PEN World Voices Festival Announces Masha Gessen Followed by Samantha Bee

PEN America has announced that leading Russian and American journalist and author Masha Gessen, will deliver the Arthur Miller Freedom to Write Lecture, followed by a conversation with comedian and political commentator Samantha Bee on the closing night of the PEN World Voices Festival. This year the thirteenth annual Festival, taking place in New York from May 1-7, will address some of the vital issues of the Trump era, with a special focus on the fractious relationship between gender and power. At a moment of historic threats to freedom and truth, Ms. Gessen and Ms. Bee, both activists in their own rights, will speak to Gessen's experience with Russian censorship and suppression of dissent, and parallels between the current administration and other authoritarian regimes. Cellist Inbal Sege Opens First Night of Roulette's String Theory Festival, March 29

Israeli-American cellist Inbal Segev, known for her "warm, pure and beautiful tone" (Strings Magazine), will open The Music of Anna Clyne, a concert marking the first night of Roulette's (509 Atlantic Ave) third annual String Theory Festival. Segev will perform Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne's Rest These Hands for solo cello. 5th Annual Casino Night Raises $160,000 to Support Eva's Village Programs

On March 10, close to 300 guests helped to raise more than $160,000, setting a new record for Eva's Village annual Casino Night fundraiser. Entertainment included blackjack, Roulette, craps, and a Texas Hold 'Em tournament, as well as a silent auction, buffet and open bar at the Valley Regency in Clifton. Event Co-chairs Matt Foley and John Araneo explained, 'This event is exciting for us, because it provides critical funding and helps spread the word about the incredible work being done at Eva's Village. Every dollar we raised at Casino Night will support the 20 integrated anti-poverty programs that help thousands of people turn their lives around, through food and shelter programs, medical treatment, addiction and recovery services, childcare, education and job training.' Lurrie Bell has been acclaimed for his intense guitar playing and passionate vocals which have made him a favorite at clubs and festivals around the world and earned him a reputation as one of the "leading lights" in the future of the blues.  Son of famed blues harmonica player Carey Bell, he has appeared on over 50 recordings either as leader or featured sideman and received numerous awards and honors, including Best Traditional Male Blues Artist in 2015 by the Blues Foundation in Memphis, and Most Outstanding Musician (Guitar) in 2016 by Living Blues magazine. In this program he will be joined by his band and include selections from his acclaimed Delmark albums, Blues in My Soul and the recent Grammy-nominated Can't Shake This Feeling. His band is composed of Willie "The Touch" Hayes (drums), Roosevelt Purifoy (keys), and Melvin Smith (bass). (more...)

In celebration of composer Lou Harrison's 2017 centennial, “sterling pianist and intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde” (The New York Times) Sarah Cahill will perform concerts of his music spanning half a century – exuberant dance music from his early years, dissonant complexity from the 1940s, and substantial works from the 1980s – as well as music by his close friends and colleagues including Henry Cowell, John Cage, Johanna Beyer, Merton Brown, James Cleghorn, and Frank Wigglesworth in a nationwide tour to cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Cleveland, Orlando, Maui, Chicago, and more. Her concerts will range from solo piano recitals featuring unpublished works by Harrison to performances of Harrison's Piano Concerto to chamber performances with well-known Harrison collaborators and scholars, including percussionist William Winant, who premiered the Varied Trio with Harrison. Cast Complete, Rehearsals Underway for Broadway's SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION

Rehearsals began this week for the revival of John Guare's critically acclaimed play Six Degrees of Separation starring seven-time Emmy Award winner Allison Janney ('Mom,' The Girl on the Train) as Ouisa, Tony Award winner John Benjamin Hickey (The Normal Heart, 'Manhattan') as Flan and Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton, '24: Legacy') as Paul. Directed by Trip Cullman (Significant Other, Yen), Six Degrees of Separation will begin previews Wednesday, April 5 prior to the official opening on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at the Barrymore Theatre. ACME, American Contemporary Music Ensemble, will perform music from its new 'portrait' album Thrive on Routine on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 8pm at Roulette (509 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY), on a concert series curated by Meredith Monk. The concert will feature Monk's first string quartet, Stringsongs, from 2005, which ACME has performed frequently and recorded for Q2 Music's Meet the Composer podcast. In addition, ACME will perform Caroline Shaw's in manus tuas for solo cello, Caleb Burhans' Jahrzeit for string quartet, and Timo Andres' Thrive on Routine for string quartet, from the new album.
