The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey Presents Shakespeare's Most Notorious King

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will be available through the month of October when The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, in partnership with Drew University, presents a "double-bill" experience for students and adults. From October 6th - 30th, a single copy of the original First Folio, one of the world's most valuable, rare and influential books will be on public display at Drew University's Mead Hall. The renowned Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C. launched an historic tour of the book in early 2016 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. (more...)

The Public Theater has announced a one-week extension for the critically acclaimed FIRST DAUGHTER SUITE, a world premiere musical by Michael John LaChiusa, BroadwayWorld has confirmed. Directed by Kirsten Sanderson, FIRST DAUGHTER SUITE began previews on Tuesday, October 6 and was originally scheduled to close on Sunday, November 15. It will now run an additional week through Sunday, November 22. Ghostlight Records recently recorded the original cast recording of FIRST DAUGHTER SUITE to be released later this season. (more...)

The Neo-Futurists Announce 2016-17 Season

The Neo-Futurists announce their inaugural line-up for The Neo-Futurist Kitchen (a micro-festival on art and performance) with their 2016-17 Season, which includes three world premieres, multiple in-process initiatives and a 24-hour party. Can't Stop//Won't Stop: A 24-Hour Fundraiser with The Neo-Futurists launches the 28th season with local bands and pop-up performances, all benefitting the company's 2016-17 season and programs. The 28th season includes three full-length Prime Time productions: Saturn Returns created by Tif Harrison; The? Unicorn? Hour? created by Leah Urzendowski and Anthony Courser and The Food Show created by Dan Kerr-Hobert and Caitlin Stainken. The company continues its Neo-Lab residency, presenting Kirsten Riiber's Tangles and Plaques. In addition to beginning the 28th year of Chicago's longest running show, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, The Neo-Futurists expand their recurring storytelling performances with The Arrow, created by Kurt Chiang and Lily Mooney and explore a new Neo-structure through Nick Hart's The Infinite Whale. The Neo-Futurists announce their 2015-16 season alongside a slate of new artistic initiatives which explore devised theater and new works. The season includes two prime time productions: POP WAITS created by Malic White and Molly Brennan, and Mike Mother created and written by Jessica Anne. In addition, the company launches a series of year-round developmental presentations including a quarterly experimental performance workshop The Arrow created by Kurt Chiang and Lily Mooney as well as a new works residency Neo-Lab with an inaugural workshop of Saturn Returns created by Tif Harrison. The Neo-Futurists document this year of devised work exploration through Go! A Podcast about Creativity and continue another great year of the smash hit Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. BWW Interview: Getting to Know Him- Meet Broadway's New Royalty, THE KING AND I's Jose Llana!

Earlier this month, Jose Llana stepped into the role of the King of Siam in Lincoln Center Theater's Tony Award-winning production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I, directed by Bartlett Sher, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65 Street). This marks Llana's second experience in the iconic show, as he made is Broadway debut almost 20 years ago as Lun Tha in the 1996 revival. Llana joins Tony winner Kelli O'Hara for a strictly limited 11-week engagement through Sunday, September 27. Just after he took his first bow on the Vivian Beaumont stage, he checked in with BroadwayWorld to update us on taking on his new role, reuniting with some of his Here Lies Love friends, and so much more. Happy Birthday, Adam Guettel! Adam Guettel is an American composer-lyricist of musical theater and opera. He is best known for the musical 'The Light in the Piazza,' for which he won two Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Orchestrations, and two Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Orchestrations. His early works include 1996's 'Floyd Collins,' 'Love's Fire,' and 'Saturn Returns.' Guettel's songs have been recorded by such artists as Audra McDonald and Brian d'Arcy James. He also contributed original scores to several documentary films, including 'Arguing the World and Jack: The Last Kennedy Film.' In 1999, he performed a concert evening of his own work at New York's Town Hall. (more...)

The National Endowment for the Arts announced Tuesday that The Neo-Futurists are the recipients of an Art Works grant for the development of Neo-Lab's inaugural production, Saturn Returns, as well as its companion event The Neo-Futurist Kitchen (a micro-festival on art and performance). The Neo-Futurists also announce the creation of Neo-Access, a 3-pronged initiative to break down barriers and create inclusive and collaborative work for audiences and artists. (more...)
