There's nothing like a good musical revue - replete with well-chosen songs, performed by a talented coterie of professional performers who are ably supported by a cast of fresh-faced youngsters showing off their burgeoning talents in concert with their more seasoned counterparts - and The Collective (Nashville's newest theatrical endeavor aka The Music City Theatre Collective) certainly delivers the goods with the debut of Showstoppers, presented this weekend at St. Philip's Episcopal Church's Dimmick Hall in Donelson. BWW Review: Mad Cow's Biting Comedy, ART, Makes You Question Nature of FriendshipBWW Review: Mad Cow's Biting Comedy, ART, Makes You Question Nature of Friendship
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 29, 2016

Do you have a prized piece of art hanging above the mantle in your home? Above the sofa? In your bedroom? What does the choice to invest in a particular work of art say about you? What does your best friend's choice in art say about him or her? Does your friend's choice say something about you? These seemingly frivolous questions lead to a series of dramatic confrontations in Yasmina Reza's biting comedy ART, playing now at Church Street's Mad Cow Theatre through February 21st. Originally written in French, and translated by Christopher Hampton, the play, which won the 1998 Tony for Best Play, is a break-neck exploration of the nature of friendship, and how seemingly unimportant decisions can destroy decades of love and trust. BWW Review: MATILDA THE MUSICAL Dazzles in NashvilleBWW Review: MATILDA THE MUSICAL Dazzles in Nashville
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jan 28, 2016

Can there be a better way to capture Matilda's spirit so evocatively than in a sparkling new work for the musical theater? A musical journey through which we can chart her soulful, heartfelt ascent into a literary hierarchy in which readers can live vicariously? Matilda's forays into a fictional world of devil-may-care adventure, oftentimes aided by her gift for telekinesis or her penchant for clever tricks (like switching her father's hair oil with her mother's peroxide) - which is at once darker than other offerings of like ilk, yet somehow rather more confectionary than even the fluffiest of musical comedies - lend themselves exquisitely to Matilda the Musical, the critically lauded stage extravaganza that is somehow effervescently uplifting while remaining grounded. by David Green - Jan 26, 2016

Before I even begin my review of SUICIDE DOGS, which opened last Friday evening in Palm Springs for a limited two week run, I want to give Dezart Performs a standing ovation. Dezart Performs is dedicated to the development of new theatrical works, providing a safe haven for new plays and giving voice to burgeoning playwrights at all stages — from table readings to staged readings and, for some, full blown productions. And that effort and commitment is to be applauded and rewarded. Rewarded, how? By getting into the theatre and supporting this vibrant theatre company as they showcase these new works, and providing the authors the vital “next step” in their process — the critical eye of a live audience. I urge you to put Dezart Performs squarely on your radar — both their mission and the professional quality of their work deserve an audience!! (more...)

BWW Review: Stellar Ensemble Soars in Wilbury Group's Fantastic STUPID F#%*ING BIRDBWW Review: Stellar Ensemble Soars in Wilbury Group's Fantastic STUPID F#%*ING BIRD
by Robert Barossi - Jan 26, 2016

There's a moment in the play Stupid F#%*ing Bird, currently playing at The Wilbury Group, where a character talks about how contemporary theaters adapt and reimagine Shakespeare. Certainly, it's always a tricky proposition, reconfiguring a classic work and attempting to bring it into the current era while maintaining all the aspects, themes and characteristics that made it great. Or, at least, finding a way to reshape it so it will hold up in front of today's audiences, keeping them engaged and entertained within of our modern-day context. As written by Aaron Posner, adapted from the classic Anton Chekhov play The Seagull, Bird is a play that more than holds its own as a thought provoking, entertaining and hilarious modern take on a theatrical classic. Sometimes, the Metropolitan Opera seems like an endless Puccini festival. It's particularly apparent this season, when top dogs LA BOHEME, TOSCA and MADAMA BUTTERFLY are joined by TURANDOT and MANON LESCAUT, which are not second drawer, though certainly less popular than the first three. by Michael L. Quintos - Jan 21, 2016

While certainly far from a perfect show (both in staging and execution), the bus-and-truck version of BULLETS OVER BROADWAY - THE MUSICAL---the quirky and highly-amusing stage musical adaptation of the 1994 big screen comedy penned by Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath---is nonetheless a supremely fun and engaging stage iteration had me in stitches for much of its two hilarious acts, which have been enhanced by lots of silly, old-fashioned antics and an array of surprisingly top-notch musical/acting performances from a solid, mostly young cast. I can honestly say that this production---now finishing up its Los Angeles premiere performances at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood through January 24---is quite possibly the most enjoyable non-equity first national tour I've watched in a long, long time---a wonderful surprise considering such enterprises have a long, contentious history of enticing lots of industry controversy and skepticism even before the curtain goes up. As he interviews the people from Leonard's life, Lecesne transforms himself into each of them with a quick turn of his body, completely changing his voice and physicality as be morphs from male to female, young to old. Now onstage by the Aerospace Players through February 6, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN tells the story of sharpshooter Annie Oakley (Julie Hinton, a natural comedienne who perfectly inhabits the role) and her romance with Frank Butler (Stephen Cathers). Unfortunately, Cathers has no chemistry whatsoever with Hinton, and try as she might to entice him, their romance seems implausible and totally unbelievable. Without two solid leads who really appear to be in love, or at least attracted to each other physically, the musical lacks the spark needed to fuel the plot. (more...)
