'Kleptomania: Who's Really Robbing God Anyway?' is Released
by BWW News Desk - Sep 19, 2016

Monetary tithing has been taught as undisputed fact for centuries. Kleptomaniac Who's Really Robbing God Anyway challenges that assumption and puts many of the modern tithe teachings to the test of scripture. This book examines the word tithe from the original Hebrew language and presents the orthodox meaning of the term based on culture, language and the literature of the Hebrew people. For church-goers who are tired of being told they rob God of tithes and offerings every Saturday and Sunday, and that God requires a tenth of their income until death, the new book opens the biblical scroll and shines a light on the truth of Scripture by debunking centuries-old tithe doctrines, which say a tithe is ten percent of a person's income. Dr. Frank Chase Jr. explains in his new book released August 14th why many church-goers are not the ones who really rob God. But exposes who the real God Robbers are in this shocking tithe manifesto. The book dissects the word tithe and places it back in its original scriptural context and explains its orthodox meaning. The real story of the book is that ten percent of a person's income does not represent a biblical tithe. The biblical tithe has always been food. A monetary tithe of ten percent represents a tax for religious purposes. Respected author and theologian Dr. Russell Earl Kelly remarked in his book, Should the Church Teach Tithing that 'true biblical tithing is narrowly limited to food and clean animal from land inheritance. Also, true biblical tithing was never extended to crafts, trades, and fish. Since Jesus was never a farmer, nor headman, he was not among those required to tithe.' Kleptomaniac: Who's Really Robbing God Anyway is an educational book that tackles a religious taboo subject such as tithing and adds more information to an under-saturated subject in the book world concerning tithing. The book is a scholastic work and should be read by anyone who has felt skepticism about the truth and accuracy of the modern tithe system. Editorial Review A book review by Reader's Favorite states, 'Kleptomania: Who's Really Robbing God Anyway? The untwisted truth about the centuries-old tithes and offering deception by Dr. Frank Chase Jr, Th.D fills a narrow but very real niche in a the area of biblically derived lessons and advice on the subject of tithes and offerings. I would have thought most Christians would research this topic themselves if it were very important to them, but to have all the references in one book, along with sound commentary and advice from a biblical scholar, certainly makes is easier. Dr. Fran Chase Jr. describes his own evolution of ideas about tithing and I must say we went through many of the same phases in pretty much the same order. I stopped evolving while Frank Chase Jr. went on to write this book that helps other Christians who have the same questions he had. Christianity at is best. 'Kleptomaniac: Who's Really Robbing God Anyway? may have more biblical quotes and references to tithing and money in general that any book I have every read, save of course, the Bible itself. It is written in a very smooth and articulate style that I'm guessing will be understandable to most people, but at the same time Dr. Frank Chase Jr's education and vocabulary are evident on every page. As is his faith and his desire to help. From Abraham to Paul, Frank Chase Jr, delves in the origin, the definition, the application, and even the abuse of the custom of tithing. It is an interesting and sometimes colorful history and one Christians should certainly be more aware of. This book will help them.' You can find the book on any online book retailers, including the publisher Book Baby. (more...)

BWW Recap: Journey to the Past in the Series Premiere of TIMELESS
by Courtney Henley - Oct 4, 2016

Full disclosure: I'm a sucker for a good historical, science fiction time travel television romp. Few things make me happier than watching a confused character walk into a time machine for the first time and discover a world full of new possibilities. That being said, few shows manage to pull off the delicate balance of hokey era-specific references and honest to goodness drama. One of two things usually ends up happening: either the cheesy one-liners about time travel and the scientific explanations of how it's possible overwhelm the audience, or both of those things are ignored and we're left with a regular, run of the mill drama. TIMELESS, NBC's newest primetime headline, manages to strike that hokey/honest balance and takes viewers along for the ride through time.  (more...)

BWW Review: LONE RIDERS Explores the Wild West in Austin, TX
by Amy Bradley - May 18, 2016

Trinity Street Players invites audiences to slow down and admire the old west in their latest production, LONE RIDERS, within the quaint blackbox at the First Austin Baptist Church. This original work, written by Carol Wright Krause and directed by Manuel Zarate, hopefully will survive its first workshop unscathed. Traditionally, during workshop productions, the writing and direction are experimental  - meaning quite possibly audiences can only see this original work in its current form once. During this preliminary malleable phase of any show, daring production companies like Trinity Street Players introduce something that literally has never been seen before. This sense of adventure is linked to the spirit and theme of LONE RIDERS. The intimate cast of players and the wonderful guitar stylings of Walker Lyle, take you on their adventure forcing self-reflection of individuals' motives and point of view. (more...)

Author Marc Ashton was kidnapped at gunpoint in his longtime home of Port-au-Prince Haiti in 2001. 'The Spirit of Villarosa' tells this story, but even more captivating is the interwoven tale of Marc's deceased father, Horace Dade Ashton, a great adventurer known as 'The Real Indiana Jones', whose persevering spirit is the catalyst for his bold escape. Marc promised himself he would tell his father's story, if he made it out alive. 'The Spirit of Villarosa' gloriously delivers that promise. Spanning the globe and nearly a century, Horace Dade Ashton's adventures are seriously larger than life. All of the famous events he witnessed and fascinating people he met will literally astound readers. From being President Theodore Roosevelt's personal photographer to witnessing the Wright brother's first flight, to sleeping in the same room in a Tibetan monastery that Jesus did, to becoming indoctrinated in Voodoo, to meeting Rasputin and Mark Twain, to capturing snakes and bank Robbers, and so much more. Horace did it all. Releasing on June 28, 2016, 'The Spirit of Villarosa' not only tells the tales of an adventurous father and a son's terrifying ordeal, but also illustrates the challenging truth of having such an illustrious father, whose beliefs and values often clash with his son's, and whose bold adventurous life choices create consequences for those around him. Beyond that, it is also a spiritual story of what human beings can accomplish when faced with the prospect of enlightening adventures, or their own violent deaths, and how these can be so similar. BWW Review: THE HIGHWAYMEN at History Theatre
by Karen Bovard - Feb 13, 2017

Hats off to the artists seeking a theatrical way to tell the story of how one thriving African-American community was demolished in order to build part of the Eisenhower era highway system. The city here is Saint Paul, MN, but similar history can be found in plenty of places: Charlotte, NC; Baltimore, MD; Pittsburgh, PA, among them. That's the matter at the heart of a new play, THE HIGHWAYMEN, at the History Theater, directed by Jamil Jude. (more...)

CRIME SCENES: DONALD WESTLAKE ON FILM to Celebrate the Famed Writer's Work
by BWW News Desk - Apr 10, 2017

Donald E. Westlake published nearly a hundred novels under various pseudonyms during his half-century career, the most influential being the hard-boiled Parker novels. Over the years, the hallmarks of a Westlake book never changed: He was a dedicated craftsman, writing clean, unfussy, powerfully effective prose, weaving complicated and surprising plots, and always letting a deep interest in (and often amusement at) human behavior drive the action. His prose has been the font for many and varied works of cinema-more than 30 films have been made of his books. From May 12 through 14, 2017, Museum of the Moving Image presents Crime Scenes: Donald Westlake on Film, an all-35mm screening series, featuring the most successful and interesting films based on Westlake's books.
