New Historical Nove by William Vlach is ReleasedNew Historical Nove by William Vlach is Released
by BWW News Desk - Nov 11, 2014

Full Court Press is releasing the dramatic historical novel The Golden Chalice of Hunahpú: A Novel of the Spanish Attack on the Maya by San Francisco psychologist and writer William Vlach. The front cover is by noted Guatemalan artist Emanuel Paniagua. 'To understand the crisis of the children at the border, one needs to understand the violent origin of the Americas,' Vlach said. 'The book reveals the Spanish-Mayan war, the so-called Conquest, from the first person narratives of both the Mayans and the Spanish.' Early notes have included Kirkus Reviews: 'Vlach, a practicing psychologist, has clearly done his research for this debut novel; the historical detail is impressive and the settings are vivid and realistic.'; Ramón Sender Barayón, author of A Death in Zamora: 'What a page-turner!'; and Alejandro Murguía, Sixth Poet Laureate of San Francisco: 'A work in the great tradition of Miguel Angel Asturias-the magical voice of the Maya come to life.' The Golden Chalice of Hunahapú is an epic novel of the struggle for the Americas, an odyssey moving from the pre-Columbian Mayan empire to the splendid Golden Age of Spain then back to the battle for the land and soul of Guatemala. The tale is told in three first person chronicles: Kaqchikel Mayan prince Belehe Qat is both witness and warrior as he tries to save his people; young and fierce Spanish noblewoman Beatriz pursues marriage to the powerful conquistador, Alvarado, only to find the New World is more than she bargained for; and the hilariously acerbic Domingo, a Sancho Panza-like monk, seeks to find meaning in the middle of this 16th century American holocaust. Their intertwining stories lead to the shocking volcanic climax. Vlach, a police psychologist, who has done field work in Guatemala with his anthropologist wife, Norita Vlach, has published poetry, essays, and won awards for both his playwriting and parody. Cover artist, Guatemalan Emanuel Paniagua, who works with both paintings and sculpture, says about his work, 'I was born into an aesthetic culture that has been crafted through centuries with artistic mastery in weavings, clay, stone.' The Golden Chalice of Hunahpú: A Novel of the Spanish Attack on the Maya is available at independent bookstores, Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, and other online bookstores. BWW Reviews: NERTC Tackles MAN OF LA MANCHABWW Reviews: NERTC Tackles MAN OF LA MANCHA
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Nov 10, 2014

For its fall offering, the New England Regional Theatre Company mounted an ambitious and stirring production of Man of La Mancha at the Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham, Maine. The sixteen-person cast and twelve-musician ensemble invested this touching revival with passion and intelligence. Directed by John Willey, the 1965 Dale Wasserman-Mitch Leigh-Joe Darrion musical based on Miguel de Cervantes' epic novel, Don Quixote still burns with intensity, idealism, and a much-needed antidote in a chaotic modern world - the courage and hope to 'fight for the right' and follow the quest. Willey strikes the right balance between comedy and drama, and he handles the musical's framing device - that of Cervantes recounting his tale in a prison of the Inquisition - with visual and theatrical aplomb. He keeps the entire cast on stage for the duration and uses the exceptionally wide Orion space inventively, so that the action flows naturally and his musical staging is completely organic. Moreover, he elicits from his actors a fervent luminosity that proves inspiring. (more...)

by Frances Steiner - Jun 15, 2015

Marius Petipa first staged Don Quixote for the Imperial Bolshoi Theater in 1869 to great acclaim, and it immediately entered the ballet canon.  Almost every ballet enthusiast has seen a version of this work--new productions run the risk of seeming stale and mundane.  This general familiarity made The Royal Ballet's decision to open its American tour with the U.S. premiere of Carlos Acosta's Don Quixote daring.  The gambit paid off, however, as this production proved to be a fresh take on an old warhorse. BWW Reviews: A Knight of a Night at APA'S MAN OF A LA MANCHABWW Reviews: A Knight of a Night at APA'S MAN OF A LA MANCHA
by Kristen Morale - Jul 28, 2015

What is interesting about Quixote, though, is that he is not a knight at all, but a man soon considered by the masses to be delusional - a complete lunatic to believe that knights are still in existence and can be of some heroic use amongst men when such people seem hopeless causes for which to fight. Yet, what is so beautiful about Miguel de Cervantes' unyielding hero (for that is what he is nonetheless) is that he teaches an incredibly valuable lesson: if one can find beauty in this world, a true hero will fight to attain it, regardless of what mockery may belittle his efforts and what perils may confront him (in whatever form they may come). With this said, the Academy Playhouse's production of Man of La Mancha is a beautiful rendition of a beautiful tale that audiences should flock over to see. (more...)
