BWW Feature: Sondheim's Most Hummable SongsBWW Feature: Sondheim's Most Hummable Songs
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 25, 2015

After seeing the new INTO THE WOODS movie twice over the holidays, I posted on Twitter about how two of the songs had stuck with me. After a tweet conversation, my BWW colleague Jeff Walker and I decided to put our heads together to try and come up with a list of Sondheim's most hummable tunes. Despite not discussing it beforehand, Jeff ended up picking songs from the 1960s and 70s, and I filled in the gaps with numbers from the 80s and 90s. (more...)

by Alix Cohen - Jan 24, 2015

'I was at the Police Reunion Concert at Madison Square Garden in 2008 and the energy was through the roof,' says vocalist/actress/writer Rosemary Loar at the start of her new show, STING-chronicity, at the Metropolitan Room. 'We were 18,000 strong, each of us challenging ownership of this man's music.' Loar feels special rapport with the oeuvre of Sting (Gordon Sumner, who was Police's lead singer and principal songwriter from 1977-1986, before he launched an incredibly successful solo career) as represented by her earlier show and CD, the celebratory Sting, Stang, Stung (see video of the 2010 show, below). 'We're onto the same zeitgeist,' Loar recently revealed in an interview. 'We're both Catholics and some of his writing is about obsession, guilt and penance.' (more...)

BWW Discussion: The Curtain Comes Down on AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOWBWW Discussion: The Curtain Comes Down on AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW
by Courtney Henley - Jan 23, 2015

It's been a long and winding road for the freaks in this season's AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Death, betrayal, sass, and some good, old-fashioned blood baths (literally and figuratively) sprinkled in for good measure made for quite a show. This season (like every other season) may have divided some viewers regarding whether it was spectacular or just spectacularly bad, but one thing's for certain: there's a lot to discuss. My fellow recapper and TV-obsessed friend Kara McCoy and I did just that. Join us, but beware: spoilers abound! (more...)

BWW Reviews: MOTOWN:THE MUSICAL at Shea's Performing Arts CenterBWW Reviews: MOTOWN:THE MUSICAL at Shea's Performing Arts Center
by Michael Rabice - Jan 21, 2015

When brainstorming concepts for new shows, the idea of making a musical about Berry Gordy--not necessarily a household name, may have seemed like an odd choice. So let's look at Plan B....a musical about the careers of Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye. Well, essentially the two are all the same musical. The slick production of MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL that opened on Tuesday night at Shea's tells the story of producer Berry Gordy and his start up record label, 'Motown.' (more...)

BWW Reviews: SCR Stages Captivating Post-Civil War Drama THE WHIPPING MANBWW Reviews: SCR Stages Captivating Post-Civil War Drama THE WHIPPING MAN
by Michael L. Quintos - Jan 19, 2015

In South Coast Repertory's excellent new production of Matthew Lopez's captivating play THE WHIPPING MAN---now playing at the Tony Award-winning Costa Mesa theater through January 25---an internal, theological tug-of-war is brewing just as the Civil War has come to an end. The absorbing, character-driven drama presents the uneasy return of an injured war veteran back to his family's home where two of his father's slaves---now free men under the law---have remained. The homecoming coincides with the Jewish holiday of Passover, which all three celebrate inside the war-torn ruins of this once grand Southern mansion. (more...)

by Jill Schafer - Jan 12, 2015

Next Sunday, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, two of the funniest women in America, will host the Golden Globes. Until then, we have Shanan Custer and Carolyn Pool, two of the funniest women in the Twin Cities, presiding over a delightful evening of comedy, friendship, and coffee. Their 2008 Fringe hit 2 SUGARS, ROOM FOR CREAM has gone through many incarnations, won an Ivey Award, and has now landed on Park Square Theatre's new Andy Boss thrust stage. Even though this is the third time I've seen it and many of the scenes and characters are familiar to me, it still makes me laugh until I cry, and marvel at the universality of life experiences, and the thing that binds us all together - coffee. From bad church basement coffee to the gourmet stuff at fancy coffee shops, it's a running theme in many of our lives and helps us get through the day, and the long cold winter. This show is a celebration of that, but more so a celebration of friendship and laughter. (more...)

Wondering if all it took was an acceptance letter to prove herself to the world, we can't help but feel happy seeing Hannah content and collected. Of course Adam just has to show up late, proving from his thirty-second scene that change is far from him. Still making Hannah's parents uncomfortable, still bitching about his recent career choice of acting, and still unable to show his true feelings about really anything dealing with Hannah's success.
