Eric L. Williams is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, who calls himself "an eternal student of his craft": acting. Most recently, he was onstage in Lakewood Theatre's production of The Outsiders, but he's also performed in a wide variety of works including Oedipus Rex, Jitney, The Dance on Widow's Row, Macbeth, Fool for Love and The Face of Emmett Till. Among other recent performances, he's had roles in Life to Come, Romeo and Juliet and Pulpits. What does it really mean to be a father? Absolutely nothing, at least according to The Myth of the Father, a new comedy written by Lawrence Hennessy and directed by Deb Barry, scheduled to run as a part of The Late-Night Series at the Players' Ring Theatre in Portsmouth from July 18 through July 27. Based on Hennessy's Doctoral Thesis of the same name, The Myth of the Father takes aim at the theory of, "essentialism," the idea that there are certain parental functions which can only be performed by men or women. But don't worry, whenever the temptation to be taken seriously arises, there is plenty of word play, satire, and slapstick to keep things ridiculous. (more...)

The Public Theater announced today that George Brant's spellbinding, ripped-from-the-headlines play GROUNDED, with Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway, has been added to the 2014-15 downtown season. Directed by Academy Award nominee and two-time Tony Award winner Julie Taymor, GROUNDED marks the return to the Public Theater stage for Hathaway who played Viola in the 2009 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night. GROUNDED will begin performances in the Anspacher Theater on Tuesday, April 7 and run through Sunday, May 17, with an official press opening on Thursday, April 23. (more...)

Stratford Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino has announced a season of Discovery for 2015 with 13 plays exploring eureka moments, whether they be scientific discoveries, creative accomplishments, the dawning of a deeper understanding of human nature or the epiphanies of self-knowledge. These themes, as they are reflected in art, science and our personal lives, will be further explored through more than 150 events at the Stratford Festival Forum. The 2015 season will also see a number of creative artists pursuing new work through the Stratford Festival Laboratory, Mr. Cimolino's centre for creative research and development, including adaptations of an early Urdu novel and a children's story, as well as a new approach to four of Shakespeare's history plays. Stravinsky's twentieth-century operatic masterpiece The Rake's Progress will return to the Met stage for a revival of three performances only, opening May 1 and continuing through May 9. Music Director James Levine leads the performances, with rising stars Paul Appleby and Layla Claire in the central roles of the carefree Tom Rakewell and his faithful sweetheart, Anne Trulove; Stephanie Blythe as Baba the Turk, the hot-tempered bearded lady whose life becomes entangled with Tom's; English bass Brindley Sherratt in his Met debut as Anne's father, Trulove; and Gerald Finley as Nick Shadow, the mysterious man who encourages Tom to trade respectability for a life of aimless pleasure.
