ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Arica Hilton is a Chicago based multi-media artist and poet. Born in Turkey, many of her collaborations are with international artists. Much like the Luminists, the poetic art movement that captured light as it moved across the American Landscape, Hilton's works are inspired by the European Romanticists, who depicted cool waterscapes reflecting nuanced skies. Hilton's paintings and installations are intricately woven with her poetry and three-dimensional materials, which transports them to the present while still capturing a timeless quality that is ever present in her works. Hilton is co-owner of the Hilton/Asmus Contemporary Gallery. Until recently, she was the president of the board of the Poetry Center of Chicago. Her book LUMINISIM REVISITED will be released in May 2015. (more...)

by John Hoglund - May 18, 2015

To paraphrase a Peter Allen song, she could have been a sailor. Instead, she chose to sail the open seas. And now she's singing about it. It all made for a promising theme for the Manhattan cabaret debut of Robyn McCorquodale and her series of four April shows, Diary Of A Piano Girl, at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Pert, lively and totally likable, she shared her stories fused with original songs about wanderlust in which all roads eventually lead back home. From the opening number to closing with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," her only familiar entry, she took a circuitous route with visits to numerous ports of call. New to our local cabaret shores, but no stranger to entertaining, she's made her mark in the Big Apple with this outing. (more...)

by Karen Bovard - Mar 16, 2015

Outrageous, bawdy, and pointed: LYSISTRATA may be one of the oldest comedies we have (written in 411 B.C.E. by the great Greek troublemaker Aristophanes) but it remains both wickedly funny and pertinent. He wrote it 20 years into a bloody war that seemed endless. His premise? Have women conspire to withhold sex from their men until they can't take it any more and agree to a peace treaty. (more...)

BWW Reviews: IN THE MOOD Brings the Boogie to New OrleansBWW Reviews: IN THE MOOD Brings the Boogie to New Orleans
by Heidi Scheuermann - Feb 3, 2015

Alright, so unlike most humans who are currently in their mid-twenties, I grew up listening to the tunes of artists like Bing Crosby (not just at Christmastime), Judy Garland, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters… I could go on forever. I listened to it because my dad listened to it because his dad listened to it. It's in my blood, I can't help it. Besides, have you ever given 40s music a really good listen? If you have, you'll know that there never were smoother voices in this history of forever. Silky smooth, buttery voices. People just don't sing like that anymore! Not to mention full orchestras backed the singers. Full orchestras! We're talking piano, drums, trumpets, trombones, bass (the upright kind), saxophone… I mean these guys really knew how to rock!
