This production is a perfect example of why I am enamored with Theatre and Art, and why I am proud to be part of this community. The show not only shared a historical event but gifted us with sharing the power of empathy. The love and selflessness the citizens of Gander and Newfoundland had for all of the foreign travelers is astonishing. The locals 'took in' and fed 6,579 stranded passengers, which was half the size of the town's population. (more...)

BWW Interview: Emma Benson of Popular Web Series: THE DREAM TEAM

Shenandoah Conservatory students have been creating a lot of their own art and content, one of the most successful projects is a web series called The Dream Team. Created by two theatre students, the original series tells the story of a class of theatre majors, living out their first year of college at the fictional Betsey Bell Conservatory. Founded in October of 2015, the show has garnered more than 8,000 views on YouTube, over 150 subscribers, and upwards of 300 FaceBook likes. I was lucky enough to connect with the show's co-creator and star Emma Benson, a third year Musical Theatre student at Shenandoah and hear about what's in store for Season 2. (more...)

Kelly Morris Rowan Coming to Winter Park Playhouse in July

Professional vocalist Kelly Morris Rowan will return to The Winter Park Playhouse on July 13 and 14, 2016 to premiere her new cabaret in the theatre's popular Spotlight Cabaret Series - Rowan will  treat cabaret audiences to her solo cabaret, Diary of a New York City Nanny, which will chronicle her comedic adventures as an actor/nanny in the Big Apple  through pop and musical theatre favorites. Christopher Leavy, Playhouse Musical Director, will accompny on the piano. Kelly was last seen at The Winter Park Playhouse last Spring, in the Jerry Herman musical revue Showtune! where she impressed patrons with her amazing vocals and powerful performances. BWW Interiew: Art That Resonates Within: Talking with Gregg Goodbrod

'We do art because of what it does for us - how it transforms us,' actor Gregg Goodbrod states with quiet conviction. 'Being an actor helps me to understand other people and see their lives and my own from a different perspective. That's why doing a play like Ghost becomes a journey that really resonates for me.' Goodbrod is speaking about his emotionally and physically demanding role as Sam Wheat in the new chamber version of the original 1990 movie and 2011 stage musical, which is currently playing at Maine State Music Theatre. He uses an example of the scene in which Sam, now a ghost, watches his beloved Molly sort through his belongs. 'I am really very Method as an actor, so I try to get into it completely and feel the actual feelings. And as I am watching Liz [Shivener] play this scene, it suddenly hits me that all these things are not what are important. If I were go, I know it is the love that I would miss. That's why I am an actor - so I can take these journeys and learn new lessons.' (more...)

Totem Pole Playhouse to Present FOREVER PLAID

Totem Pole Playhouse, Pennsylvania's premiere summer theatre located in Caledonia State Park between Gettysburg and Chambersburg, PA, presents the return of one of the most successful musicals in playhouse's 66-year history, Forever Plaid, running from June 17 through July 3. This all-new production is directed and choreographed by Christine O'Grady, who choreographed Totem Pole's critically-acclaimed production, Shenandoah, last season and audience favorite, Godspell, the previous summer. Ms. O'Grady has cast four current students from the prestigious Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (CCM), Louis Griffin, Derek Kastner, Stavros Koumbaros, and Gabe Wrobel as the 'Four Plaids' - a four-part close harmony singing group in the tradition of the Four Freshman, the Four Lads, the Four Aces, and the Hi-Lo's. The show features over 20 hit songs from the 1950s including such classics as: "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Heart and Soul," "Moments to Remember," "Perfidia," and "Love is a Many Splendored Thing." The show, which is being produced by Theatre A Go-Go, Inc., is sponsored by Edward Jones and Richards Orthopaedic Center. Franklin County Visitors Bureau serves as the sponsor for the 2016 season. BWW Interview: Lyrissa Leininger & Michael Kennedy of THE LITTLE MERMAID at Cabrillo Music Theatre

One important and valuable aspect of Cabrillo Music Theatre's long tenure in Ventura County is its devotion to casting talented young local performers in as many of its productions as it can. Cabrillo's casts are usually laden with a mix of professional Equity lead performers, local and regional talent from Southern California (and sometimes elsewhere), but especially home-grown youngsters. We spoke with two of the latter during a rehearsal session recently, Lyrissa Leininger, 16, and Michael Kennedy, 19, who have already gotten their feet wet (an appropriate pre-requisite for The Little Mermaid!) in a number of Cabrillo productions. STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 8/8/16- SHENANDOAH

Today in 1989, the first Broadway revival of Shenandoah opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre), where it ran for 32 performances. Shenandoah is a musical that was written in 1975 with music by Gary Geld, lyrics by Peter Udell, and a book by Udell, Philip Rose and James Lee Barrett, based on Barrett's original screenplay for the 1965 film Shenandoah. The musical first opened at the Goodspeed Opera House in 1974 and then transferred to Broadway, opening on January 7, 1975. It ran on Broadway for a total of 1,050 performances, closing August 7, 1977. The production was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and won two, one for Best Actor in a Musical (John Cullum) and the other for Best Book of a Musical. (more...)
