch of an eyebrow to convey far more than mere words are able. IMPOSSIBLE! is a family-friendly production that hits just the right tone - funny not ridiculous, kindhearted not cloying, smart not pretentious. The original piece of physical theater was devised by the Happenstance ensemble. We venture both under the big top and behind the scenes to witness the camaraderie, loneliness, frustrations and foibles of the band of performers. (more...)

by Nicole Rosky - Aug 2, 2015

Megan McGinnis is heading back to the New York stage, starring alongside Paul Alexander Nolan in John Caird and Paul Gordon's musical adaptation of DADDY LONG LEGS. Based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster, DADDY LONG LEGS tells the extraordinary tale of Jerusha Abbott (McGinnis), the oldest orphan in the John Grier Home. One day, a rich, anonymous benefactor (Nolan) decides to send her to college, but she must write him a letter once a month. Unaware of his identity, she invents a nickname for him: Daddy Long Legs. Through her brilliant and witty letters, Jerusha shares her experiences of college while discovering her own identity and reveling in the wonders of literature, adventure and love. But one key fact eludes her - who is Daddy Long Legs? McGinnis returns to the role after leading the premiere at the Rubicon Theatre Company in 2009, and subsequent productions around the country. She received the 2010 Los Angeles Ovation Award, an Indy Award (West Coast) and the Acclaim Award (Cincinnati), for her role in the musical.
