As a team, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz (Larry) Hart found Broadway fame while in their twenties. Though their talents as composer and lyricist complimented one another brilliantly, their working methods and personalities couldn't have been more different. Rodgers's strict work ethic and Hart's casual and tragically self-destructive attitude eventually led to the end of their creative partnership which, in turn, resulted in Rodgers's legendary collaborations with Oscar Hammerstein. After seeing Bayou Concert City Musicals' production of their latest revue, My Romance: The Rodgers and Hart Songbook, I was inspired to not only revisit the songs that were performed, but to delve further into the career of one of Broadway's greatest, if somewhat tumultuous partnerships. In just three years since the inception of the BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Awards, the ceremony has evolved into one of the community's most-anticipated events. And this year's festivities, the second one at Joe's Pub, proved to be the most glittering and energetic assemblage to date. In fact, there couldn't have been a more promising start to the annual cabaret awards season, which continues with the Bistro Awards at Gotham Comedy Club on March 4, and culminates with the MAC Awards (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) at BB King's on March 26. The 3rd Annual BWW Awards Show was just the right spark to get this season's prizes off to a veritable fireworks display. (more...)

Orange County, Calif.—Feb. 19, 2015—Enjoy the ever-progressing capabilities of music by “Bach, Beethoven and Bart?k” in the second concert of Pacific Symphony's 2014-15 Café Ludwig chamber series, which explores music written at the early, middle and late periods of a composer's life. Led by charismatic pianist and host Orli Shaham, this year's series features the Symphony's Principal Cellist Timothy Landauer performing three of Beethoven's Cello Sonatas over the course of the season. For this concert, Landauer's cello shines in equal interplay with Shaham's piano during the Cello Sonata No. 3, a work full of serene emotion. The concert opens with Bach's Trio Sonata for Two Flutes and Piano, which features a genius display of counterpoint played by Principal Flutist Benjamin Smolen and flutist Sharon O'Connor. Guest pianist Peter Henderson joins the Symphony musicians for Bart?k's Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion, playing alongside Shaham, Principal Timpanist Todd Miller and Principal Percussionist Robert Slack. Bartók's piece is an aural exploration of his fascination with the piano as a percussion instrument. (more...)

Andy Warhol: Portraits opens at Phoenix Art Museum on March 4, 2015. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol was at the forefront of the Pop Art movement and known for his brightly colored images. This exhibition examines Warhol's interest in capturing the likenesses of celebrities, as well as himself. On display will be more than 170 objects, including more than 90 screen print paintings, and more than 30 drawings, videos, paintings and photographs from his student days in the 1940s to the New Wave-era 1980s. Also on view will be an installation of Warhol's reflective Silver Clouds, helium and air-filled metalized balloons. (more...)
