by Barnett Serchuk - Jun 19, 2015

Yehuda Hyman's 'Mar Vista (Spanish for 'view of the sea') is a presentation of his Mystical Feet Company, a warm and poignant remembrance of his parents, two seemingly mismatched misfits who found each other. I wasn't sure what to expect when I entered the 14th Street Y on Sunday, June 14, 2015, but I came away pleasantly surprised. What I expected to be an over-the-top evening of raw emotions turned out to be a passageway to the heart of one very special individual, namely Yehuda Hyman (more...)

BWW Reviews: Stages St. Louis' Absolutely Delightful THE ARISTOCATSBWW Reviews: Stages St. Louis' Absolutely Delightful THE ARISTOCATS
by Chris Gibson - Jun 10, 2015

The feature length animated film, THE ARISTOCATS (1970), was the last project Walt Disney approved before his death in 1966. My son and I watched it several years ago on DVD, when he was just a little tyke. And then, in 2010 we attended Stages St. Louis' wonderful production of the show. Five years later I was little hesitant to bring him to their latest presentation, just because he's that much older, but I think he actually enjoyed it more the second time around. He's now at an age where he can really appreciate the work that goes into bringing these shows to the stage. He loved the performances and music, and so did I. Stages has put together an excellent show that, obviously, has appeal for kids of all ages (and adults as well), and it's currently gracing the stage of The Westport Playhouse. I think the intimacy of the venue acts to enhance the experience, bringing the audience that much closer to the action. (more...)

The Pacific Symphony Presents BEETHOVEN'S 'EMPEROR,' 5/7-9The Pacific Symphony Presents BEETHOVEN'S 'EMPEROR,' 5/7-9
by BWW News Desk - Apr 17, 2015

From simple beauty to dazzling grandeur, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor” requires extreme virtuosity from its soloist, making it an ideal centerpiece for Pacific Symphony's upcoming concert, “Beethoven's 'Emperor.'” Pianist Barry Douglas, gold medal winner at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, travels from Ireland to tackle this famous concerto under the direction of Grammy-winning guest conductor John Nelson. Nelson, a Costa Rican native, also leads the orchestra in a performance of Schumann's alternately broody and ebullient Symphony No. 2 in C Major, which was premiered in October 1846 under the direction of another well-known composer, Felix Mendelssohn. The Symphony opens the concert with Carl Maria von Weber's imaginative Overture to “Oberon,” an opera of magic and elves. (more...)

Here is some information about the title: $15, 6X9?, 74pp, Print ISBN: 978-1-681140-87-2, EBook ISBN: 978-1-681140-88-9, LCCN: 2015904377. Bob Van Laerhoven: a fulltime Belgian/Flemish author, Laerhoven published more than 30 books in Holland and Belgium. Some of his literary work is also published in the US, Canada and France. Three-time finalist of the Hercule Poirot Prize for best mystery novel of the year with the novels 'Djinn,' 'Return to Hiroshima,' and 'The Finger of God.' Winner of the Hercule Poirot Prize for 'Baudelaire's Revenge,' which also won the USA Best Book Award 2014 in the category 'mystery/suspense.' Short stories in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Conclave, journal of character, the British literary magazine Wasafiri and in the compilation Brussels Noir in the renowned Noir-series of Akashic books. His last novel, 'De schaduw van de Mol' is currently being translated into English as 'The Shadow of the Mole.' 'Dangerous Obsessions': Tight, taut and shocking, these stories all have warped love as the source of violence. Belgian/Flemish author, Bob Van Laerhoven, winner of the USA Best Book Award 2014 in the category 'Mystery/Suspense' and the Hercule Poirot Prize with his controversial novel, 'Baudelaire's Revenge,' connects the fate of individuals with profound social changes. Van Laerhoven has been a travel writer in conflict-zones from 1990 until 2003 and echos of his experiences trickle through these confronting and thrilling tales, set in civil war-torn Algeria in the fifties, in a gypsy populated Polish concentration-camp during WWII, in a Peruvian border-town where stealing is a deadly art, in Liberia during the civil war in the nineties, and in Belgian Congo during the bloody uproar in the sixties. Omnia vincit amor-Love conquers all-the saying goes. But not our Dangerous Obsessions. Editorial Reviews of Van Laerhoven's novel, 'Baudelaire's Revenge' (Pegasus Books): 'A decadent tale... Commissioner Lefèvre's philosophical discussions with artists and poets and a creepy Belgian dwarf are fascinating...' -Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review, Sunday crime column 'Van Laerhoven vividly and astutely evokes a city under siege and keenly portrays the complex and controversial Baudelaire...' -Donna Seaman, Booklink '(An) intense historical crime thriller. The intricate plot, menacing atmosphere, and rich evocations of period Paris have undeniable power.' -Publishers Weekly 'Van Laerhoven packs much complexity into 256 pages, giving this historical mystery the heft of a far longer work... The flowers of evil, sketched in lurid botanical detail...' -Kirkus Reviews '...The novel also functions as a superb historical tale of an embattled city, as Napoleon III's France finds itself at war not only with Prussia but also with subversive elements in Paris itself... The flamboyantly lurid tone is hugely entertaining...' -Declan Burke, The Irish Times 'Mystery aficionados will love this pastiche of Wilkie Collins and Edgar Allan Poe...' -David Keymer, Library Journal 'This complex mystery from an award-winning Belgian author joins history and literary history to create a sly, smart revenge tale.' -Tom Lavoie, Shelf Awareness Pro 'Riveting, fascinating and 'very French' mystery... Van Laerhoven's prose is rich and perceptive, filled with philosophical and metaphysical speculations... This is a terrific mystery...' -Sam Coale, Providence Journal '...It is a journey worth taking to the heart of a strange, death-obsessed place where a dead poet still dwells in his writing...' -William Martin, Washington Independent Review of Books 'Beautifully written and deftly translated, Baudelaire's Revenge mixes the mystery of the crime novel with the sophistication of a philosophical treatise...' -Historical Novel Society Anaphora Literary Press has published over 120 creative and non-fiction books. Among these is the Pennsylvania Literary Journal, a tri-annual journal, available through EBSCO and ProQuest, which has published interviews with best-selling authors, such as Geraldine Brooks, Larry Niven, Cinda Williams Chima and Carrie Ryan, as well as the winners of the Sundance Film Festival.
