The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Presents ABSOLUT RUSSIAN, 3/21The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Presents ABSOLUT RUSSIAN, 3/21
by BWW News Desk - Mar 5, 2015

Why do we love Russian music? Is it the Romantic melodies that every listener can access? The raw emotion that moves us to tears? The way it comforts our unquiet hearts and souls? Whatever your reasons, this concert presents the triumphs, exhilaration, and jubilation that is the epitome of Russian music. Savor Borodin's Prince Igor, performed as it was originally composed with chorus, and recognize the source for Stranger in Paradise. Tchaikovsky brings the poignant story of love, wrath, and pride to life in Romeo and Juliet. Surtitles translate Borodin's Russian text and tell the movement-by-movement story scored by Tchaikovsky. Shostakovich's tour de force, Symphony No. 10, takes the listener on a journey from cynicism and desolation to joyous heights and exultation. (more...)

BWW Review: Orlando Shakespeare Goes unto the Breach with Masterful HENRY VBWW Review: Orlando Shakespeare Goes unto the Breach with Masterful HENRY V
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 25, 2015

One of the great benefits of having a professional Shakespeare company in town is that they are able to invest in productions of some of the Bard's works that don't often get produced at traditional theatres. While Orlando Shakespeare certainly produces great plays not found in the First Folio, the fact that they are able to bring performances of shows like TITUS ANDRONICUS, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, and PERICLES to the stage is a tremendous boon for Central Florida theatre fans. Productions of HAMLET, Romeo and Juliet, the Scottish Play, and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM will never go out of style, but it is truly special when you are able to attend an artistically satisfying production of one of Shakespeare's lesser seen works; like the masterful HENRY V, running through March 22nd at Orlando Shakespeare. by BWW News Desk - Feb 24, 2015

What if two of literature's most famous lovers got a second chance? R & J & Z starts with Act V of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and continues on, as the young couple navigates a world in which death isn't necessarily the end. Written in verse and set against the historical backdrop of Verona's plague, R & J & Z (the 'z' stands for zombies), throws old and new characters together over the course of an apocalyptic and action-packed 24 hours. Equally inspired by Shakespeare and contemporary zombie films, R & J & Z pushes the boundaries of theatrical humor and horror. When everyone is dead and rising from the graves, the rules no longer apply. (more...)

BWW Reviews: BARE A POP OPERA at Clandestine ArtsBWW Reviews: BARE A POP OPERA at Clandestine Arts
by Itai Yasur - Feb 22, 2015

While some might complement Clandestine-Arts' production of BARE: A POP OPERA for its 'can-do' attitude, there's a difference between the type of youthful inexperience that leads to theater that is exciting and new, and the type of reckless abandon that is at best moderately amusing and at worst incredibly dangerous. That is to say, there's nothing wrong with upstart theater company Clandestine-Arts' creative vision of producing emotion-driven musicals with low budgets, but theater is an incredibly technical art form. Whether the venue is a Broadway 2,000 seater, a high school auditorium, or a hole in the hall black box in Adams Morgan, there is never an excuse for a production so shoddily put together that the audience can reasonably fear for the performers safety, as well as their own; especially not at the admission price Clandestine is charging. At the end of the day, what really seems to be lacking is a sense of adult supervision. (more...)
