'A Whole New World' kicks off the summer youth program with Aladdin JR., based on the iconic animated film and featuring an Academy Award-winning score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. Soar to new heights on a magical, flying carpet ride filled with romance, adventure and hilarious hijinks. When street urchin Aladdin vies for the attention of the beautiful Princess, Jasmine, he uses a genie's magic power to become a Prince in order to marry her. Iago, Jafar, the Genie and more beloved characters come to life in this fantastical musical that celebrates the power of love and friendship. Just yesterday, the cast of Broadway's Beautiful gathered for a pop-up performance of some of Carole King's most famous hits, at a piano designed by the cast to celebrate Carole King's story. Each of the records on the piano represent the 14 Carole King songs in the show with lyrics from the title song, "Beautiful," on the front of the piano. John Cranko's Eugene Onegin is often referred to as a “story ballet for grown-ups” since it is devoid of the fantasy birds and other magical creatures that populate so much of the classical ballet canon. The dancers portray real people with real emotions as Cranko brings to life Alexander Pushkin's iconic verse novel. Cranko's version of the tale has new plot twists that some critics have found dismaying while others have applauded them. I fall into the latter category. (more...)
