BWW Review: Fantastic Z's DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND a Bit Too Campy
by Jay Irwin - Sep 30, 2016

Fantastic Z Theatre is closing out their season of gay comedy with the campy take on 50's sci-fi, Buddy Thomas and Kenneth Elliott's 'Devil Boys From Beyond'. And while this crazy romp certainly has the fun of their previous shows, at times the camp gets to be a bit much to the point of lacking focus and it's there where the play suffers. (more...)

BWW Review: MTG Provides a Lilting Rendition of PROMISES PROMISES
by Don Grigware - Sep 27, 2016

In 1968 Promises, Promises, based on 1960's hit film The Apartment, opened on Broadway to great critical and popular acclaim. It was the first collaboration between Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and the resultant score was - and still is - regarded as one of the most gloriously upbeat musicals to grace a stage. Throw in Neil Simon, who wrote the book, and how can you miss having a hit? Promises2 was nominated for 8 Tony Awards and won 2 for Jerry Orbach and Marion Mercer. The show was successfully revived in 2010 in New York starring Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth, but did not receive nearly the same praise from audience or critics. (more...)

BWW Review: KINKY BOOTS Struts Sex, Heels, and Acceptance to Pittsburgh
by Dylan Shaffer - Sep 21, 2016

What is the most beautiful thing in the world? Nature? Love? Food? What if I told you that for some, the answer was shoes? That is the exact mantra the Price family has passed down though the generations and unto the most recent heir, Charlie. When it comes his turn to take over the family shoe business, he is conflicted:  stuck somewhere between the ill-fated triangle of paternal expectations, fiancée demands, and personal validation. BWW Review: GYPSY at Music Theatre Of Connecticut
by Melinda Zupaniotis - Sep 19, 2016

With a minimalist set depicting an abandoned stage - brick wall, ladder, random set pieces, and a piano - Music Theatre of Connecticut begins its 30th season with the iconic musical, Gypsy. Written in 1959, Gypsy harnesses the dream-team creative talents of music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents, plus the original production was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. All of these legends combined certainly raises the bar for expectation, and therefore, this show can be a difficult one for any theatre to produce. All in all, MTC did a good job of presenting this whirlwind piece. You should go! (more...)

BWW Review: Outstanding ALL THE WAY Stirs at South Coast Repertory
by Michael L. Quintos - Sep 19, 2016

Right at the start of Robert Schenkkan's mesmerizing Tony Award-winning play ALL THE WAY---now playing in an outstanding new production at Orange County's South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through October 2---actor Hugo Armstrong is introduced in what would become one of the most powerful, fiery acting performances I have witnessed on this very stage. Commanding, and yet remarkably relatable without ever traversing caricature, Armstrong deftly portrays one of American History's most complex leaders, our 36th President, Lyndon B. Johnson. Armstrong's powerhouse portrayal is the explosive epicenter of a richly dense, dialogue-heavy drama that recounts the rocky 11-month period leading up to Johnson's re-election as the leader of the world's most powerful nation. The play spends its entirety focusing on this contentious time which finds Johnson pushing for the passage of the Civl Rights Act---which itself incites a tug-of-war between his longtime pro-segregation Dixiecrat friends and the African-American community lobbying for rights that have been long overdue. BWW Review: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS at Playhouse On Park
by Joseph Harrison - Sep 19, 2016

One of the biggest thrills I get as a theatre reviewer is to experience a show that I love in a new light, and to discover things about it that I never noticed before, no matter how many times I may have seen it. This was my experience viewing the first production in Playhouse on Park's eighth season, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. (more...)

BWW Review: STAGEright's TOXIC AVENGER – Fun but as Solid as Toxic Waste
by Jay Irwin - Sep 19, 2016

There's nothing wrong with a bit of mindless fun at the theater. Some of my happiest memories are sitting in a darkened theater laughing hysterically at Mormons or man eating plants or oversexed puppets. But while the fun in those instances may be base and mindless they were all still backed up by a well crafted and well put together show and that's where "The Toxic Avenger Musical", currently being offered from STAGEright, falls flat. Sure, it's goofy, in your face, Over the Top fun but appealing to our love of things a little bit gross and repeatedly calling someone a slut cannot replace good writing and pacing. (more...)

BWW Review: A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER is Great Fun at The Fox Theatre
by Chris Gibson - Sep 19, 2016

So, this was my first time seeing A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER, and as the plot began to unfold, I was struck by its similarity to a film I saw many years before. Growing up I remember watching selections from the Janus Films collection on my local PBS station (KETC, channel 9 in St. Louis), and the film that immediately came to mind was Kind Hearts and Coronets, which featured Alec Guinness in a variety of roles. Reading the program I noticed that Roy Borniman's novel of the same name was the basis for this Tony winning musical. Mystery solved. This is a wonderfully fun take on the story, and makes for an engaging and highly entertaining experience. Even if you've never seen the movie or read the book, you'll find plenty to love about this splendid adaptation that makes it all seem very fresh and funny! (more...)

by Joseph Harrison - Sep 19, 2016

Musicals have an amazing way of transporting an audience to exciting, sometimes magical places. You might find yourself in the middle of a romantic kingdom, on the rooftops of turn-of-the-century London, or in the catacombs of a French opera house. But when the lights come up on the latest show at the Broad Brook Opera House, audiences find they have been transported to a place that is, well, a little less magical - the Armadillo Acres Trailer Park in Starke, Florida. BWW Review: EIGHT BY TENN: Alas, a Menagerie
by Nancy Grossman - Sep 17, 2016

Zeitgeist Stage Company presents a collection of short plays by Tennessee Williams. BWW Review: Nashville Ballet's Lushly Romantic CINDERELLA Opens the New Season
by Jeffrey Ellis - Sep 17, 2016

From the very first moment - when principal guest conductor Nathan Fifield raises his baton and the musicians of the Nashville Symphony play the very first notes of Prokofiev's lush score - it becomes apparent that Nashville Ballet's Cinderella is going to be something very special. And so it goes for the next two-and-one-half-hours: All the way to the final tableau in which the lovely young woman (danced with power and grace by the always-superb Kayla Rowser) finds herself upon a swing in an altogether bucolic setting, with the comforting and loving arm of her dashing prince (Judson Veach, handsome and steadfast) gently caressing her. BWW Review: DINNER AT THE TWITS, The Vaults, 14 September 2016
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Sep 15, 2016

Justin Bieber To Headline New Year's Eve At Fontainebleau Miami Beach With Special Poolside Performance
by BWW News Desk - Sep 13, 2016

by Andria Tieman - Sep 13, 2016

The thought of seeing a dramatic version of the epic poem Beowulf may make many people cringingly remember the sweaty days of undergrad and trying to parse meaning out of Olde English while being lorded over by a condescending professor and at least one overly enthusiastic classmate who won't shut up about it. Or maybe that's just me. The good news is that Tritnity Rep's production of BEOWULF: A THOUSAND YEARS OF BAGGAGE is not only hilarious, but 100% accessible even to those who have never read, and maybe don't want to read, the book.  This play is half academic lecture--but funny, and half manic musical fever dream, which come together beautifully to create a spectacle of light and sound.  Punctuated by dramatic, towering sets and scowling warrior maidens, it feels like Mad Max meets Bladerunner set in a wholly new dystopia.  This is a play that is fully immersive and unlike anything else out there.  It's so exciting to know the basic plot of a story, but still be surprised with what comes next, and this production is unexpected and unique in the best way. BWW Review: Forever Entertaining FANTISTICKS Receives a Sterling Production at Pasadena Playhouse
by Don Grigware - Sep 13, 2016

The longest running musical in the world The Fantasticks is always at its best when produced and performed with simplicity. When I first saw it in New York in the 60s, it was performed in a cabaret space against a brick wall, with the suspension of a paper moon above. You can't get much simpler than that. In the current revival at the Pasadena Playhouse, the setting is bigger: a dilapidated, war-torn theatre in Southern California, shuttered since 1969, into which the actors enter to create art. The space may be bigger than the original, but the fine work on display maintains simplicity, especially in its message of love. This is a stunning production, one of the very best I have seen, with a magnificent interracial cast under the seamless direction of Seema Sueko. (more...)

BWW Review: Studio Tenn's Stunning EVITA Makes History on Opening Night With Powerful Performances
by Jeffrey Ellis - Sep 10, 2016

As assured and confident as any long-running musical now - or ever, for that matter - on Broadway, the altogether worldly and completely engaging production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, playing at Andrew Jackson Hall through September 18, gives Nashville audiences the kind of exceptional theater experience they've come to expect from Studio Tenn.
