BWW Reviews: Theatre Artists Studio Nearly Drowns BABY WITH THE BATHWATER
by Herbert Paine - Sep 8, 2014

Censorship, psychoanalysis, and dysfunctional families all have been at the biting pen's end of Christopher Durang's satirical works. His genius lies in his ability to make us squirm, feel the pain, and yet laugh at the kooky protagonists of his plays ~ or, in his own words, to marry absurdist comedy to real feelings. Would that Theatre Artists Studio's production of Baby with the Bathwater measured up to the challenge! (more...)

Sophia Anne Caruso, Marvin Laird and More Lead RUTHLESS! BC/EFA Benefit Tonight
by BWW News Desk - Sep 5, 2014

Like the role she will be playing in a new production of 'Ruthless!,' the cult-hit musical, Sophia Anne Caruso is a young actress who will do anything to get the part. The triple threat tween will follow in the tap shoes of Laura Bell Bundy('Hairspray,' 'Legally Blonde') Britney Spears and Natalie Portman. Before they became stars, all three young actors were cast as the diabolically talented Tina Denmark. Of Caruso, Author/Director, Joel Paley says, 'We didn't find her, she found us!' Sophia tracked down the creators while they were trying out rewrites for a new Connecticut production, writing to tell them that after having been cast as Tina in regional theatre, one of the principle actors suffered a fatal heart attack during the dress rehearsal. The show never opened. Although heartbroken and terribly shaken ('It was the worst thing that ever happened in my life') she assured us she knew the role backwards and forwards and was more determined than ever to play Tina. 'We had to meet her. She was Tina Denmark.' An audition was arranged and the rest is going to be history! (more...)

by Don Grigware - Sep 16, 2014

Actress/lawyer Allison Brush made her very well-received cabaret debut at Upstairs at Vitello's Sunday September 14 with her show entitled For This You Went to Law School? Once an actress/singer, Brush, discouraged by rejection like many, left the profession and studied law, passing the bar exam on her first try. Now after many successful years as a lawyer, in which she claims she was miserable, she is returning to show biz, something she has sorely missed. In fact, participating in weekly sessions of Open Mic at the Gardenia and studying with songstress/master teacher Karen Morrow - law by day and singing at night - singing became her therapy. BWW Reviews: The Unsingable Blues
by Kristen Morale - Aug 29, 2014

Beautiful Soup Theater's Shades of Blue: The Decline and Fall of Lady Day is an unconventional, almost chilling ode to Holiday that is careful not to emphasize and dwell upon the singer's musical accolades and success; in fact, it does little to promote her career and the person as seen through the eyes of her adoring public. This production, written and directed by the incredibly talented Steven Carl McCasland (who also founded Beautiful Soup and serves as the group's Artistic Director), wades in the realm of storytelling without the fantastical twist that people always enjoy adding to make their lives seem more interesting - to add drama where drama may sometimes be due. Andrew Shecktor Releases 'Centralia PA, Devils Fire' Historical Fiction Novel
by BWW News Desk - Aug 25, 2014

Andrew Shecktor, Berwick, PA resident and author and former creative writing instructor, is proud to announce the final release of his first novel 'Centralia PA, Devils Fire,' published by and available at Amazon.com. Visit the website at www.centraliapadevilsfire.com. It all began with a preacher scorned, beat down by a band of brutal, ruthless Mollie Maguires in 1869. The town - Centralia, PA. Just the previous year the town founder, Alexander Rae, was brutally murdered by the same gang. With nothing but time on his hands while recovering from his injuries, he conjured a scheme to exact revenge, and placed a curse on the town that one day none shall remain but the St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church. Inspired by previous visits to the town and ultimately by a trip to the now deserted town, bought out by the state following an unstoppable mine fire that began in 1962, the author decided to write a fitting eulogy to the town. The novel is a fictional accounting based on fact and metaphorically presents the mine owners and industrialists as Satanical manifestations in need of exorcism. A cross between the style of 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Alice in Wonderland' the short novel is fun to read and also educational. General historical facts have been added to set the tone for each chapter, and great attention has been given to historical accuracy of things such as weather conditions, dates, astronomical data and historical figures. The author comments, 'In then end it will leave you wondering if there was indeed a conspiracy by the mine companies to take over the town by eminent domain.' Today, only a few residents remain, having won an uphill legal battle to remain in the town. The town zip code has been retired, and when the remaining residents move or die, the town will be turned over to the state. And then... there is the old man with the pipe... but you will have to read the book to learn more about him. (more...)
