BWW Review: OYE MI CANTO a Thrilling Show for GMCLA
by Don Grigware - Jun 29, 2016

GMCLA never disappoints. Their summer concert Oye Mi Canto, which took place at the Alex Theatre Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26 featured the small Gay Men's Chorus of Cuba Mano a Mano whose singing skill and artistry blew the roof off the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Combined with GMCLA, the Latin sounds were rhythmic to the point of heart-pounding and oh so moving in every way. This is the first time the five men chorus have performed outside of Cuba on tour, and their very presence with GMCLA shows the mission of Gay Men's Choruses everywhere to come together in unity to champion the causes of gay men worldwide, especially in light of the horrific Orlando, Florida massacre two weeks ago. It's hard to beat Latino rhythms. They pull you in and make you move and groove to the (more...)

BWW Review: AVENUE Q Provides Humor, Acceptance, Community in Orlando's Difficult Days
by Matt Tamanini - Jun 14, 2016

It seems unimaginable that a single work of art can both hysterically mock and lovingly embrace some of our fondest childhood memories. However, as the 'AVENUE Q Theme Song' transitions into the first official song of the musical (one of modern musical theatre's most effective opening numbers) it becomes clear that this show is unlike anything that came before it, and that traditional musical theatre conventions, and easily offended sensibilities, should be thrown out the window. After Orlando Shootings, Author Emilyann Girdner Cancels Book Signing at Altamonte Springs Mall
by BWW News Desk - Jun 13, 2016

Emilyann Girdner, author of young adult fantasy book, The Labyrinth Wall, cancelled her signing at Barnes & Noble in Altamonte Springs on June 12th, 2016. This cancellation was in response to the shootings that occurred over the weekend in Orlando, Florida. Though the event was cancelled, the store did stay open until closing hours. Girdner encouraged anyone planning to purchase books at the event, to instead redirect those dollars to donations for the loved ones of victims from weekend tragedies. The author did indicate that the event will be rescheduled for another time to be determined at a later date. (more...)

BWW Review: FELD'S KIDS Execute With Polish and Finally With Glee
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 13, 2016

We all know that Eliot Feld – who might be New York City's most accomplished man in dance – has a love for calisthenics, vernacular twists and grooves, and folklore. But since closing his ballet company in 2003, his work has been primarily with students who cannot understand the dry wit inherent to his choreography. The effect is decidedly discombobulating. One wishes that Mr. Feld would either up the ante in his work – there were no pirouettes or turns, though there was plenty of batterie, which tends to be more difficult – or further develop the artistry of his charges. BWW Review: THE UNAUTHORIZED MUSICAL PARODY OF THE BIG LEBOWSKI - An Incredibly Sung, High Energy, Hysterical Cabaret Event
by Gil Kaan - Jun 13, 2016

A ridiculously talented troupe of singer/comedians totally revel and entertain in THE UNAUTHORIZED MUSICAL PARODY OF THE BIG LEBOWSKI. Staged, not only on the mainstage, but in various nooks and on available bar stools of the Rockwell; director Tye Blue smoothly whips his energy-infectious cast through the non-stop, laugh-a-minute spoof, covering unrelated popular songs that cleverly advance the loose plot.   (more...)

BWW Review: MARY POPPINS takes flight at Midtown Arts Center
by Felicia Tassone - Jul 8, 2016

As many of you might know, it is always a 'Jolly Holiday' with Mary. Poppins that is. This Practically Perfect Nanny first burst on the scene in 1934, in the children's books written by P.L. Travers. In 1964, the beloved Disney movie starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke was released. This is where most of us fell in love with Mary Poppins. Mary was once again transformed in 2004, when she was brought to life on stage in London's West End. While not especially faithful to the movie, the show morphs into a crafty Broadway musical. As with many Disney adaptations, new songs have been added, and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the iconic Sherman Brothers tunes and those penned by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. They fit flawlessly, and the up-tempo 'Anything Can Happen' is as good as anything from the film. (more...)

BWW Review: Rivertown's HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING Succeeds... Without Really Trying!
by Heidi Scheuermann - Jul 7, 2016

BWW Review: Fresh-Faced Fitness - MAXINUTRITION CYCLONE
by Michael Goodacre - Jul 5, 2016

This will be my first ever product review, and to be honest I don't think it will be a regular feature as I tend to be relatively set in my ways regarding the products I buy. If anyone reading this happens to want to send me some samples though, don't let my opening put you off though! I've been aware of MaxiMuscle, now MaxiNutrition, since before I started training, so a big shout out goes to their marketing team (or marketing budget). However, their prices have always been a bit offputting, at around ÂŁ30 per kilo for any of their protein products. (more...)

BWW Review: Holy Ogre! SHREK THE MUSICAL Is A Blast!
by Herbert Paine - Jul 20, 2016

Arizona Broadway Theatre's staging of SHREK THE MUSICAL exceeds expectations. Mace Archer has gone beyond the norm, directing something more than a lively and exhilarating show. He's fashioned a distinctive and incredibly intimate and engaging experience that speaks with authenticity to audience members young and older. Archer is aided and abetted in this theatrical coup by a gangbuster cast, featuring the awesome foursome of Jason Simon as the 'big stupid ugly ogre,' Liz Fallon as Fiona, Deonte Warren as Donkey, and David Brumfield as Lord Farquaad. BWW Blog: Naomi Melvin - Somebody's Eyes: Life in Double
by Guest Blogger: Naomi Melvin - Jul 20, 2016

Theatre in Toronto is moving and shaking. This city has a consistent flow of productions year-round, but the summer is a particularly exciting time to celebrate home-grown work. On June 27, the 2016 Dora Mavor Moore Awards took place at the Harbourfront Centre. The ceremony recognizes Toronto-based creators in theatre, dance and opera spanning 48 categories. I had the honour of attending the awards on behalf of Randolph Academy and was reminded of how diverse, vibrant and hard-working our theatre community is. Many post-Dora commentators regarded Bruce Dow's outstanding job as host. His undeniable humour did not deter from socially charged commentary on the state of our community's compensation. Bruce also directed the audience's attention to the world stage, advising that artists must continue to unite globally in the wake of political events happening around the world. The breadth of work being created in this city is astounding. Repeatedly, I heard award recipients talk about persistence in this industry. Years and years of creative trial have led to works formally recognized. It is a profession worth its weight in blood, but worth every beautiful drop. I left the awards wanting to see more theatre, learn more about the veterans in the room and take a whole list of people out for coffee.  (more...)
