BWW Review: Mercurial Theatre Makes Impressive Debut with THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE
by Frank Benge - Jul 5, 2016

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines, he died in poverty at the age of 46, and is only now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE is a short story written in March 1927. In the tale, an unnamed narrator pieces together the story of an area known by the locals as the 'blasted heath' in the wild hills west of Arkham, Massachusetts. The narrator discovers that many years ago a meteorite crashed there, poisoning every living being nearby. The vegetation grows large, but is inedible due to a metallic taste, animals go mad and are grotesquely deformed, and the people go insane and die one by one. Seeking to create a truly alien life form, he drew inspiration from numerous fiction and nonfiction sources. First appearing in the September 1927 edition of Amazing Stories, THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE became one of Lovecraft's most popular works, and remained his personal favorite short story. It was adapted into feature film versions in 1965, 1987, and 2010. Forbidden knowledge is a central theme in many of Lovecraft's works. His characters are often driven by curiosity or scientific endeavor, and in many of his stories the knowledge they uncover proves so Promethean in nature that it leaves the character regretting or destroyed from what they have learned or being destroyed psychically. In the case of THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE, all of these are true. (more...)

Instead of the usual gala fare -- bits of firecracker variations and pieces of ballet classics -- Sergei Danilian's 'Ardani 25 Dance Gala' at New York City Center, August 19 and 20, is classic Danilian. The intrepid impresario, who has never side-stepped risk, will celebrate Ardani Artists's quarter century of producing in the United States and abroad with a trio of U.S. premieres, two by young, unknown, but up-and-coming Russian choreographers, and one by American Ballet Theatre principal Marcelo Gomes. BWW Review: St. Louis Actors' Studio's Intriguing LABUTE NEW THEATER FESTIVAL
by Chris Gibson - Jul 26, 2016

We're so lucky to have the privilege of having the St. Louis Actors' Studio present the Labute New Theater Festival each year. Submissions come from around the country, are whittled down to a few, and then presented in two parts, with each section receiving a full two week run. In addition, there are staged readings of the High School finalists who also submit their new works. While I was unable to attend the first part, I did get a chance to see the second, and was pleased with the results of this years' choices. It was a good mixture of styles and approaches, and it continues to be something our region should be very proud of. (more...)

BWW Review: The MUNY's Marvelous MAMMA MIA!
by Chris Gibson - Jul 25, 2016

I've seen MAMMA MIA! many times, and I've always enjoyed the way it utilizes so many of ABBA's marvelously catchy, and so obviously theatrical in nature, tunes to tell its simple story. With the band cranking out a righteous sound, and back up singers filling the night air with harmony, The MUNY reminds you of why its just so unique and amazing. It has the ability to make a show seem larger than life. That's exactly what happens here in spectacular fashion. Go see it and enjoy this perfect show for a summer's evening under the stars! BWW Review: CATF THE WEDDING GIFT is Visually Stunning, but Difficult to Decipher
by Johnna Leary - Jul 21, 2016

At its basic essence, a play tells a story. But when the audience has difficulty understanding the story and the language, the message, no matter how poignant or powerful, is lost. The Wedding Gift, a world premiere play at the Contemporary American Theater Festival, is a visual feast for audience members, but due to the storytelling method, many audience members are unable to understand the imaginative story. BWW Review: Holy Ogre! SHREK THE MUSICAL Is A Blast!
by Herbert Paine - Jul 20, 2016

Arizona Broadway Theatre's staging of SHREK THE MUSICAL exceeds expectations. Mace Archer has gone beyond the norm, directing something more than a lively and exhilarating show. He's fashioned a distinctive and incredibly intimate and engaging experience that speaks with authenticity to audience members young and older. Archer is aided and abetted in this theatrical coup by a gangbuster cast, featuring the awesome foursome of Jason Simon as the 'big stupid ugly ogre,' Liz Fallon as Fiona, Deonte Warren as Donkey, and David Brumfield as Lord Farquaad. BWW Review: Lush, Untranslated, and Disorienting: THE WEDDING GIFT at CATF
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 18, 2016

We watch as Doug takes stock of his situation, recognizes the failure of vision on the part of his captors, their inability to see him as a fellow-human, and recognizes what this means in terms of his power and his lack of power. BWW Review: Powerful Political and Historical Tension in ACT's World Premiere DAISY
by Jay Irwin - Jul 18, 2016

In our current political climate where candidates regularly hurl insults at each other on things such as penis size it's hard to remember that politics used to be about the candidate's stand on issues as well. So when did that change? When did we go from building up our own candidate in an ad to tearing down the other candidate with scandal, derision and fear? ACT might have the answer to that with their world premiere play "Daisy" that takes a look into the creation of one of the most infamous political ads and one of the first attack ads ever created. BWW Review: Smoothly Revised RECORDED IN HOLLYWOOD Returns to LA at Kirk Douglas Theatre
by Don Grigware - Jul 18, 2016

The name of the game in show biz is never to settle for greatness, but rather to go that extra mile and make it better. Such is the case with Recorded in Hollywood. In its transferal from a smaller Hollywood space to the Kirk Douglas Theatre,  the show provides a book by Matt Donnelly and Jamelle Dolphin that opens up even more than before to tell the true story of record producer John Dolphin. The story takes place from 1948 to 1958 in South Central, Los Angeles, when blacks were arrested for the slightest infractions of the law. Since I did not see the initial production, I am basing my opinions on this newer version. It is slick, a very slick show with a dynamic, triple threat ensemble headed by Stu James, directed superbly by Denise Dowse and choreographed to the max by Cassie Crump. The bad feature is that it only runs through August 7. (more...)

BWW Review: The MUNY's Hilarious Production of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
by Chris Gibson - Jul 17, 2016

I grew up looking forward to the weekend, because that's when channel 30 would broadcast 'Chiller Theater', providing a burgeoning horror fan like myself with the chance to view all the creepy classics that sprang from the loins of Universal Studios during the 1930's and 40's. I was a preteen when YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN played at the Westport cinema for a year! Yeah, movies used to actually do that. So, it was a genuine treat to see one of my favorite monsters lovingly parodied by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. And, it was with much anticipation that I looked forward to seeing the musical version of this beloved comedy from my childhood on the grand stage of The Muny. I think it's an extremely entertaining show, filled with a plethora of familiar gags, as well as some outstanding performances. This well cast and delightfully staged production is full of gorgeously spooky scenery and fun musical numbers, and I highly recommend that everyone catch this particular presentation, because it's far and away more humorous and spirited than the touring show that came through several years ago. BWW Interview: MONSTAH BLACK, The Interview. Part II
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 14, 2016

Well, yeah. I guess I am self-made. Because - thinking in terms of what my goals have been all my life - I've had very specific ideas around what I've wanted to do since I was about three. I can remember back to the day, the time of day, what I was doing, when the light bulb went off and I said to myself, "That's what I want to do." I pretty much focused on that. I said it on that day and I've gotten to the point where I'm in the middle of it happening. It's hinting towards what I see, what my goals have been. But it's not out of reach. It could happen. It's just a matter of putting the time into that and making it happen. It has happened already and now it's about allowing it to happen again and maybe getting more exposure to let it expand. My earliest inspiration is pretty much what helped shape myself into what I am. I can pinpoint who those people are and at some point I allowed it to… I let those landmarks inspire, I held onto them, and continued to step forward as the man. But it pretty much started with the Sonny and Cher show. (more...)

BWW Review: K ARTS BALLET Sets A New Standard for Excellence
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 13, 2016

The maxim 'Go big or go home' holds. That's one thing that can be said for Korea National University of Art's 'K Arts; Rising Stars of Korea Gala': they dance big; Bolshoi big. The leg extensions were never below 9 o'clock and more often than not floated past 12 o'clock; the pirouettes were never fewer than two and frequently zoomed from three to six; the grand jetes soared with clean splits every single time; and the manner always roared 'I LOVE TO DANCE AND I LOVE YOU TOO'! BWW Review: MTW Delivers Great Big Stuff with DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
by Don Grigware - Jul 12, 2016

Based on a 1980s film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is terribly silly and much of the dialogue & lyrics imbued with an overabundance of sexual innuendos, but that's AOK, as this is not Stephen Sondheim, but a jazzy, feel good, laugh out loud type of show. As many times as I've seen it, I always fall directly into the most audience I'm hooked, especially if the two male leads are properly cast. In this new production at MTW, Davis Gaines plays Lawrence Jamison, the king of cons, and could not be more perfect. At his side is Benjamin Schrader as Freddy Benson, the rubber-faced comedic schmuck who pleads with Jamison to take him on and teach him the ropes, the tricks of the trade. These two head up a glorious cast under the uber skilled direction'choreography of Billy Sprague Jr., and what results is a triumphant hit for MTW... through July 24 only. (more...)

BWW Review: Sweet BIG FISH at Taproot Lacks Power
by Jay Irwin - Jul 11, 2016

Back in 2013 Andrew Lippa sent his latest work off to Broadway. "Big Fish", based on the movie of the same name, was sure to be a big hit. But for some reason this sweet little tuner failed to catch fire and closed in just under 4 months. Sadly with such a tepid reception no tour of the show was ever planned so the only way anyone would see this lovely show would be a regional production. Fortunately we currently have one of those for "Big Fish" at Taproot Theatre. Unfortunately, while there's plenty of talent in the show, one of the leads wasn't quite up to the task vocally and for a big, ballad laden musical that can be deadly. (more...)
