OK, so we're all sick of the trend of movies turned into musicals but, Dear Readers, just as movies have to keep remaking themselves, Broadway will keep culling from film vaults for new musicals. Let's face it, it ain't going anywhere. But if they're going to do it, such as with the current production of 'Secondhand Lions' being tried out on the stages of the 5th Avenue Theatre, let's make sure it can be done on a stage and still make sense. Yes, the fanciful stories and budding and heartfelt relationship between the two old curmudgeons and their young nephew are still there and done quite well in moments. But the attempt to jam that title down our throats without even the slightest hint of the actual lion storyline feels a bit insulting to anyone who saw the film. But we'll get to that in a minute. Theatrical shows for children are a dime a dozen, but children's theater productions that can also please adults are as rare and unique as the musically inclined animals in The Bremen Town Musicians. The exuberant musical-one of SummerStock Austin's three offerings currently playing in repertory at The Long Center-is a fantastic, enjoyable production for kids and adults. John LeDoux Shares the Biography of His Life in LEDOUX VIE

'LeDoux Vie' (published by Trafford Publishing) describes the life story of Jack LeDoux. Born in 1924 and reared in California, this story recounts the adventures of growing up in the 20s and 30s when there were no TV or youth sports' programs. Youngsters in those days played sandlot ball, cops and Robbers, cowboys and Indians, kick the can, and various other activities. There was little parental interaction but most of the time; the kids did behave although the story does recount some mischievous behavior, especially on Halloween. (more...)

First Look, Museum of the Moving Image's annual showcase for inventive new international cinema, returns for its third year with a program of 16 films from 10 countries, to be presented on weekends from January 10 through 19, 2014. First Look opens today, January 10, with the U.S. premiere of Alexandre Rockwell's Little Feet, a charming and bittersweet tale of two young siblings on their own, starring Rockwell's own children Nico and Lana; all three will appear in person with the screening. Closing Night on Sunday, January 19, will be the U.S. premiere of Antonin Peretjatko's The Rendez Vous of Déjà Vu (La fille du 14 Juillet), a colorful and freewheeling romantic burlesque, with shades of French New Wave and Monty Python, set amidst a beach vacation in France; Peretjatko will appear in person. Featured countries for other First Look films are Canada, Chile, Egypt, Greece, Ireland, Peru, Spain, and the United Kingdom. All of the films have played to acclaim at international film festivals, and all are New York premieres and many are U.S. premieres.
