BWW Recap: 'The Winds of Winter' Have Blown on GAME OF THRONES
by Jessica Naftaly - Jun 27, 2016

Last night was the finale of Season 6 of HBO's Game of Thrones and after a riveting epic episode of battles, we got something rather different this week. It had your standard Thrones finale elements; death, shocks, violence, and twists. However, most of it didn't really make much sense. We got plot development, but Thrones just seems like it's on a high speed train, eager to get to the final stop, without caring about the journey along the way. We had to say goodbye to a great many cast members this season, but this episode alone wiped out so many that it was hard to take a moment to even feel the impact of their character's death. The show has really embraced the 'efficiency is coming' methodology and it can surely be felt in this packed, fast-paced, and rather convoluted episode built on shocks but devoid of logic.  (more...)

by David Fick - Jul 9, 2016

ACTRESSES: AN ADAPTATION OF CHEKHOV'S 'THE SEAGULL' is the kind of production that captures one's attention. Anon Chekhov's 1895 drama was first produced the following year and became a landmark play in Konstantin Stanislavsky's 1898 staging for the Moscow Art Theatre. (more...)

Park Playhouse's production of John Kander and Fred Ebb's Chicago brings a slick, sultry, and sensual vibe to Washington Park, seducing its way through each member of the audience. BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS, Menier Chocolate Factory, 12 July 2016
by Marianka Swain - Jul 13, 2016

Anyone who ever played 'shop' as a child, trading real or imaginary objects over a table, will experience a thrill of recognition at Fiasco Theater's stripped-back take on Sondheim and James Lapine's ode to and deconstruction of storytelling. That's what we get for the swiftly evoked bakery, and there's a dressmaker's dummy standing in for a tree, a feather duster and Christmas tree ornament for a golden egg-laying hen, a ladder for a mighty tower, a wooden crate for a throne, shadow play during the action sequences, and flapping pieces of paper as the ever-helpful birds. BWW Review: Spectacular EVITA Takes MSMT Stage by Storm
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Jul 1, 2016

Twenty-five years after it was last presented at the Pickard Theater, Andrew Lloyd-Webber/Tim Rice's masterpiece has returned in triumph to Maine State Music Theatre in a stunning new production directed and choreographed by Marc Robin. Boasting the largest cast in the company's history (46), this Evita is gripping and epic, at the same time that it is touchingly intimate and magnificently detailed. The size of the endeavor is both literal and figurative, for MSMT's Evita succeeds not only in its grand sweep, but also in the magnitude of its intangible assets - unsparing honesty, intensity, and emotional depth.
