In this 2015 season of 'Magic, Murder, and Mayhem' Maine's Theater at Monmouth serves up a gripping adaptation of Henry James' familiar tale of psychological Gothic horror, The Turn of the Screw. The novella tells the story of a governess' battle to wrench her two young charges from the grasp of spirits who haunt their estate and to probe the dark secrets which exert a debilitating psychological hold on everyone at Bly. Adapted here by Jeffrey Hatcher as a two person drama in which one actor plays all the characters other than the governess, TAM's seventy-five minute production has a lean look and taut pace that rivet even an audience familiar with the work. MAST, now playing at Salvage Vanguard Theatre, is a new play by paper chairs co-founder and local playwright Elizabeth Doss. In its World Premiere staging, MAST tells the story of Ann (Katie Bender), a rancher's daughter working on an Air Force base outside Abilene, TX, where she meets Walter (Jesse Bertron), a journalist, and ends up unexpectedly conceiving a child, Michael (Sean Francis Moran), in the heat of wartime frenzy. They elope to the Dominican Republic, which is under the oppressive rule of Trujillo (Noel Gaulin). This is the place where Michael is born and where everything begins to unravel. Based on stories of her own mid-century Texas relatives that have been with playwright Elizabeth Doss for most of her life, MAST spans the decades of this family's life. (more...)

Elvis Presley – aka “The King,” Tupelo's most famous favorite son and Memphis' most revered musical icon – sure had a lot of music in his catalogue of hits, and it seems that almost  all of it is included in the score of All Shook Up, the jukebox musical now onstage at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre through August 30. There are so many songs, in fact, that opening night may have run longer than anticipated, yet those songs are so entertainingly performed and the show is so full of heart that you can't help but stick around until the end. The Old Globe's presentation of Kiss Me, Kate, the classic musical comedy featuring a book by Sam and Bella Spewack and an iconic score by Cole Porter, will now add a week by popular demand and run through August 9 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. On September 26, the Long Beach Playhouse opens its 87th Mainstage Season. This year's season is a celebration of authors and their finest works with classics including Pygmalion, The Mousetrap, A Raisin in the Sun and Around the World in 80 Days. The season opens with Lanford Wilson's comedy classic, Hot L Baltimore on September 26, 2015. The season curtain falls on August 6, 2016 with the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. In between are six plays, including a two-weekend run of A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. (more...)
