All Star Productions Opens DAYS OF HOPE Tonight

DAYS OF HOPE is set in Spain in 1939, in the dying moments of the Spanish Civil War. The story begins with a family celebrating the marriage of the daughter, Sofia, to an English volunteer, but the wedding meal is tinged with anger at Franco and his fascists. They plan to escape that night to England with Sofia's groom, Stanley, but before the plan is executed, various visitors over the course of the evening bring different perspectives upon their condemnation of Franco, of Mussolini and Hitler for their intervention, and of Britain's non-intervention… The family ends up being torn apart, trying to decide whether to flee or stay and fight. Hosted by Ted Chapin, the evening will highlight songs from Venus as well as favorites from other Weill shows, including Street Scene, Lady in the Dark, Love Life, Lost in the Stars, Knickerbocker Holiday, The Threepenny Opera, and Happy End. Alley Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Boyd announces the cast and creative team for Alan Ayckbourn's science fiction comedy Communicating Doors. Eleven plays penned by Alan Ayckbourn have been produced by the Alley, including the American premiere of Henceforward, directed by Ayckbourn, in 1987 and House & Garden in 2002. Alan Ayckbourn has been inducted into the American Theatre's Hall of Fame, received the 2010 Critics' Circle Award for Services to the Arts, became the first British playwright to receive both Olivier and Tony Special Lifetime Achievement Awards and was knighted in 1997 for services to the theatre. Jay Records, with the support of The Kurt Weill Foundation, digitally released the first complete recording of composer Kurt Weill and lyricist Ogden Nash's score to the 1943 musical One Touch of Venus on October 7, 2013, and the sterling recording had its physical CD release on May 13, 2014. Originally announced over ten years ago, fans eagerly anticipated the album for years. Luckily for us listeners, the recording was well worth the wait. (more...)

Pontine Theatre continues its 3-event Cafe-Lyceum Series with Pretty Halcyon Days: On the Beach with Ogden Nash. Pontine's Cafe-Lyceums feature refreshments and conversation along with scenes from one of Pontine Theatre's popular original plays based on New England literature. Pretty Halcyon Days is based on the life and work of "America's Master of Light Verse." Ogden Nash and his family spent their summers on Little Boar's Head, in North Hampton, NH. Using examples from Pontine's original staging of his poems, this program explores the ways in which Nash's life on the New Hampshire seashore influenced his poetry, lending insight into the man, his character, and his ideas about family, society, and nature. York Theatre Company Extends INVENTING MARY MARTIN Through 5/25

Due to popular demand, The York Theatre Company has announced a one-week extension of the world premiere production of the new musical revue, Inventing Mary Martin, that will now play through Sunday afternoon, May 25, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at The York Theatre Company's home at Saint Peter's (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue) where performances began earlier this week on April 15. The York Theatre Company continues its 2013-2014 season with the world premiere of the new musical, Inventing Mary Martin, conceived, written and directed by Stephen Cole, with music supervision and arrangements by David Krane, music direction by Lawrence Goldberg, co-directed and choreographed by Bob Richard, and original music and lyrics by legendary composers Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein, Vernon Duke & Howard Dietz, Kurt Weill & Ogden Nash, Noel Coward, Irving Berlin, Jule Styne & Carolyn Leigh, Howard Dietz & Arthur Schwartz, and Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt, among others.
