BWW Reviews: Act II Playhouse Presents a Ferociously Funny UNNECESSARY FARCEBWW Reviews: Act II Playhouse Presents a Ferociously Funny UNNECESSARY FARCE
by Kelli Curtin - Mar 3, 2015

Act II Playhouse's production of UNNECESSARY FARCE by Paul Smith Slade is boisterous, funny, chaotic and a wonderfully done farce. According to a press release from Act II Playhouse, this show has 'Two Cops. Three Crooks. Eight Doors. One Killer in a Kilt.' Without giving too much away, this show is about an undercover cop and a rookie cop who are prepared to take down a corrupt mayor, but just like in any good farce, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. UNNECESSARY FARCE at Act II Playhouse is a delightfully amusing show that will have audiences laughing throughout the show. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Ocean State Theatre's THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a Tale of Two MusicalsBWW Reviews: Ocean State Theatre's THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a Tale of Two Musicals
by Robert Barossi - Feb 28, 2015

Coincidentally, Ocean State Theatre Company happens to be presenting back-to-back productions which are two-person shows. The first one, The Meeting, was a serious drama depicting the fictional meeting between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. The second one is their current production of a much different show, the musical love story, The Last Five Years. While the first one had a noticeable but minor difference in the charisma and stage presence of its two performers, the second one is an example of just how obviously wide that gap can become and just how much the difference between its two leads can impact a production. BWW Reviews: Wilbury Group Showcases New Works with ROADHOUSE: THE MUSICALBWW Reviews: Wilbury Group Showcases New Works with ROADHOUSE: THE MUSICAL
by Robert Barossi - Feb 27, 2015

For theater aritsts and theater lovers, few things compare to watching the genesis of a new piece of theater. The creation and development of a new work, from initial staged readings and workshops to final performance, is a thrilling process. Of course, there are many steps along the way and not all of them are successful. Not every aspect of the play found in the first version of the script will make it to the final version. Not every beloved moment or great-idea-at-the-time will end up making the grade when all is said and done. Still, it's a process that is vital to the present and future of theater. Vital because new blood and new life must be created and injected into the theatrical world and it's up to theater artists everywhere to make sure that happens. In our region, one of the companies doing just that is The Wilbury Group, currently presenting the second iteration of a new work, Roadhouse: The Musical. (more...)

Sometimes a little retooling and freshening up of an old classic isn't such a bad thing. I mean I was a little dubious when I heard they were remounting the classic of "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella" especially when I heard it was getting an all new book. But the tour of this new version still keeps all the magic and charm alive while adding in some humor and elements that just make the characters all the more rich and engaging. (more...)

BWW Review: Orlando Shakespeare Goes unto the Breach with Masterful HENRY VBWW Review: Orlando Shakespeare Goes unto the Breach with Masterful HENRY V
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 25, 2015

One of the great benefits of having a professional Shakespeare company in town is that they are able to invest in productions of some of the Bard's works that don't often get produced at traditional theatres. While Orlando Shakespeare certainly produces great plays not found in the First Folio, the fact that they are able to bring performances of shows like TITUS ANDRONICUS, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, and PERICLES to the stage is a tremendous boon for Central Florida theatre fans. Productions of HAMLET, ROMEO AND JULIET, the Scottish Play, and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM will never go out of style, but it is truly special when you are able to attend an artistically satisfying production of one of Shakespeare's lesser seen works; like the masterful HENRY V, running through March 22nd at Orlando Shakespeare.
