Penny Seats Theatre Company Announces 2017 Season

Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre Company is set to open its seventh season this year, with four shows, the largest season the company has ever attempted.  Through an operational support grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, the company has expanded its offerings and will have a year-round presence.   (more...)

In October, the UW World Series will present the world premiere of Antigona, a new work by Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca. Hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is one of the most authentic flamenco companies in the world today, and Soledad Barrio is its star. Now, in a unique creative partnership, this remarkable company joins with acclaimed American theater director Lee Breuer to create a new work, Antigona, based on Sophocles' ancient Greek heroine. Combining live music, song, and dance, Noche Flamenca's Antigona will bring the fiery, expressive nature of flamenco to one of the world's great tragedies in an evening-length work that promises to be both gripping and intensely moving. The work is conceived and directed by Martin Santangelo with choreography by Soledad Barrio, consulting direction by Lee Breuer, and visual and mask design by Mary Frank. (more...)

Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble to Present Frevo Dance Group, Today

For the past three summers four members of the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble have played summer concerts with original compositions and arrangements of music they love – programs designed for a summer evening of wonderful music. This first VCME program in its 28thseason brings elements of this program to the FlynnSpace. The group is called Frevo after an ecstatic dance by Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti. The mission of the VCME is to present new music and this concert is a fresh take on this theme. Peter and Wendy Matthews and Steven and Bonnie Klimowski have put together a program that is soul searching, dramatic, beautiful and just plain fun. (more...)

Today in 1991, the second Broadway revival of Peter Pan opened at the MInskoff Theatre, where it ran for 48 performances. Peter Pan is a musical adaptation of J. M. Barrie's 1904 play Peter Pan and Barrie's own novelization of it, Peter and Wendy. The music is mostly by Mark 'Moose' Charlap, with additional music by Jule Styne, and most of the lyrics were written by Carolyn Leigh, with additional lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The original 1954 Broadway production, starring Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook, earned Tony Awards for both stars. (more...)

Theatre, more than any other medium, has the ability to create magic and seldom has more magic been created on a stage than in the Zach Theatre production of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER. While the production is advertised as suitable for ages 6 and up, it is the adults who are in for the real treat with this whip-smart, endlessly inventive and deliciously campy and snarky production. There's no shortage of delights in store for the younger set, but it is the inner child of the adults in the audience who are in store for a marvelous roller coaster of a ride. (more...)
