BWW Review: PIPPIN at Shea's Buffalo TheatreBWW Review: PIPPIN at Shea's Buffalo Theatre
by Michael Rabice - Jan 27, 2016

The 1970's was an era of self discovery, rebellion and personal exploration. Broadway was morphing from the stock musical comedy formula towards the darker issues of life not usually seen on the musical stage . There was a young Stephen Sondheim delving into the deep interpersonal relations of marriage in COMPANY and FOLLIES, while Michael Bennett had gathered a group of young dancers who were exposing their inner demons and life stories in A CHORUS LINE. Meanwhile the composer Stephen Schwartz began his career with PIPPIN and would later write hit scores for GODSPELL and WICKED (more...)

STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 1/22/16- PORGY AND BESSSTAGE TUBE: On This Day for 1/22/16- PORGY AND BESS
by Stage Tube - Jan 22, 2016

Today in 1942, the first revival of Porgy and Bess opened at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for 286 performances. First performed in 1935, with music by George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward, it was based on DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy and subsequent play of the same title, which he co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward. All three works deal with African-American life in the fictitious Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1920s. Originally conceived by George Gershwin as an 'American folk opera', Porgy and Bess premiered in New York in the fall of 1935 and featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American singers-a daring artistic choice at the time. Former Football Star Morris Robinson Takes the Lead as 'Porgy' at La Scala, Nov. 13Former Football Star Morris Robinson Takes the Lead as 'Porgy' at La Scala, Nov. 13
by BWW News Desk - Feb 3, 2016

Gershwin's opera Porgy AND BESS returns to La Scala November 13-23, 2016 in a semi-scenic version with a conductor that will probably surprise many people: Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The interest of the Austrian maestro for this title dates back to an encounter that an uncle of his, a member of the Board of Directors of the  Metropolitan Museum, had with Gershwin, who had been profoundly struck by a meeting with Alban Berg in Vienna at the end of the 1920s and considered Porgy to be “his Wozzeck”. Inspired by this story, Harnoncourt has restored, thanks to the collaboration of the Gershwin Foundation, all of the original material from the premiere. We shall therefore be hearing the most authentic version of Porgy and Bess, including a great deal of music influenced by the European avant-garde that is usually struck out but which makes the opera much stronger and dramatic. It is directed by Philipp Harnoncourt, the cast includes Kristin Lewis, Pumeza Matshikiza and Angel Blue.   (more...)
