BWW Review: LETTERS FROM A NUT Spotlights the Humorous Book Series by Ted L. Nancy
by Shari Barrett - Jun 30, 2017

Have you noticed how on most packaging, there is a short statement asking you to please write or call with any questions or concerns about the product you have purchased? That fact came to the attention of author Ted L. Nancy (aka Barry Marder) when he was eating a bag of Fritos while watching television in the middle of the night. Figuring it might be fun to write to the company to see if he would get a response began his career writing absurd correspondence as a customer in need of customer service. Nancy brings his madcap collection of correspondence to the Geffen stage for a one-of-a-kind show that is both outlandish and uproarious. (more...)

BWW Review: Lyric Theatre's MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Is A Rock-n-Roll Hit You Can Bank On
by Ronn Burton - Jun 28, 2017

Lyric Theatre kicks off its summer season with this rollicking concert of golden oldies - the finale medley alone is worth the price of admission, but Lyric's production serves up nearly two hours worth of your favorite songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis. Tried-and-true hits like "Blue Suede Shoes", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Fever", "Hound Dog" and many more each get their moment in the spotlight. These performers are musicians first and foremost, and it shows. Yet none of them fall into the trap of impersonations…each actor brings his character to life with a crisp vitality that keeps the show nimble and appealing. (more...)

BWW Review: Sprightly and Sparkling Moliere's LEARNED LADIES at TAM
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Jul 8, 2017

Four hundred and forty-five years later French playwright Moliere still bubbles with joyous, effervescent, sometimes mordant wit, and it is just this sparkle that Theater at Monmouth's new production of The Learned Ladies serves up in generous, exuberant fashion in an elegantly translated (uncredited), briskly performed, hugely witty comedy of manners about the affectations of a group of philosophy-loving women and the gender politics of their world. BWW Review: KB Productions' THE WATER'S EDGE by Theresa Rebeck
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jul 5, 2017

Performed amid a gorgeous, bucolic setting, the latest offering from Nashville's KB Productions - a retelling of Theresa Rebeck's Greek tragedy cum American family drama The Water's Edge - is performed upon what may be the most detailed, stunningly conceived and beautifully realized set ever seen on the stage of the iconic Darkhorse Theater. Designed by director Jaymes Campbell and crafted by a construction crew led by Joe Stinemetz, it provides an evocative backdrop for the action (or lack thereof) in Rebeck's much-maligned play, ideally capturing the physical trappings of a somewhat down-on-its-heels lakeside cottage where tragedy lurks behind every tree. BWW Review: Alhambra Dinner Theatre presents ANNIE
by Heather Vollman - Jul 5, 2017

ANNIE opened at The Alhambra Dinner Theatre last week to a house full of excited young ladies, local theatre lovers, and even those who aren't as familiar with the Jacksonville theatre scene, as the timelessly successful musical tends to draw large crowds who know every song from childhood. With iconic characters, familiar scenery, and a Tony Award winning score, a fellow directing friend from my past once said, "It's really hard to mess this one up," and I tend to agree. There are several elements of this production that left me disappointed, however, the overarching themes and values, along with several outstanding performances, are endearing and inspiring. BWW Review: HIGH SOCIETY at SBCC Theatre Group
by Maggie Yates - Jul 21, 2017

While concepts in High Society may have been viewed as 'kitschy' when the play premiered two decades ago, in the age of Instagram stars and The Real Housewives, these characters, who are charming in their relative innocence as compared to the shameless celebrities of the information age (even our president is a faux-lebrity real estate mogul-turned-reality show host), seem tame. High Society is a pleasant enough way to spend an evening, but it doesn't really go anywhere. There are no risks, no extraordinary thrills: just a very safe presentation of feel-good music from a bygone era. (more...)

BWW Review: Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva's Dazzling and Stunning Billie Holiday Can't Be Missed
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jul 17, 2017

Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva's miraculous transformation into music legend Billie Holiday may well be the performance of 2017, theater-wise, in a city where we revere and venerate our favorite vocalists. But in Music City, where live theater is often perceived as a mere afterthought by the entertainment establishment, oftentimes performances such as hers may be given short shrift, overlooked by the so-called powers-that-be whose tastes tend toward the middle of the road, pop-infused, sound-like-everyone else, cookie cutter variety of singers. BBW Reviews: THE NORMAL HEART Highlights a community's struggle at The City Theatre
by Amy Bradley - Jul 13, 2017

The City Theatre Company presents Larry Kramer's THE NORMAL HEART, with compassion and care to the tragic subject matter. This mostly autobiographical tale from Kramer, shines a light on the HIV crisis that hit the gay community in New York City in the early eighties. With the horrifying illness gaining steam, and compounded by little to no cooperation from the community at large, the newly liberated 'gay movement' was stonewalled and devastated by the effects of the AIDS virus. To tell the story of his own experience during this plague, Larry Kramer puts his experiences to paper to share the heart-wrenching realities many homosexual communities faced during this time. At the helm of the activism is an outspoken, abrasive crusader Ned Weeks (a self-reflection of Larry Kramer). THE NORMAL HEART begins in a hospital waiting room with a few young men trading quips back and forth that all will be well. Within minutes, we discover all is not well, and the true villain of the show, the HIV virus, is about to take center stage in these happy young men's lives. Weeks is adamant about finding help for his crusade and passionately tells his fellow peers to "button it up" for the time being. The timeline of the show follows the rising death toll of the AIDS virus from all over the world. As events escalate, Ned's personal relationships fall victim to his passionate and outlandish tactics in seeking support for their cause. The reflection and passion written by Kramer is nothing shy of breath-taking. With an emphasis on awareness and education, THE NORMAL HEART stays relevant and interesting for the present-day theatre-goer. (more...)

BWW Review: Douglas Carter Beane's New Musical HOOD at Dallas Theater Center

Not every new musical can be a HAMILTON, but that's exactly what makes the eclectic genre of American musical theatre thrive and bloom. However, there are a few necessary, key ingredients in creating musical theatre magic, including relatable principal characters and some heartfelt showtunes. And, although Dallas Theater Center's efforts to produce an edgy new musical based on the Robin Hood folklore don't ever get past the surface of the legendary story, there's still something irresistible about being in the room where a new work is being created.
