The Public Theater announced the line-up today for the 2015 FREE Shakespeare in the Park season, continuing a 53-year tradition of free theater in Central Park. Since 1962, over five million people have enjoyed more than 150 free productions of Shakespeare and other classical works and musicals at the Delacorte Theater. Conceived by founder Joe Papp as a way to make great theater accessible to all, The Public's free Shakespeare in the Park continues to be the bedrock of the Company's mission to increase access and engage the community. This summer, free Shakespeare in the Park will feature Shakespeare's late romances with THE TEMPEST (May 27-July 5), directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, and CYMBELINE (July 27-August 23), directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan. Inspired by the classic Victor Hugo novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame has a book by Peter Parnell, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Just days after we revealed that IF/THEN was set for the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles from December 8, 2015 to January 3, 2016, we can now report that it's official -- the show is going on tour! This morning, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts announced that the National Tour of IF/THEN, will launch in Denver in October 2015. Performances at The Buell Theatre begin October 13 and run through October 25. IF/THEN is part of the 2015/2016 Broadway season. (more...)

IF/THEN has just announced that it will have no performances January 27 - February 1 to accommodate Idina Menzel's rehearsal and travel schedule for her performance of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 1. Performances will resume on Tuesday, February 3. Ticket holders for performances January 27 - February 1 will be rescheduled into another performance. The Cleveland POPS Orchestra with conductor Carl Topilow will salute the Academy Awards for Music at Severance Hall on Friday February 6, 2015. The first half of the two-hour concert starts at 8:00 p.m. and will feature musical selections representing each of the eight decades in which songs and original scores for movies have been recognized by the Academy. The audience will experience, in order of decade, music from The Wizard of Oz (30's), Sea Hawk (40's), Ben Hur (50's) The Graduate (60's), The Godfather (70's), Amadeus (80's), Titanc (90's), and Lord of the Rings (00's). The second hour of the evening will feature a wide selection of songs and scores that were in contention for, but did not win the coveted golden statue - including Chicago, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, West Side Story, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, and more. Hard to believe I am beginning my 9th year as a writer for Broadwayworld.com. This has been a remarkable year in theater. This season I reviewed 37 plays and wrote nine other articles, classical reviews and promotion pieces for a total of 46. My visits included the following theaters: Everyman (7), Center Stage (6), Signature (5), Kennedy Center (4), Olney Theatre Center (3), Round House (2), Arena Stage (2), Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (2), Folger (1), Red Branch (1), and Ford's (1). There were two Baltimore Symphony events and the honoring of Jonathan Tunick with the Sondheim Award at the Signature Theatre. I enjoyed interviewing actors Michael Winther, Brynn O'Malley, and Choreographer Janet Rothermel. (more...)

Composer-Lyricist-Bookwriter Mary Liz McNamara is currently working on Body and Soul based on the 2009 documentary by filmmaker Alice Elliott. Excerpts from Body and Soul were seen at New York Theater Barn in October 2014. Awards: 2013 Bistro Award for Songwriting, 2011 BMI Foundation Harrington Award for creative achievement in musical theater, two MAC awards and six ASCAP PLUS awards. Mary Liz is a frequent NYC performer, and her songs are performed by cabaret and musical theater artists across the country. She is a member of the BMI Musical Theater Workshop (as a composer/lyricist and a librettist), and about a million other performing arts unions and organizations. Her song 'Bacon' was used in an episode of 'So You Think You Can Dance.' (more...)
