BWW Review: Disney's NEWSIES at The Fox TheatreBWW Review: Disney's NEWSIES at The Fox Theatre
by Chris Gibson - Jan 25, 2016

It's not unusual for movies to be adapted for the stage these days, in fact, it's become rather commonplace. But typically, musicals written for the screen that flop (even though they might have a rather substantial cult following), are usually avoided for obvious reasons. Although, that didn't stop the producers of XANADU from plowing forward, go figure. The Disney film NEWSIES actually seems likes a logical choice to revamp and produce on the stage, and it wound up winning Tony Awards for best score and choreography back in 2012, and becoming quite the hit. So why am I so surprised? I guess because the current touring production, while occasionally dazzling, comes off slightly uninspired and flat. Now, don't get me wrong, there are some really fine performances, an eye catching scenic design, cool effects, and energetic choreography that certainly lives up to expectations. And, like the film, an awful lot of people, both young and old, are guaranteed to truly love this show, as evidenced by the very enthusiastic response from the audience at the performance I attended. Local Poet Launches New Collection, GOLocal Poet Launches New Collection, GO
by BWW News Desk - Feb 9, 2016

Connecticut-born author Brendan Walsh has drawn on his experiences across country and globe to write 'Go' (Aldrich Press), a new poetry collection that follows the journey of several voices through travels in Laos, South Korea, and across the United States. 'Go' grapples with nothingness, the primal ecstasy of movement, and the variance of human consciousness and desire. The focus begins on Lao voicesthose of a foreign speaker interacting with Lao monks and women planting rice, a quiet observation of an unknown but familiar place. It moves to South Korea, inhabiting the voices of two Koreans and an outsider at odds with a foreign culture. Finally, the collection ends in the United States, the former home of a speaker who feels empty but sees flashes of brilliance on road trips and in day-to-day life. Ultimately, the collection reconciles its longing with movement, finding answers outside of concrete explanations, but through the act of doing and being purely in the flesh. 'In this full-length collection, Brendan Walsh wins us the way Buddhist temples win over acolytes: with their truths about suffering, the community of prayer halls, sacred reliquaries that follow the emptiness of courtyards. This poetry grounded in the experience of place becomes animate, takes form, gathers Laos, Korea, and the U.S. in its hot dance, a globe spinning to the rhythm of the eternal divinity in each of us,' says Lynn Houston, author of The Clever Dream of Man. 'Go' is an energetic and wise first collection, and its travels continue well past the final page,' adds Ruthless's Jeff Mock. 'Go' will launch during National Poetry Month with a book release on April 2, 2016 at New Haven's Lyric Hall Theater. To learn more, visit brendanwalshpoetry.com/gobook or contact publicist Mukethe Kawinzi at brendanwalshpoetry@gmail.com for an advanced review copy. About Brendan Walsh Brendan Walsh has been published in Connecticut Review, Off the Coast, Mason's Road, Lines + Stars, Noctua Review, Drunk Monkeys, and other journals. His first collection, Make Anything Whole, was published by Five Oaks Press in January of 2015. From 2013 to 2014, Walsh taught English on a Fulbright Grant in Vientiane, Laos and has also taught in Masan, South Korea. He currently lives in New Haven, CT and serves as Assistant Director of International Education at Southern Connecticut State University, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts. His work has been awarded the Anna Sonder Prize of the Academy of American Poets, the Leslie Leeds Poetry Prize, and a Freedman Prize for poetry in performance. by BWW News Desk - Feb 8, 2016

Barking Rain Press, a non-profit fiction publisher, announced the paperback and eBook release of the western double feature 'Border Lords and Armstrong's War' by Dos Caballos, New Mexico, author Lee Pierce. Pierce is also the author of the western adventure novels 'Bounty Hunter's Moon' and 'The Treasure of Peta Nocona.' This exciting western themed book includes two complete novellas by author Lee Pierce. In 'Border Lords,' when the Lucasville, Arizona, sheriff is gunned down by a ruthless gang of bandits, Deputy US Marshals Pharaoh Smith ('Bounty Hunter's Moon') and Silverjack McDonald ('Rough Justice') join forces to solve the murder of their former comrade. Pharaoh is a by-the-book lawman, while Silverjack will use any means possible to get the bad guys. All is not what it seems in this volatile border town, and it will take their combined skills to discover the real reason the town was raided. In 'Armstrong's War,' Badger Armstrong (alias Quick Jim Butler) stormed out of the family ranch in the Texas panhandle after a fight with his father 15 years ago, swearing never to return. Now tired of a gunman's life, he decides to ride back home, make peace with his father, and become part of his younger brother's life. Instead, he rides straight into a hornet's nest of hate and deceit. Mort Quarry has taken over most of the top grazing land in Deaf Smith County - except for the Armstrong ranch. Quarry is bound and determined to take over that ranch as well, and has lured Badger's gullible brother to work for him against his own father. Badger's pretty sure he can win the war against Mort Quarry - but first he'll need to survive his father's wrath while dodging bullets from his brother.
