BWW Reviews: A Lovely Traditional 70th Anniversary Production of GLASS MENAGERIE at Greenway CourtBWW Reviews: A Lovely Traditional 70th Anniversary Production of GLASS MENAGERIE at Greenway Court
by Don Grigware - May 19, 2015

For many, Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie remains his finest play. Semi-autobiographical, the play takes place in St. Louis during the Depression and depicts the relationships between a restless alcoholic factory worker, wannabe writer, his overbearing mother and his psychologically deficient sister - all of which stems from Williams' actual background. Williams finds his voice in Tom. (Brian Foyster) (more...)

BWW Reviews: THE CHILDREN'S HOUR Still Packs a Punch at ArouetBWW Reviews: THE CHILDREN'S HOUR Still Packs a Punch at Arouet
by Jay Irwin - May 18, 2015

You might not think that a play from the 1930's would be so resonant today. But in our world where it's so easy to slander someone and spread malicious rumors at the click of a mouse, a play like "The Children's Hour", currently playing from Arouet, feels like an ominous precursor of things to come. And while the attitudes about the situations may have changed, the hurtful nature of gossip remains the same and Arouet's production deftly examines what that kind of hurt can do. (more...)

by Richard Sasanow - May 15, 2015

It was 'out with the old, in with the new' for another of the Franco Zeffirelli productions that were once the Metropolitan Opera's bread and butter, designed for audiences to cheer for the scenery even when the cast might not have been top drawer. This time, the victims of changing times (and administrations) were the twin bill of Mascagni's CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA and Leoncavallo's PAGLIACCI. (more...)

BWW Review: PITCH PERFECT 2 Sings a Beautiful, Hilarious Song of FriendshipBWW Review: PITCH PERFECT 2 Sings a Beautiful, Hilarious Song of Friendship
by Matt Tamanini - May 15, 2015

Making a film sequel is difficult, especially when it doesn't involve a superhero cinematic universe. In the case of following up 2012's surprise musical success PITCH PERFECT, the task was especially daunting; how do you improve upon a low-budget sleeper hit that shattered any and all conceivable expectations? The original film found success by blending what audiences have always wanted from a college comedy (mildly crude humor and young people falling in love) with what they never knew they wanted from a college comedy (a cappella singing and projectile vomit). While there is none of the latter, PITCH PERFECT 2 has the former three in spades; and despite noticeable tonal differences, the sequel is a surprisingly touching, laugh-out-loud musical party that should more than live up to the sky-high expectations of the franchise's legions of fans. BWW Reviews: Classic ODD COUPLE Given Classic Treatment at Sierra Madre PlayhouseBWW Reviews: Classic ODD COUPLE Given Classic Treatment at Sierra Madre Playhouse
by Don Grigware - May 11, 2015

It's been 50 years since Neil Simon wrote The Odd Couple, perhaps the most famous of his early plays. March, 1965. I was a freshman in college, and little did I know that one day I would play Felix Unger in a local production onstage. Needless to say, I was certainly smitten with the crazed character and his neurotic mannerisms and with Simon's terribly funny comedic lines, whenever I watched the film with Jack Lemmon and the TV series with Tony Randall. Not so easy to essay...this character - as I found out first hand - for this play with all its laugh.a.minute jokes is really a very serious drama about the frailty of relationships and how we suffer through them. Now onstage in a wonderfully grounded and real portrait, The Odd Couple still holds up; the Sierra Madre Playhouse production, under the meticulous direction of Alan Brooks, does the classic proud. BWW Review: THE STILL ALARM and BLACK COMEDY Share the Stage at the Morgan-Wixson TheatreBWW Review: THE STILL ALARM and BLACK COMEDY Share the Stage at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre
by Shari Barrett - May 10, 2015

Farce is a very difficult type of comedy to do well. It takes the ability of actors to present real characters in outrageously unreal situations so that we care about what happens to them. Just using over-the-top mannerisms and loud vocalizations does not accomplish this, and what you wind up seeing onstage are caricatures rather than real people who just get caught in outrageous situations beyond their control. Such is the case with the two one acts now being presented at Santa Monica's Morgan-Wixson Theatre, The Still Alarm by George S. Kaufman and Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer. (more...)
