BWW Review: Keenlyside Returns to Met with a Low-Key DON GIOVANNI
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 30, 2016

When last seen at the Met , baritone Simon Keenlyside showed off his suave vocalism and superior acting skills in operas based on Shakespeare: He was elegant and intelligent in HAMLET by Ambroise Thomas and a charismatic Prospero in Thomas Ades's THE TEMPEST. He could have picked up on any of those traits and translated them into a memorable Don Giovanni. Instead, he turned in a well-sung but low-key performance that didn't quite pull the opera together. BWW Review: MAN IN SNOW: World Premiere of Chilling Tale
by Nancy Grossman - Oct 7, 2016

MAN IN SNOW, Israel Horovitz's newest play, receives its world premiere at Gloucester Stage in a riveting production directed by the playwright. A full-length stage adaptation of an earlier radio play, the seed of the fictional story was sown from a real-life event in Alaska nearly twenty years ago. A stellar cast, led by a convincing and commanding Will Lyman, fully inhabits their characters, and the design team creates an effective, evocative landscape and soundscape. (more...)

BWW Review: THE WEIR, Tobacco Factory Theatres, 28 October 2016
by Nicky Sweetland - Oct 29, 2016

It's almost 20 years since THE WEIR had its premiere at the Royal Court and Conor McPherson's heart-warming tale about a close knit community feels just as relevant today. Director, Rachel O'Riordan has managed to establish a time warp, with her imagination of Brendan's Bar and provides a window into the world of provincial living, with all of the history and folk law, which holds such importance within these enclaves of society. Bloodshed on Broadway: Spine-Tingling Showtunes for Your Halloweekend
by Alexa Criscitiello - Oct 29, 2016

In 1785, a tale titled, 'The String of Pearls: A Romance' appeared in a series of Victorian fictions known as 'penny dreadfuls.' A story as gory as they come, the tale was a ghoulish account of a psychopathic barber and his pastry-proficient accomplice turning murder victims into meat pies. Gaining instant popularity among readers, the tale of obsession, vengeance, and deeply questionable pie fillings so captivated the public that the tale of Sweeney Todd was adapted for the stage before the ending had been revealed in print. BWW Review: THE PEARL FISHERS, London Coliseum, 19 October 2016
by Alexandra Coghlan - Oct 20, 2016

You have to get through an awful lot of shell to even glimpse the jewel at the core of The Pearl Fishers. Bizet's opera is much more than just a good duet - the score is glossy with melody, propelled along by some rollicking choruses - but the situation is so awkward, the plot so absurd (yes, even by operatic standards) that getting to the good stuff can prove almost impossible. Penny Woolcock's 2010 production, revived here for the second time, does a seductive visual dance in a desperate attempt to distract from the opera's flaws, but ends up just drawing more attention to them.
