BWW Review: Wilbury Theatre Group's Meandering JERUSALEM
by Andria Tieman - May 24, 2016

Wilbury Theatre Group closes out their 2015-2016 season with JERUSALEM by Jez Butterworth.  It's a skillfully directed production with a few standout performances, but unfortunately is bogged down by an overlong story that doesn't deliver much tension until after the two hour mark and suffers from some clumsy accent work.  It's an ambitious project for the Wilbury group to take on, and the sets and costumes are absolutely perfect for the story, unfortunately the source material is the main problem and its cliche' plot and incredibly slow pacing just never really deliver. Stephen Sondheim's Assassins - his musical treatment of the history of presidential assassinations in America - remains one of the most compelling and intriguing works to be found in the musical theater canon, focusing on a veritable rogue's gallery of historic figures whose infamy lives on decades after their horrific actions first gained them the notoriety they so often pursued in their disparate, yet somehow weirdly connected, lives. BWW Review: Theatrical Wonders of Wonder Appear in MKE Ballet's Astonishing ALICE
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - May 20, 2016

If ever a story captured the wonder of childhood dreams and fantasies, then Lewis Carroll's novel 'Alice's Adventures In Wonderland' travels to this hidden places in the heart and mind. Milwaukee Ballet's absolutely astonishing production of Alice (in wonderland) transports Carroll's magical stories to the stage in captivating theatrical style. Septime Webre's choreography, Liz Vandal's concept and costume design, James Kronzer's scenic design and Clifton Taylor's lighting design recreate Carroll's surreal world with those wonders of wonders completely intact. A ballet conceived for The Washington Ballet in 2012, Artistic Director Michael Pink imported the lush, full length ballet for his brilliant company, the Ballet Program II and students of the Milwaukee Ballet School and Academy. The Cell, where Duke City Repertory is performing this show, is just two blocks from the Central nightclub strip full of young people.  Can that crowd please attend the theater too?  Tickets are less expensive than a couple drinks, and there's catharsis instead of a hangover. BWW Review: Shaking the Family Tree of POOR HERMAN Melville
by Frank Benge - May 18, 2016

In his lifetime, Herman Melville was considered a failure. Melville was a novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. His work was almost forgotten during the last thirty years of his life. Today, he is best known for his whaling novel Moby-Dick. His first book, Typee, a romanticized tale of life among Polynesians, was a best-seller that was followed by the sequel, Omoo. His novel Pierre: or, The Ambiguities was a failure, reviled by critics and to this day considered basically unreadable. Melville's career never recovered from it. It is the period after Moby-Dick that forms the basis of POOR HERMAN, a new play by Elisabeth Doss, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Herman Melville. (more...)
