BWW Review: So Good It's Addictive...ACT 1's REEFER MADNESS
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 19, 2017

'Over-the-top' and 'larger-than-life' are but two of the descriptive phrases that may be used in reference to both director Jason Lewis and his latest theatrical project Reefer Madness the Musical - and, in both instances, they are equally justified. In all honesty, who else better than he to helm a production of the thoroughly madcap and deliciously campy musical now onstage at Darkhorse Theater through this weekend as the final show of ACT 1's 2016-17 season? BWW Review: SHREK THE MUSICAL Wows at Beef And Boards, Thru July 2
by Anton Anderssen - Jun 17, 2017

Now on stage at Beef and Boards is the ogre-sized, greatest fairy tale never told: the breathtaking Broadway musical adaptation of the hit movie Shrek. On one level, SHREK THE MUSICAL is silly family fun, but digging deeper into the story, there are messages that are crucial in life. The Princess, Fiona, never loses her faith in her fairytales. She is trapped in a tower, surrounded by boiling lava, with a fire-breathing dragon Hell-bent on keeping any interloper at bay. I greatly admire her character; how many people would give up on their dreams and just off themselves? I wanted to escape the cornfields of the Amish countryside desperately when I was young, and the odds were greatly against me. I never gave up on my dreams, and today I own a house by the ocean in Hawaii, and have my own knight in shining armor. Theatre gives you the chance to dream about how life can be, should be, or will be. It's like a seed that gets planted in your mind and one day can grow into a mighty oak. (more...)

BWW Review: Tarnished CABARET at Paramount Shows How Good This Classic Can Be
by Jay Irwin - Jun 14, 2017

The 1998 Sam Mendes staging of Kander and Ebb's classic "Cabaret" has come through the Paramount several times. And why not? It's a great show and a big crowd pleaser. But it requires a cast that gets the show and the tone to be done right. Fortunately for us the current tour at the Paramount is a shiny (or rather intentionally not shiny) example of how good this show can be and why it's still an enduring classic. (more...)

BWW Review: JANE EYRE, Richmond Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Jun 13, 2017

Before the world had an understanding of the word feminism, Charlotte Bronte was delivering a masterpiece tutorial in female independence and emancipation. Jane Eyre demonstrates that being plain and poor is no barrier to a desire for knowledge and the quest for love and liberation. The story is of an unloved orphan girl, sent to boarding school by her callous aunt. Despite a cold and harsh life, Jane eventually becomes a teacher at the school and then moves to become a governess, working for the darkly brooding Mr Rochester. The couple fall in love, but must try to overcome sinister secrets and internal battles about ethics, morality and justice. (more...)

Guest Blog: Writer Mike Akers On Adapting LA STRADA
by Guest Blog: Mike Akers - Jun 13, 2017

La Strada is one of Federico Fellini's most memorable films. It won the inaugural Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and a host of other awards at prestigious festivals all over the world in the Fifties. The story of Gelsomina, a poverty-stricken young woman sold by her mother to Zampano, a brutish itinerant street performer, certainly struck a chord with audiences at the time, and the role of Gelsomina made an international star of Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina.
