The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut is currently featuring ground-breaking modernist performance sculptures first designed by famed Connecticut sculptor Alexander Calder for the 1936 production of Socrate at Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum, as part of its current exhibition, American Puppet Modernism: The Early 20th Century, on display Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., now through July 1 at the Ballard Institute, located at 1 Royce Circle in Downtown Storrs. The sculptures were reconstructed with Calder's approval for a 1976 performance of Socrate produced by conductor Joel Thome, the director of the Orchestra of Our Time, as part of the National Tribute to Alexander Calder in New York City.

The Uptown Underground, 4707 N. Broadway, is open for business as of Valentine's Day weekend after a lengthy dispute with the city and state over the art form of burlesque and the sale of liquor. Originally slated to open on New Year's Eve 2014, the Uptown Underground features retro-entertainment, cabaret, comedy, magic, burlesque and jazz, and is the new home of the long-running weekly hit The Kiss Kiss Cabaret. Jenn A. Kincaid and Chris O. Biddle are the co-owners of the Uptown Underground as well as co-producers of The Kiss Kiss Cabaret. Dramatists Guild Releases Statement on Making Unauthorized Revisions

Just last week, controversy erupted when TUTS Underground got caught presenting HANDS ON A HARDBODY, but with significant and unapproved changes to the show. The Huston-based Theatre was forced by theatrical licenser Samuel French, Inc. to cancel the rest of its run. Just days later, Milwaukee's Alchemist Theatre was forced to cancel its production of David Mamet's Oleanna after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Mamet's representatives because they cast a male actor in the play's lead female role.
