BWW Review: Fantastic Z's DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND a Bit Too Campy
by Jay Irwin - Sep 30, 2016

Fantastic Z Theatre is closing out their season of gay comedy with the campy take on 50's sci-fi, Buddy Thomas and Kenneth Elliott's 'Devil Boys From Beyond'. And while this crazy romp certainly has the fun of their previous shows, at times the camp gets to be a bit much to the point of lacking focus and it's there where the play suffers. (more...)

BWW Review: PETER AND THE STARCATCHER Reveals How the Saga of Peter Pan Began
by Shari Barrett - Oct 3, 2016

Before Peter had the last name Pan, he was a browbeaten 13-year old orphan shipped off with his two mates from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. The boys know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain's cabin, containing a precious, otherworldly cargo, given to a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training, who realizes that the trunk's precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful it must never fall into the wrong hands. During the journey, the ship is taken over by pirates - led by the fearsome Black Stache (who will later be known as Captain Hook in The Adventures of Peter Pan) - a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own, making the journey quickly become a thrilling adventure. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER playfully explores the depths of greed and despair... and the bonds of friendship, duty and love. BWW Review: SCORSESE AMERICAN CRIME REQUIEM Is a Killer at the Wallis Annenberg
by Don Grigware - Oct 3, 2016

For the Record is first and foremost an absolutely awesome show visually... and emotionally. The creative team of For the Record, namely Anderson Davis, Shane Scheel and music supervisor Jesse Vargas, began these amazing shows back in 2010 at Show at Barre on Vermont which turned into Rockwell Table and Stage. It's perfectly suited to a cabaret setting focusing on movie scenes and songs from a particular filmmaker. I first saw Baz Luhrman before it crossed country to great success; another big hit is the show about Quentin Tarantino. Now, in its debut, For The Record: Scorsese American Crime Requiem world premieres at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts through October 16. Scenes form Martin Scorsese films are mixed together with pop songs from the soundtracks of his films featuring a spectacular cast. It's a bigger venue but suits Scorsese's portrayal of violent crime in America to a tee. (more...)

BWW Review: Lake Worth Playhouse's URINETOWN a Rush of Wit
by Trevor Durham - Oct 22, 2016

Political humor and an abundance of urine aren't an obvious match for downtown Lake Worth's theatre scene. Artistic director Jodie Dixon-Mears and director Clayton Phillips decided, after many years of waiting, that the time was ripe to throw Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis' satirical masterpiece at the Palm Beaches. Boasting a cast of strong vocalists, and the comedic timing this show requires, Urinetown at the Lake Worth Playhouse is a strong stream of wit. (more...)

by Frank Benge - Oct 2, 2016

PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT: THE MUSICAL is a jukebox musical adapted from Australian film director-writer Stephan Elliott's 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Adapted by Elliott and Allan Scott, the musical uses well-known pop and disco songs as the score. It tells the story of two drag queens and a transgender woman who make a trip from Sydney across the desert in a bus they name Priscilla to do a drag show in the resort town of Alice Springs in the Australian desert. Along the way, they encounter a slew of odd characters, homophobia and love in the most unexpected of places. The original production debuted in Australia at the Lyric Theatre, Sydney in October 2006. There comes a moment in Act Two (or maybe it's Act One - on second thought, maybe it's the second Act One, although it could be the third…) of Michael Frayn's Noises Off, now onstage at TPAC's Andrew Johnson Theatre, in which Martha Wilkinson comes onstage, hits her mark, cuts her eyes at another actor and with perfect timing reaches out to touch his arm, her expressive face showing every word the audience needs to hear, eliciting guffaws and applause as her reward. BWW Review: RUTHLESS THE MUSICAL Kills at Creative Cauldron
by Keith Tittermary - Oct 11, 2016

"Dying is easy, comedy is hard". The old adage has been attributed to countless comedians over the years. When a musical comedy attempts to combine comedy and death, the outcome can either be successful (think Monty Python) or fall on its face. Ruthless! The Musical, a 1992 off Broadway campy musical, which opened this week at Creative Cauldron in Falls Church, falls into the latter category. The intermission-less show written by Marvin Laird and Joel Paley has funny bits, and a few memorable songs, but overall the piece, which has had a successful life in regional theater, is just flat. Sure, it spoofs musicals like Gypsy and movies like All About Eve, but the humor is a bit rudimentary and plays more like a bad SNL skit, then a well-polished farce. (more...)

Founded in 2004, New York City Center's annual "Fall for Dance" festival is an inspired idea that continues to fulfill the admirable mission of introducing new and younger audiences to the world of dance. Tickets are a mere $15, a price that's within the reach of millennials yet that coincidentally also tempts NYC's older dancegoers to venture out for performances of less than traditional dance fare.
