BWW Reviews: Actress/Singer CANDI MILO Slays at the FederalBWW Reviews: Actress/Singer CANDI MILO Slays at the Federal
by Don Grigware - Jun 30, 2015

On Sunday June 28, actress/singer Candi Milo brought her one.of.a.kind comedic cabaret to Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal and boy, oh boy, is she funny. 'How funny?' you may query. This little lady grew up in a mental institution - well, her father ran one in their home, so she was exposed to craziness at a tender age...and on top of that, she's Italian...and a voice-over artist who does many, many cartoon voices to amazing perfection, starting with Sweetie Pie. She was also a member of 'The Mighty Carson Art Players' on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. What fabulous improvisational training! So it's no surprise that the lady knows how to get a laugh. Humor comes gushing out of her the minute she opens her mouth, and it's never forced. It's all natural and with a multitude of sarcastic asides, it works deliciously on a cabaret stage. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Classical Actors Ensemble's TWO GENTLEMAN OF VERONA is Shakespeare As It's Intended - Playful, Energetic, Immediate, and Outdoors!BWW Reviews: Classical Actors Ensemble's TWO GENTLEMAN OF VERONA is Shakespeare As It's Intended - Playful, Energetic, Immediate, and Outdoors!
by Jill Schafer - Jun 28, 2015

The best thing about living in Minnesota is: a) theater, and b) lakes. Combine those two, and you have about as perfect of a Minnesota experience as you can have. Classical Actors Ensemble is presenting Shakespeare's comedy TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA at Lake of the Isles (and other select locations) this summer. I saw the matinee yesterday, and it was a lovely way to spend a picture perfect Minnesota summer afternoon. The show is utterly charming, and something about doing it outdoors in a public space makes Shakespeare seem more immediate, natural, and real, like this is a story that's happening in our world here and now. I sometimes have a hard time getting into Shakespeare, but this company makes it extremely accessible and so easy to become engaged in the stories, characters, and Shakespeare's beautiful words, which sound modern and fresh in this context. Their mission is: 'Classical Actors Ensemble is dedicated to engaging audiences by capturing the spirit in which plays of the English Renaissance were originally performed - with immediacy, passion, and as popular entertainment.' Mission accomplished. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Take a Swim With Ariel in THE LITTLE MERMAIDBWW Reviews: Take a Swim With Ariel in THE LITTLE MERMAID
by Amanda Finn - Jun 27, 2015

One little swish of her tail and they were smitten. The girls who grew up admiring Ariel and humming her tunes can now have the same giddy feeling they used to get when that well-worn VHS slid into the machine. With the incomparable success of The Lion King, Disney set out to create its fair share of Broadway blockbusters. The Little Mermaid had a short lived run on the Great White Way, but that hasn't stopped other companies from having their go at a show with a lot to give. (more...)

BWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa MananaBWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa Manana
by Kyle West - Jun 25, 2015

My first experience with LES MISERABLES was in 1996, as a tween performing in my school's musical review. While most other kids learned the material and moved on, I saved my pennies for the cast recording, memorizing the show word-for-word. After moving to New York in 2004, my work provided me with virtually unlimited tickets to the city's hottest shows. By the time LES MISERABLES returned to Broadway (in 2006, with a carbon-copy revival of the original production that had closed three years previously), I was a jaded New York twenty-something, no longer inspired by the 'tourist trap' hits. Then, as I sat in the darkened Broadhurst Theatre, the turntable moved, and I realized I was watching an unparalleled piece of theatre history. (more...)

The Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada FortressThe Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada Fortress
by Richard Sasanow - Jun 25, 2015

At an hour-and-a-half's drive, the historic citadel at Masada--the mountain fortress in Israel's Judean Desert--is close enough to visit from Jerusalem as part of a pilgrimage or other tourism adventure. For visitors to the Israeli Opera Festival, held at the foot of Masada, the better idea may be to stay at one of the Dead Sea hotels, so that when you're not taking in your cultural fix, you can take in some local mud, float in the 33% salt water, contemplate Jordan on the opposite side of the sea, or simply bask in the sun at the lowest place on earth. BWW Reviews: Good People's MARRY ME A LITTLE Takes Pleasingly Gentle Approach with Sondheim RevueBWW Reviews: Good People's MARRY ME A LITTLE Takes Pleasingly Gentle Approach with Sondheim Revue
by Don Grigware - Jun 22, 2015

During the crazy broohaha of the Hollywood Fringe Festival, there are plenty of loud, over.the.top noisy shows, if that suits your pleasure. Sondheim's Marry Me a Little is a quiet, gentle little 60-minute musical revue that just doesn't fit that bill. And that's totally fine by me! I prefer Sondheim anyway. In Marry Me a Little, conceived by Craig Lucas and Norman Rene, many of the songs are from the then - late 90s - unproduced Saturday Night coupled with a multitude of songs cut from hits like Company, Follies, A Little Night Music and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. It's a two-person intimate show on the vast Lillian stage and as usual Janet Miller has staged the piece adeptly with lots of tender loving care. (more...)

BWW Reviews: CORINNA SOWERS-ADLER Holds to Her Own 'High Standards' with a Show By the Same Name at Metropolitan RoomBWW Reviews: CORINNA SOWERS-ADLER Holds to Her Own 'High Standards' with a Show By the Same Name at Metropolitan Room
by Alix Cohen - Jun 22, 2015

As she wends her way towards the stage at the opening of her new show at the Metropolitan Room (performances were on June 15 and 20), Corinna Sowers Adler sings the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II classic “All The Things You Are” with warm, legato phrases that surround the club like a hug. Sowers Adler achieves this not only with her singing, but also the friendly and personal nature of her bridging dialogue. In High Standards, she manages to make us feel privy to an authentic self without a lot of in-jokes intended for attending friends and family. The standards to which this show's title refers are not only those evergreen numbers collected in The Great American Song Book, but also yardsticks by which we measure quality and value in life. BWW Reviews: Shakespeare's MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR Blooms with Summer Magic at APTBWW Reviews: Shakespeare's MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR Blooms with Summer Magic at APT
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Jun 22, 2015

'The flower of the garter blooms for every Windsor heart.' So sings the American Player Theatre cast when Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor arrives to open the Up The Hill Theatre season. These beloved characters celebrate 'The Most Noble Order of the Garter' ceremony, which APT stages similar to an early 20th century American Independence day celebration only with English patriotism---summer entertainment costumed by Holly Payne complemented by Nathan Stuber's scenic design. BWW Reviews: BAD JEWS a Riotous Dramedy at the GeffenBWW Reviews: BAD JEWS a Riotous Dramedy at the Geffen
by Don Grigware - Jun 19, 2015

Excessively harsh reality is at the core of most current popular dramedies as it is on television. A character cannot be rude or abrasive enough to arouse a viewer's attention or glean laughs. It's particularly characteristic of the irritating females who talk too fast, too loud and scream their shrewish lungs out. It makes me happy that I live alone; and yes, I do care and respect others and their feelings; but, being pleasant nowadays is considered boring and in drama, it will never win awards, so on with the show. In Joshua Harmon's Bad Jews currently onstage at the Geffen Playhouse there is such a character Daphna (Molly Ephraim), Hebrew for Diana, who with her two cousins Jonah (Raviv Ullman) and Liam (Ari Brand) are in New York to pay homage to their dead grandfather, their beloved Poppy, a Holocaust survivor. Daphna is referred to by Liam as a super Jew. (more...)

by Barnett Serchuk - Jun 19, 2015

Yehuda Hyman's 'Mar Vista (Spanish for 'view of the sea') is a presentation of his Mystical Feet Company, a warm and poignant remembrance of his parents, two seemingly mismatched misfits who found each other. I wasn't sure what to expect when I entered the 14th Street Y on Sunday, June 14, 2015, but I came away pleasantly surprised. What I expected to be an over-the-top evening of raw emotions turned out to be a passageway to the heart of one very special individual, namely Yehuda Hyman (more...)

Director and designer Colton Berry brings a solid artistic vision to Bayou City Theatrics staging of SUNSET BOULEVARD, but his conceptualizations remain better than the execution. SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Thoughtful Wishes For CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURESOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Thoughtful Wishes For CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURE
by Pat Cerasaro - Jun 17, 2015

Last night, acclaimed director Todd Graff unexpectedly announced plans to film a follow-up to 2003 cult favorite theatre-themed movie musical CAMP titled CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURE set to feature fellow Tony Award-winning icons Patti LuPone and Donna Murphy, among others, inspiring Broadway babies to excitedly anticipate the many musical selections that could potentially be presented as part of the project. Of course, the original film famously featured a young Anna Kendrick memorably belting out the COMPANY 11 o'clocker 'The Ladies Who Lunch' in addiiton to an unforgettable recreation of the original Michael Bennett-staged mini masterpiece from PROMISES, PROMISES, 'Turkey Lurkey Time' - plus some standout original tunes by the likes of Michael Gore and Lynn Ahrens, too - not to mention Stephen Sondheim himself appearing onscreen in a cameo role. Now, Graff himself promises at least one showstopper to match the ones in the first film, relaying, 'We're going to introduce some fabulous new additions, like Donna Murphy, Patti LuPone and a bevy of other reigning Broadway divas performing a demented version of 'Steppin' To The Bad Side' from DREAMGIRLS to be staged by the one and only Jerry Mitchell.' So, now, let's speculate on some must-see moments we would relish seeing onscreen in the sequel. (more...)
