BWW Review: THE WEIR, Tobacco Factory Theatres, 28 October 2016
by Nicky Sweetland - Oct 29, 2016

It's almost 20 years since THE WEIR had its premiere at the Royal Court and Conor McPherson's heart-warming tale about a close knit community feels just as relevant today. Director, Rachel O'Riordan has managed to establish a time warp, with her imagination of Brendan's Bar and provides a window into the world of provincial living, with all of the history and folk law, which holds such importance within these enclaves of society. Bloodshed on Broadway: Spine-Tingling Showtunes for Your Halloweekend
by Alexa Criscitiello - Oct 29, 2016

In 1785, a tale titled, 'The String of Pearls: A Romance' appeared in a series of Victorian fictions known as 'penny dreadfuls.' A story as gory as they come, the tale was a ghoulish account of a psychopathic barber and his pastry-proficient accomplice turning murder victims into meat pies. Gaining instant popularity among readers, the tale of obsession, vengeance, and deeply questionable pie fillings so captivated the public that the tale of Sweeney Todd was adapted for the stage before the ending had been revealed in print. BWW Review: I AM MY OWN WIFE is a Midsumma Must-See at fortyfive downstairs
by Brodie Paparella - Jan 25, 2017

World War II has been on our minds a great deal of late, with events preceding the rise of modern history's most reviled dictator being comparable to those elevating the incumbent American President. In East Berlin, the second World War was an intersection of prejudice, fear and violence from which few survived. Which is what makes this, the tale of Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf, a transgender woman of some prominence who lived through and since archived much of this dark period of history, all the more remarkable. I Am My Own Wife was first produced off-Broadway in the early noughties, and has since become a theatrical cornerstone of trans representation. Presented as a staged documentary, I Am My Own Wife oscillates between interviews, reenactments, transcripts and serves to catalogue Charlotte's life much in the way she maintained the Grunderzeit Museum for which in part she became famous. BWW Review: THE GREAT GATSBY Brings Iconic Characters to Life at the Orlando Shakes!
by Kelli McGurk - Feb 14, 2017

Gatsby? What Gatsby? When you hear this charming protagonist's name, what images flash through your head?  Lavish parties dripping with elegance?  An atmosphere of abandoned care filled to the ceiling with social climbers?  Pearls, fringe, and feathers that drape over the silhouettes of dancing women?  Smoke and mirrors that orchestrate a timeless vortex of pure magic?  'The Great Gatsby' has extended beyond the realm of high school reading curriculum, and has become an iconic entity synonymous with the 1920's.  The 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald has inspired certain adaptations including ballets, television episodes of popular shows, computer games, and most famously the 2013 film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire.  The Orlando Shakepeare Theater continues this legacy with their production of the stage adaptation by Simon Levy which opened on February 8th.   (more...)
