Inspire Theatre to Present MAN OF LA MANCHA
by BWW News Desk - Oct 1, 2015

Inspire Theatre, Northwest Arkansas' newest professional theatre, announces its premier production, Man of La Mancha. Helmed by award- winning theatre director Christopher Murrah, the production is a departure from the large-scale tradition of the musical, utilizing an ensemble of 9 actors to tell the story of prisoners held in limbo during the Spanish Inquisition. While awaiting their own trials the prisoners are visited by Miguel de Cervantes, a poet and playwright, who spins the tale of Don Quixote de La Mancha and his squire, Sancho Panza. Through Cervantes' imaginative stories, windmills stand as giants, taverns become castles, and a scullery maid is treated with the respect and honor due a noble. The prison, once oppressive and stagnant, begins to open up as the community within frees their minds of "facts" and begins to seek "truth" through their own forgotten generosity and spirit. BWW Review: Four Humors Brings the Classic THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA to Life in a Delightful Way with a Clever Adaptation and Inventive Design
by Jill Schafer - May 18, 2016

When the ingenious gentlemen of Four Humors apply their unique, clever, and hilarious storytelling style to a classic such as THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA, it's a thing not to be missed. And even though I've experienced many such unique adaptations by Four Humors, as well as original work, last night's world premiere opening night still gave me something unexpected. As the play points out, everyone knows Don Quixote, even if you're never read the book or heard the name Miguel de Cervantes. Four Humors tells the classic story about honor, chivalry, and madness in a unique way using puppetry projection and by making Cervantes a character in the play, allowing the characters to step outside the story and comment on it. I believe this is Four Humors' debut at the Guthrie, which will no doubt expose a new audience to their often accomplished mission 'to create art that celebrates the humor, stupidity, and beauty of our world by letting the artist connect with the audience in a vulnerable and honest way.' BWW Review: DON QUIXOTE, Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford-upon-Avon
by Emma Cann - Mar 17, 2016

This season, the Royal Shakespeare Company celebrates not only the 400th anniversary of the death of their namesake, but also that of Miguel de Cervantes, with a brand new adaptation of Don Quixote. After a lifetime of reading books on chivalry, Don Quixote decides to embark on a quest of his own. Taking up a lance and sword, he sets out to become a wandering knight, defending the helpless and vanquishing the wicked. Hopelessly unprepared and increasingly losing his grip on reality, he travels across Spain accompanied by his faithful and equally ill-suited squire. With each calamitous adventure they experience, the romantic ideal of Quixote's books seems further away than ever. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Royal Ballet Triumphs at the Kennedy Center with Carlos Acosta's Don Quixote
by Frances Steiner - Jun 15, 2015

Marius Petipa first staged Don Quixote for the Imperial Bolshoi Theater in 1869 to great acclaim, and it immediately entered the ballet canon.  Almost every ballet enthusiast has seen a version of this work--new productions run the risk of seeming stale and mundane.  This general familiarity made The Royal Ballet's decision to open its American tour with the U.S. premiere of Carlos Acosta's Don Quixote daring.  The gambit paid off, however, as this production proved to be a fresh take on an old warhorse. BWW Reviews: A Knight of a Night at APA'S MAN OF A LA MANCHA
by Kristen Morale - Jul 28, 2015

What is interesting about Quixote, though, is that he is not a knight at all, but a man soon considered by the masses to be delusional - a complete lunatic to believe that knights are still in existence and can be of some heroic use amongst men when such people seem hopeless causes for which to fight. Yet, what is so beautiful about Miguel de Cervantes' unyielding hero (for that is what he is nonetheless) is that he teaches an incredibly valuable lesson: if one can find beauty in this world, a true hero will fight to attain it, regardless of what mockery may belittle his efforts and what perils may confront him (in whatever form they may come). With this said, the Academy Playhouse's production of Man of La Mancha is a beautiful rendition of a beautiful tale that audiences should flock over to see. (more...)

THE GOLDEN CHALICE OF HUNAHPU Released as an E-Book
by BWW News Desk - Jan 7, 2016

The Golden Chalice of Hunahpu, the 2015 Fiction Book Award winner of the Bay Area Independent Publisher's Association, is being released in ebook form through Amazon, Apple, Smashwords, Barnes and Nobles, Sony and other ebook stores. The Historical Novel Society, in a recent review, praised the literary historical novel The Golden Chalice of Hunahpú: A Novel of the Spanish Attack on the Maya (Full Court Press, 2014). The reviewer, Charlotte Kirsch, states, 'The Spanish conquest of the Mayan civilization in the 16th Century forms the dramatic climax of William Vlach's sweeping novel The Golden Chalice of Hunahpu, but the narrative is much more generous than that of simple military fiction; through a fascinating cast of disparate characters, Vlach dramatizes what he refers to as a 'sixteenth-century American holocaust.' The Golden Chalice of Hunahapú is an epic novel of the violent birth of the Americas, an odyssey moving from the pre-Columbian Mayan empire to the splendid Golden Age of Spain then back to the battle for the land and soul of Guatemala. The tale is told in three first person chronicles: Kaqchikel Mayan prince Belehe Qat is both witness and warrior as he tries to save his people; young and fierce Spanish noblewoman Beatriz pursues marriage to the powerful conquistador, Alvarado, only to find the New World is more than she bargained for; and the hilariously acerbic Domingo, a Sancho Panza-like monk, seeks to find meaning in the middle of this 16th century American holocaust. Their intertwining stories lead to the shocking volcanic climax. Vlach, a police psychologist, who has done field work in Guatemala with his anthropologist wife, Norita Vlach, has published poetry, essays, and won awards for both his playwriting and parody. Charlotte Kirsch ends her review for The Historical Novel Society by writing: 'The book is barely three-hundred pages long but feels as satisfying as an epic three times that length.' The Golden Chalice of Hunahpú: A Novel of the Spanish Attack on the Maya is available at independent bookstores, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com, and other online bookstores.
